Running Keys by LDJam user 270783

[raw]
made by LDJam user 270783 for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

In Running Keys your ability to type quickly is put to the ultimate test. The floor is made of bricks that have a letter on them. To advance you have to press the key you are on. But don't take too long, because once the game starts (when the score appears) the floor will start to shake, and after a time it will fall, and if you don't type fast enough the letter on it, you will fall with it.

Feel free to post any bugs/issues/suggestions.

Thank you for playing and I hope you enjoy the game!

The game isn't the most screenshot-friendly game ever (I would never tell that to its face :D), but here are some images,

The most addicting game I've played so far! Very cool interpretation of the theme and good execution too  Got 1600 leters

@gus-the-shark Thank you very much for the kind words! I'm happy you liked the game.

1600 letters is quite a lot. You must be good at typing. I didn't reach 1600 letters, and I made the game :)

Quite fun! I wish it was more responsive to my inputs, sometimes I typed faster than the square could move, which was a bit frustrating. Didn't stop me from enjoying the game though! Nice job!

@joaosilva22 Thank you for playing! There is a list of improvements for this game, and I'll certainly add your observation to it as well :) I agree with you that making the character sort of roll through the level a bit more seamlessly could have added a bit more coolness to the experience. Thank you for the feedback!

I really like this game! Easy to understand and get stuck in. A simple idea well-executed, with a clever tutorial and title screen. As mentioned, it would be nice if the keys were a little more responsive, and I sometimes found that even spamming a key wasn't enough to get the square to hop to the next one. Also, if the rate at which the blocks fell increased as you played, that would be cool (not sure if this is already the case, but not that I noticed as I was playing through this). It would also be cool if words occasionally appeared in the string - this could be a cool typing trainer! Nice work.

Very addictive and well done! This is a very great game for people learning how to touch type. I would have liked to be able to move faster if I was able to type faster than the block moved, but that it just me. I think it would feel very satisfying if the block moved faster if you typed faster. Overall this was a great little game! Definitely tried to beat my high scores haha and got to around 1000.

A nice idea which matches the theme really well. I like how the start screen teaches you how the game works.

2 ideas: Would have loved to type faster. And maybe add real words to type? That way this game could be used as 10-finger-teach game!

Nonetheless, cool concept. Kudos!

Simple idea but great execution. Good job! :)

That sound effect + animation makes it pretty satisfying to get keys right

Nice game :) As others have said, I do wish the game was a little more responsive, but fun entry nonetheless!!

Nice and simple idea, suits the theme well. Would have liked some faster response rate on the input

@micheldever Thank you for playing my game and for the feedback! I'll have to work a bit more on the responsiveness (though I did make some progress on this), and I believe I managed to fix the bug you mentioned, where spamming the key wouldn't get you to the next square.

I like your idea of making the blocks fall more quickly the more you play. I'll implement that in a potential Running Keys 2. I think that more variety would help the game a lot, and this is a very good idea for that. And it would be cool to make words appear in a string, I agree. Will think about ways to implement that.

@karsinis This is a very good idea as well, to make the block move faster if you typed faster. It would make the player feel more in control. Just fixed some lag issues the game had, and I think I have an idea on how to implement this. I realize that it can get a bit frustrating to press something and the game not reacting accordingly. Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

@zubspace I'm happy to hear that the main menu screen tutorial is working. Making tutorials is not my strong suit, and I was afraid that what I implemented is not enough.

I agree with you and I will have to find a way to make the game let you type faster. Adding some real words is a good idea, as it can add some variety. Thank you for the feedback and for playing my game!

