The most dangerous WiFi signal-catching you've ever done!

All you want to do is to watch your favorite movie tonight. Since you don't have internet at home, you need to download it on your phone first. Luckily, that van looks like it has a signal!

Oh wait, where does it go? The download is not finished yet! Chase the van until your favorite movie finished downloading, or die trying.

Controls

  • Up or W - Accelerate
  • Down or S - Brake/Reverse
  • Right or D - Turn Right
  • Left or A - Turn Left

Software used:

  • Godot - game engine
  • Krita - painting
  • LMMS - music
  • Explodomatica - for explosions
  • Chiptone - some sounds

LOL this is chaotic, I love it. The music really helps with the feeling of chaos, and so does the very nice touch of the changing sprite of the cars getting destroyed. I was not able to get the 100% download, because it was a bit too hard to evade everything. Overall well done!

Hey, this is a fun game! It's like a GTA 2 mission.

I've managed to complete it after a few tries, good work on difficulty as well!

Great job

damnn this is a really clean and solid entry! the music was simple but really effective and the controls feel really good (although it took a couple of attempts to get used to). and its a really creative take on the theme!

i lovee how health was implemented (though it took me a few tries to realise that the car fires a laser that damages me :p) but i like how it shows clearly when you take damage. maybe some sound effect when you get hit could be better?

overall a really fun game. well done!! :>

Cool game! I enjoyed playing it. The only thing i haven't liked is controls - they feels kinda twitchy to me

hhahaha! The concept is really funny!
But why shoot me just cause I'm using your wifi man? haha

Very exciting game with a good vibe and a clever backstory that relates to the theme. It was a little frustrating that the other cars could turn on a dime and I had to steer, but making them steer realistically would have been really hard.

I think compo purists would not allow sound effects taken from public libraries. Check the "derivative works" section for the Compo rules.

A really fun one - congrats - smooth and looks nice.

Took me some time to longer drive into other cars and not get shot, but now i finally can enjoy my movie!

Hah, loved the GTA 2 art style and damage graphics on cars. Fun concept. But why does the wifi van shoot at you?

@drtizzle Thank you! Chaos was indeed what I was going for. It is definitely a challenging game, I can't get 100% every time myself.

@caudatecoder Thank you, and congratulations for completing

@paperaeroplane555 Thanks, you're right about the sound effect on damage, it was even on my radar, but I didn't add it for some reason. I must've forgotten about it while rushing for the deadline . Congratulations for completing as well

@mogaiskii Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed. I do remember that the controls glitched out on rare occasions, but I've never got around to fixing it unfortunately. What exactly do you mean by "twitchy", does it not work properly?

@cabjhegas He's not the sharing kind of dude

@dob Thank you very much for the review. Yes, the traffic could definitely use some improvements, I was glad I got it to at least a half-working state. Maybe I'll improve on it in the future

I realize I'm in a somewhat gray area with the rules regarding the sound effects, yet I didn't want to opt-out completely since all other sounds and music were created by me. In the spirit of "ask forgiveness, not permission", I decided to clearly point out things which are not my original creations with the hope that it will be enough.

@butterfly Congrats, lucky you! :wink:

@chesiq The guy doesn't want to share his signal . I was going for a crazy over-the-top vibe, so that's the main reason. Thank you for playing!

Great!

I think the first thing I could say is that hearts should be on the road instead of being dropped by the truck we follow. It is really hard to get the hearts while playing. Also I think you should make the dezoom a little bit less aggressive since we stop and start the car pretty often x)

Othe than that the game is cool! It was fun and seeing all the crashes is quite fun ahah x) The physics of the car is a bit wacky, but it's totally fine for a game jam.

Great work!

I really dig the idea of this game. The music and art are nice and everything made sense very intuitively. I think that the difficulty is pretty high. Between the little collision (even when you go off-road doing 10% damage, to the short timer when you get out of range, it's really hard to recover from any mistake. Still, I found myself playing a longer than I thought I would. Nice!

Nice game! It was just quiet frustrating that the van can turn quicker then you, which throws you out the flow

The controls are mildly annoying, otherwise its a great game!

Nice entry! I enjoyed the game when I figured out how to play it more effectively. Initially I was just trying to drive too close to the van and was getting quite heavily punished for it. But when I started hanging back towards the edge of the radius the game became a fair bit easier to play overall. The art and music are very nice, and I found myself keeping wanting to go for another go when I failed close to 100% complete. One thing I found overly harsh was the cornering, with that the van turns to instantly face the new direction when you can’t, and that the corners are all sharp edges, meaning that messing up a corner even slightly causes a hit to your health. I think either having smoothed corners or having there being an off-road bit around each corner would make the game feel less harsh. Overall a nice different take on the theme.

@mathiouza Good idea with the hearts, I actually chose this way both because it was easier to implement and because the game would get harder. Apparently I tend to overshoot the difficulty a bit

I wondered about the dezoom as well, sorry if I gave you any headaches

You're right about the physics, I wish it was better. I always struggle with tuning physics, I guess I need to actually learn how to do that properly.

@nick-rafalski Yep, the difficulty is probably too high. I originally wanted to implement a few difficulty levels which would at least tweak a few variables, but that didn't make the cut, unfortunately.

@max-s True, smoother turns would definitely be nice.

@mchs-productions Can you please describe in more detail what "mildly annoying" means? Do they react poorly/glitch out/not feel good?

@player-2 Hanging out in the back was my main strategy as well, good find  I agree with the sharp corners, that's one of the first things on the radar to improve.

Thank you for the comments, everyone

Very original entry. It was quite tough, but I enjoyed it. Keeping up with the van was fairly easy, but the difficulty was in not losing health. The driving was surprisingly well made considering a jam game. Overall I am very happy I stumbled upon a driving game, good job!

I liked your idea and the game has very simple but dashing looks. Controls feel a little weird, but it didn't spoil the overall experience.

I know, I'll get really close to the van. That'll make things easier! Hang on a minute... is the van shooting at me? <You died> And suddenly the game gets more interesting!

Kids in the future won't understand the lengths we had to go to to get wifi.

Game needs more power slides.

I really enjoyed your game. I was a bit skeptical of the challenge of "follow the van" until I pulled in too close and suddenly they had a GUN. These people are defending their wifi with violence!

The idea of following close but not too close was quite interesting. I also really liked that the camera pulls back as you accelerate - it seems like such a little thing but it's a huge quality of life feature and just looks good too.

I didn't like that I couldn't drive on the sidewalks, I felt like sometimes you needed that extra bit of space to take some of the tighter corners. But in the end I got to download my favorite movie, and that's all that matters
