Fronk Frizby - Qoffee Cuest by LiquidFunk

[raw]
made by LiquidFunk for Ludum Dare 50 (EXTRA)

:coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

You asked, we delivered -- The ever so popular Fronk Frizby is finally starring in his own game. Wow!

Drink, swig and glug your way through a whimsical turn-based RPG. Battle unsettling enemies, encounter familiar faces and confront the most sinister foe of all: your addiction to caffeine.

This was originally intended as a regular jam entry, but it proved difficult to finish during that time frame, which is why we opted for the "Extra" category. In total, we spent around 4 days making this... whatever this is.

For hosting a WebGL game on itch.io, you must ensure it's a .zip file with the index.html in the root directory. Also make sure you tick the box on your game page that says "this game will be played in the browser" so itch displays the game.

Seems like the HTML5 file is not working in my browser. I am using Windows 7 and Chrome. Please let me know if you can get the HTML5 file up and running so I can try this. It looks very interesting.

@lvl99chicken @sammot @vixenmink Hi all, we've gone for the Extra category instead of Jam. We needed more time to actually finish the game. Please try it now, and let us know what you think of it!

Well, I didn't get very far, but you have a nice main character to build further on.

I started off thinking this must be a joke but then your funny narrative made the thing.

This was a nice hidden gem. Didn't fully understand if there was more depth to the combat aside from just attacking, but the dialogue and visuals were really fun.

@quite-good Thanks for playing! Unfortunately the combat is extremely shallow. We didn't really have the time to implement anything more interesting, we focused on writing some, uh, "interesting" dialogue instead.

@liquidfunk I don't think the combat being shallow is a bad thing. I appreciate it. I think jrpg combat is shallow by nature, and games tend to just throw more options at it to make it seem less so, but ultimately its just a gate where you either have the numbers to bypass it or not. If you lose you reload the save and grind or hope for better RNG. Since your game focuses more on comedy, the combat feels more a parody of those mechanics. I also found it interesting that I wasn't sure if I could lose or not. I really liked the varied descriptions of the attacks as well, very creative and funny!

TL/DR I like the combat feeling like a parody and think you should lean into it even more!

Had a great time playing this game, got to the end! Really reminded me of undertale which I really enjoyed. Characters and dialogue are over the top and hilarious, really love the graphic style and music as well. I thought it was a good length and was really impressed by all the dialogue you were able to fit in which kept the encounters fresh. Great submission! Funny that both of our games featured satisfying your caffeine addiction.

I love that you went for the feel of Undertale but gave it a bit of a twist to introduce more humour. I'm not really into coffee culture so a lot of this just went over my head, but as somebody who thinks coffee is gross the jokes still seem like they're properly satirical. Sorry you couldn't finish it in the time period you wanted, though - you should still be proud!

@otterfaelure Heh, it's funny that you say that. I'm in the same camp, I can't stand the stuff 😂. Actually, Fronk started (in Milburt) as an extreme parody of the stereotypical office worker who is overly obsessed with coffee and talking about coffee (I'm just the same with tea btw so no shade against coffee lovers 😂). He turned out to be popular and people said they could relate to him so we wanted to try giving him his own story!

I was actually struggling a bit when writing him because I don't know the first thing about coffee and don't have many coffe-related terms in my vocabulary. Luckily, @liquidfunk who actually drinks coffee came in and saved me by writing all of the funny coffee dialogue in the last boss battle.

That was a weird trip :D ...good music and overall presentation. The style was consistent from beginning to the end. Humor was crazy

I first thought there would be some gameplay choices, but then it seemed the other actions than 'strike' changed nothing, making the game feel like a long interactive joke. Good thing it wasn't a bad joke :D

Gotta love the funny narrative, but it's not always clear who's talking
What a trip though, wow, felt like another world

Really fun entry! I loved the great prose and the uniqueness of each enemy. From my understanding, additional dialogue options only bring more lore insights to the fights, which was a neat surprise, considering you would not risk dying while exploring the available options. The personality of the foes as well as the soundtrack blended really well to create a unique atmosphere, great job!

Strengths:
- Great, imaginative encounters
- Fantastic soundtrack
- I love the fact that each enemy has its own environment. You might have lacked time to make transitions, but I felt like this created a great eerie, almost psychotic vibe to the succession of fight.

Possible improvements:
- After several jams using pixel fonts, I have switched to high-res UI on top of pixel art and am happy with the result. I think doing the same with your game might improve the readability.

Sorry we had to speed through the end, but I'm glad we were able to finish it! Y'all are very clever with your writing, it's not often an LD game makes me laugh out loud with dialogue alone.

Holy crap the music was great! The writing was funny and sharp, and the little gameplay that was there felt very polished. I've never played undertale, but this somehow reminded me of undertale.

Good job creating such a unique experience in 4 days
