LD49: Homeward by LMB

[raw]
made by LMB for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

Your spaceship completed its mission. Now it's the easy part: get back home.

Except... an asteroid shower hit your ship hard, causing it to become unstable. Will you get back to where you once belonged?

  • The goal is to reach Earth.
  • You cannot do anything while the ship is flying! There are random encounters along the way -- you interact during these encounters!
  • There's a plenty of typos!

Post-deadline changes:

  • Version 1.0.1, October 4th: Balanced the game. It was nearly impossible to beat, now it is merely "quite hard". (I think it would need substantial changes to make difficulty level reasonable.)

Quick personal note: I don't know if it's good, but I think this was my most fun Ludum Dare entry to make so far!

Nice little adventure game, enough events that I didn't see any repeats when I played a few times. It would be nice if there was actually an end goal though, otherwise well done

I like the concept, but the RNG makes for some really difficult playthroughs. If I start with a positive delta-reasoning I haven't yet found a way to do anything about it, and end up dieing from analysis paralysis (lol). Looking forward to the post-compo version!

Favourite typo: "fist officer". _Oh my_.

@recessive Thanks for the comment! I'd like to understand this point better:

> It would be nice if there was actually an end goal though

Well, the goal is to survive until you reach Earth. So maybe this goal was not clear enough? Or do you mean something deeper?

This was awesome! I'm amazed by how many events you crammed in 48 hours, complete with lots of unique art! The writing is great too. I also had problems dealing with high levels of Reasoning, but I appreciate that balance is difficult in 48 hours. Overall, this was super creative and fun :)

Great writing and I loved the Reason meter idea!

I really like the fun jokes in random events! My favorites were the one with the philosophers and the works of Russell <3

Despite the instructions, I instintively kept trying to do something while there was no ship on sight and the indicators were hitting alarming levels - and I felt a little frustrated when nothing happened, not even a dialogue. But this would be polishing, probably -- maybe in a post-combo version? ;)

Playing this was a fun experience, and I liked the humor.

A full screen option for the web-player would be nice.

This was an enjoyable experience! It was pretty fun to see all the different events, the writing had some good jokes! It took a while to get to the end, which came down to mostly luck and knowing what would happen in each choice from restarting so many times!

It is pretty neat how many events there are! Though the scribbles was a pretty near certain death if taken, and the fake earth was guaranteed death. The death text was funny to see the first time around! The clicking sound was a bit loud.

Overall, I did really enjoy seeing all the different places! Good work!

My kids and i loved this game. Super cool. Just... not able to win? Best we got was 3/4 of the way there. We often found no ways to counter-act the impressive changes that happened on random encounters. Most of of the time the best we could hope for was no change after an inciting event. The start seemed to have different stats too, we wanted the 0 change stat! xD

@commanderstitch Thanks for the comments, nice to know you enjoyed the game in family! The game is too hard, indeed (not intentional, I just didn't had the time to test and balance it properly). You need to be a bit lucky to beat it. (But the win screen is super lame, you didn't lose much :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

I really enjoyed this! I like how the choices affected your delta, not your amount, so they could have long term consequences if you make a bad choice early on. Very cool!

Cool game, i like that the dialog have lasting consequences to your ship, i just feel like the "reason" is a bit vague i couldn't guess what option to pick to raise or lower this value.

So close! Neat game. Music was nice and atmospheric, and didn't get annoying. I enjoyed some of the events quite a bit =).
