Pachinko is Life by Don Fouts

[raw]
made by Don Fouts for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

The Pachinko Royale transpacific cruise liner departed San Francisco for Tokyo late in the season. In the second month of the charter a raging tempest blotted out all light except that of the lightening. The crew begged everyone to evacuate, but the guests chose to go down with their favorite pachinko machine.

James, Hawaiian shirt over Steeler's jersey clad America; Kenjii, a geriatric Japanese matriarch; Honza, a mysterious tracksuited tweeker from eastern Europe; and you, the player were fighting over their favorite machine when the storm struck. Together they lifted Lost at Sea, as much food as they could scoop from the buffet, and as many Pachinko as they could carry into a life raft.

As one of four survivors left adrift at sea with no hope of rescue you must make decisions to delay the inevitable slide into cannibalism, death, and worst of all, the loss of pachinko. Will you rise to the occasion to secure more supplies? Will you encourage your hapless comrades to take on the risk? Or will you play it safe, do nothing, and let the balls fall?

A game about the comic-absurd chaos of life before death.

During our last 3 hours we pulled some lever or pushed some button that suddenly bugged everything out. There are probably a bunch of bugs in this as we had to hastily deploy at the last minute. Sorry in advance for anything wild and crazy.

I was not expecting anything like this, I was hooked as the game went on - I love pachinko but this was a really good add on top of it. Great ending.

Cool game! At first I was confused because of the Pachinko machine and the different numbers, but as the first crew member died I got it. Really creative idea!

Didn't expect a Pachinko/Narrative cross over could be so engaging! Your team knocked it out of the park with this one. There was one scenario that was particularly kind of sick, that had me laughing at the result of it gaining you more food (the blood shark one). The music never got old, and I loved the design on the pachinko machine. Im undecided about how well it acheives the theme, but then again I personally found this theme difficult so I still rated you well for it. Wonderful job, this was a delight.

!> I thought I was going into a simple pachinko minigame but the progression really caught me off guard!

Great game all around, I really like the "make your choice" voice line in the dialogue music :D

Well, that certainly wasn't a game concept I thought I'd ever play-however, I'm currently glad I did. The game initially had me not that much on board, as it felt like the humor elements were trying too hard, at least for me. However, once things got serious, and the tone shifted, my attention was completely drawn in. The graphics on the pachinko machine were very nicely done, as well as the UI work. I especially loved how the pachinko changed depending on story elements. It does feel like the backgrounds could've used a little bit more love, however. The audio works well enough for the mood, but doesn't stand out as anything extremely strong. The gameplay loop was pretty good, overall, with the narrative decisions causing the stakes in the pachinko part of the game. Overall, nice work on a very unique entry!

I got toward the end but encountered a bug where the pachinko stopped firing and couldn't finish :(
It was a fun game though. I got way more invested than I expected to.

Haha... I was able to delay my death for 3 days :) Love a good pinball game! Very nice moody graphics and music. Could use some sound effects from the ball and the machine. Also player interaction is quite limited but I think that is part of the pachinko idea. I felt a bit overwhelmed by the story Q&A parts, I found it was too much text unfortunately.

Overall I enjoyed your little game!

Thanks for the entry.

Did not hear any sound effects, downloaded the V2 game.

I love the concept on this one! It was a bit laggy for me, but I think it's coming from my side.

So surreal, strange. So much effort put into the text, graphics and polishing. I am impressed.
I did not really understand why everytime each of the four gets an initial amount of balls in the basked and what happens to the one with most and the end ... But I enjoyed shooting balls into the machine. ... and such a surreal scenario, very! Cool!

The humor is fantastic! I love all the goofy decisions I needed to make. I don't know why the pachinko score was changing between rounds so dramatically. Some rounds I would end way in the lead, and begin the next round far behind. Anyway, the humor was great, the ending was fantastic, and I loved the pachinko. Great game.

Muito bom! De inicio eu não estava esperando muita coisa, mas me surpreende positivamente. Você se conecta com os personagens muito facilmente, oque da um toque interessante para o jogo. Segue a tematica perfeitamente e é bem polido no geral. Meu conselho seria Diminuir um pouco os textos e acrescentar mais pixelarts, mesmo que sejam simples. Ficar lendo por muito tempo de certa forma tira um pouco a imersão do jogo. Bom trabalho!

Wow, that was wild! I hoped into the game without reading the description, it took me off-guard. There are some issues with the full-screen in the web version, I ended up with the post-it outside of the frame. Also I unfortunately couldn't finish the game: during the last round, one ball got stuck (typical pachinko one might say). Guess I win and get to live forever! :p

Besides those technical issues, that was really fun! There's a good variety of situations in the story sequences, and it's cool that they are selected randomly. The progression of the game is delightfully surrealist, and the visuals and sounds contribute greatly to the mood of the game. And linking pachinko score to characters and their fate give a nice spicy twist to those mechanics.

It was a nice surprise!

Wow what an experience that was! I love the whacky yet grim take on the theme. Unfortunately the game got stuck twice for me and the choices were cut off in fullscreen. But the humor and idea more than made up for it. Awesome entry!

What an absurd game, I love it!

The ending seemed very abrupt - was it supposed to be? I was just minding my own business playing pachinko when the game declared I had delayed 7 days. I guess I was expecting one last event, or a message saying that I was selected to be sacrificed or something.

Almost skipped this one, but I'm glad I didn't. This game is really cool - I love the absurd plot/concept, great art/sound, and the gameplay.

Unfortunately, bugs kept me from being able to finish. The first bug was that after the first transition event all the "sticky notes" with the decisions were below the play area. I could _just_ click the top of one, so I cold continue, but not make any actual choice.

The second bug hit when it was down to just me and Honza. The Machine just stopped launching balls even though there were 3 left. The handle would crank, but no balls :-(

So, sadly it was a soft lock. WebGL version btw. Still, very cool game - just needs debugging!

Whoa, I wasn't expecting this to be so fun  Funny jokes and writing, easy to start playing (even for beginners to pachinko) and the soundtrack was a perfect fit. Great entry!

I had the same issue where the post-it notes showed up in weird places, also on the WebGL build. Didn't stop me from playing but it make it difficult to know what I was choosing.

I would never have expected this combination to work, but it totally does. Really interesting take!

I played html5 version but was not able to complete the game due to some bugs %( Pachinko machine just stopped reacting at some point (I guess that happened when I launch the second ball while the first one is still bouncing, but i'm not sure). Still I was able to lose one of my crew members and really enjoyed the narrative. Dayly events are brilliantly written :) And that relaxing music along with blood-soiled pachinko machine is really hitting the spot ;) Awesome entry folks!