@lucdeligne Thank you for playing and for the feedback :) Glad to hear that you liked the animation and the sound effect. At one point I removed the cube spinning in the air, and I thought that some coolness was lost in the process. I'm happy to hear that you think I made the right choice in keeping the animation :D

@valentines Thank you for the feedback and for playing! Will work on the responsiveness more. I fixed some issues and made the gameplay a bit more responsive, but more work is needed. I can't update the game at the moment, but I'll probably make a sequel or something at some point :)

@tobb Thank you for the feedback and for playing! I think I managed to fix the responsiveness a bit (and eliminated some nasty lag issues that I found), and I think I'll release a 1.5 version or something similar in the future :)

I marked you down initially for Audio until I read the comments mentioning it. Then I realised I had turn my sound down by accident. Lack of sound really makes the game harder for some reason. My only gripe is that it was occasionally unresponsive to keypresses, resulting in my untimely demise. Oh, and my typing sucks.

Nice game! I wish there wasn't a cooldown and maybe a wpm meter, real words to type could be really neat. This game has a ton of potential, good luck!

Pretty fun typing game! My only gripe that people above me probably already mentioned is that the game won't let me type faster. Otherwise, good job!

That was fun! The concept was great, and was pretty well executed, it just felt a bit unresponsive at times, but nothing important. Art was simple, yet effective, and the sounds fit well, although some music would have been nice. So, overall, a pretty neat and fun game, congratulations!

@malcolm To be fair, the game doesn't have a lot of audio, so I can understand a lower score there :) Some music would definitely be nice. Probably sound helps because it's sort of a sign that you can press a button. That was my intention. And speaking of responsiveness, I fixed (hopefully) this issue and the game plays more smoothly. I will try and release a sequel in the future, after the jam ends :) And your typing probably doesn't suck as much as you think, because the game sometimes doesn't register the commands properly (I fixed that though). Ha, if you play the sequel probably it will improve :D Thank you for playing and for the feedback!

@robbietaco Thank you for playing and for the feedback! Based on the feedback received, I improved (hopefully) the overall movement. I plan to release a new version in the future. Hopefully you play the new one as well and enjoy that version too :)

@moddingmachine I removed the cooldown and made the game more responsive :) As for adding words, it's something that I might add in the future (I am currently working on a new version, with some much needed improvements). Thank you for the words of encouragement and for playing!

@essarrgee The cooldown timers are removed and the game is more responsive, and I think it feels better to play and is more fun. I'll release a new version in the future with these changes. Thank you for the feedback and for playing!

@theinkskeleton Thank you for playing and for the feedback! I couldn't really tell when I first made the game that it was so unresponsive, but now I can see that it is something that had to be fixed. Fortunately, I managed to find what I had to change and now it feels better to play :) I'm glad you liked the art, I know it's something that has to be improved :D And yes, I agree that some music would be great. Maybe in a sequel.

The tutorial and menu were pretty cool, but I wasn't a fan of the main game play. From the coolness of the tutorial, I was expecting a typing-based platformer
🎤 LDJam user 270783

@rubenwardy Typing-based platformer does sound like a cool idea, though! I'll have to think about how that would work :) The game was envisioned as a different take on the infinite runner genre, but a platformer using this framework would indeed be interesting. Thank you for the feedback (and for praising the tutorial/menu) and for playing! Also, I'm working on a sort of sequel, which has improved controls. Hope you give that a try and hopefully you enjoy that version more (this version doesn't have the most responsive controls, which probably had an effect on your enjoyment).

cool game. sometimes nothing happens when i press the correct key probably because the response isnt very fast but other than that i like what you made
🎤 LDJam user 270783
14. Oct 2021 · 09:15 UTC
@rengo Yes, sorry about that. It's a bug, that's why sometimes nothing happens when you press a button (if you press the A button it will work) :) I made a pretty big mistake in my logic, but I found it and changed my ways :D Thank you for playing and for the feedback!

PS: I'm making a 1.5 version with lots of bug fixes and better responsiveness. Hope you play that and enjoy it more when I release it.

I wish the keys were more responsive (e.g. being able to buffer or queue keys up). I think I could have literally gone on forever if I wanted. It feels like the speed the keys fall at is determined by whether or not I'm pressing keys, but as long as I'm pressing (even slowly) I don't think I could have died.

Or, a challenge :D Thank you for playing and for your feedback! Hope you check out and enjoy the new version as well (very likely to be released on my itch.io page).
