Fire Risk by Soul Grinder

[raw]
made by Soul Grinder for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

As a flame elemental you must reach the bottom of the level. All the ice platforms are unstable and will melt away as soon as you touch them because you are made of fire. Your health is also unstable and will deplete every second. Collect fire orbs to replenish your health so you will last longer.

You are awarded 100 points for each ice block you melt, 300 points for each gem you collect and 5000 points for reaching the bottom of the level as a completion bonus. The higher your score means the better your grade at the end.

The game was simple enough to immediately get into it and get playing, which is awesome. I really dig the graphics too. Cool submission!

Nice and straight-forward downward platformer, I was able to beat it on my first try (with a B- grade and a score of 39400). I really liked how easy it is to just jump in and play, and it was cool how the background and lighting progressed with the level. Good job!

You start getting a lot of speed near the end and I wasn't able to beat it. Missed too much health! But still had fun with it.

I had fun time playing it, didn't even need to look for the instructions. It had a nice mood and I really liked how background slowly changed and suddenly everything was dark. I was able to beast it with my second try.

Cool little concept I liked the idea that there was no turning back, for expanding on the game it could be cool to add in some big gems that are worth more points so you kinda gotta choose between oh do I go and break all those blocks are do I get the big gem that combined with the health bar could make for some interesting choices great job overall!

I enjoyed playing your game. Easy to understand and well implemented. Good it became more difficult and darker the deeper you get. I like the player sprite, especially the big on the title screen and when loosing all energy.

I was a little confused as how I was getting points.. Maybe it was distance down or ice block broken. But apart from me beung dumb, this was great!

I love how this game really subverts your expectations. When I started playing I immediately thought "Oh no the blocks are melting really fast and I don't want to fall!" But then I realized that you melt through platforms because you want to go down, and I thought that was really clever. The graphics give me a nice retro nostalgic feel, and I love how the game is challenging but very easy to pick up and play. Perfect length and I liked how the background changes over time. Excellent work!

This was pretty fun! My suggestion would be to space out the platforms farther from top to bottom or increase the player speed. It felt like I didn't have too much control on what to get, which is fine! But making it a little more lenient could help

Really nice game! I like the music and the graphics. Goes well together. Runs pretty smoothly. Maybe will be good to move camera a little lower to see what’s coming up. But otherwise, fun! Well done!

Really cool game, love the theme and the balance between falling fast to win and wanting to collect stuff for points. Also very satisfying to slide down the slide of a big stack of blocks and melt them all :) Getting points for melting platforms is an inspired choice. I only managed a B+ score after 3 attempts, haha.

That was really fun to play! I felt like I was constantly balancing risk and reward, then testing reaction times when it got faster. I got to the bottom on my second try, receiving a B-

Well done! The movement is satisfying and I had fun trying to find the best routes, preserving platforms to get gems and back! The camera could be a tiiiny bit lower, since most things above the player is not necessary for gameplay, and having more visibility could make strategizing easier!

The game even give scores, nice)
Grade B for the 2 attempt, I think I am good:)
This game requires you to get used to the fact that platforms melt because of you and you cannot stay on a platform indefinitely.
Graphics: hell is done cool! When I jumped into the lava I first thought I failed but then realized that this is the goal of this game :)
Graphics is good
Background music is good, it's active enough nut doesn't distract you
What else? Well done guys)

Simple playability and really fun. It gets me to play over and over so I could improve my grade. The music is very cool. That is an amazing job, considerind you did all by yourself!

329'000! :fire: :fire:

Very nice game! Thanks to the simple controls and game objectives it was immediately clear what needed to be done and what the difficulties were going to be.

I found the later game stages, where the level got darker and darker, a bit too difficult, maybe some sort of illumination around the fire orbs would have helped me

I feel like it could also be a cool adjustment to have the level scroll down slower with more "puzzly" ways to obtain the orbs, so that it gets less frantic and more of a puzzle game.

Nonetheless, very cool entry!

Nice entry! I would have liked the jump to be a little bit stronger, as you already have limited vertical control (and if I missed a jump I could plummet really far without landing anywhere). I really liked the blend of the gameplay, art and music as it brought back fond memories playing flash games as a kid

Nice entry. I enjoyed art style overally. Level design probably needs some more "puzzly" vibe because now it feels like it too easy and the only obstacle is the score at the end.
