Wipeout by TheMoonrise

[raw]
made by TheMoonrise for Ludum Dare 50 (JAM)

For this jam we kept it light and simple.

Go coco-nuts on your board

In Wipeout your goal is to score as many style points as possible before the wave inevitably catches up to you. Performing awesome stunts scores you points and allows you to keep your speed to delay your wipeout.

trick 02b.gif

How to play?

Make sure to keep your balance using the left and right arrow keys. With perfect balance you build up your score multiplier. Ride to the upper edge of the wave to jump using the up and down arrow keys. While in the air press the shown keys in the correct order to perform stunts.

So I really, and I mean REALLY, sucked at this

That aside, you have good mechanics here. It looks good and sounds good. I'm sure with enough practice I'd be able to score some actual points but I stink at this sort of game.

Nice entry

This was such a fun game! The mechanics work so well together and it's just a really great game idea.
It looks amazing too!

Awesome idea. Kind of wish it had a faster restart other than that had a lot of fun.

High score of 23,406. I think I could maybe triple that. I am going to keep practicing.

This game rules, dude. I LOVE the typing mechanic.

I think maybe the balance mechanic should be a bit more lenient, and that failing a trick should END your run.

The player essentially gets to choose the scale of their reward by waiting for the multiplier to increase before popping a trick. Since the only risk that exists right now is failing the trick, the risk reward doesn't balance out enough IMO.

So far, I think maybe this is the best game I've played in the jam.

I can agree with the other. This game is fun. The art is cool, the gameplay is solid. Playing it feels really nice.

The game is neat and well-done, it reminds me a lot of the old yetisports flash games for some reason (wasn't there one on a surfboard? I can't remember). Perfect for short sessions when the mood strikes.
I think an uncapped multiplier, that persists between tricks and decreases or resets outright when losing balance, would do a lot to drown my brain with dopamine and increase tension.

34205 Style points! :) this is really a nice entry! Maybe it would be cool to make the correct key presses in a combo progress a single animation

Nice :) Relaxing and stressful at the same time  At the begining the controls felt a bit laggy, but after few tries I got used to them and was able to play for longer time :surfer:

Cool idea! Aparently i'm not as good at using a keyboard as I thought haha, need more practice!

Nice aesthetics and mood, love the trick success messages! Good work!

it took a while to get the hang of this, but one i got the balancing worked out i loved it! This could be a great mobile game too, utilizing the G sensor maybe. idk. But i gave this one a nice rating!

Great game with some very fun gameplay. It's clear everyone did their job well, since the graphics, audio, etc. were all impeccably polished for something made in a weekend! However, I felt personally that the connection to the theme is quite loose, given that you can't really "delay" the wave so much as make as many points before it hits. With a bit of tweaking (like perhaps more styling = faster surfing) it can be a really good game. Great job!

I got 59295! I liked your entry a lot! Everything from the graphics to the "feel" to the sounds really tie the game together. A suggestion for the future would maybe be that you could get penalties for typing the wrong letter when you're doing your combo! Overall a great game :)

I sucked at first falling in the water shortly after the game starts, but then it got better and I understood how much fun this is :D Tried to improve my score a few times. Awesome mechanics, great game! :-) Would love it if you could do "freestyle" tricks - if you plan on taking this further after the Jam I'd love to play many more times!

Wow! This is a BLAST. Seriously, you've prioritized all the right things here, namely: the controls! I love how the pressure ramps up, and it feels genuinely challenging in all the right ways. Great job, you should be proud of this. It's also a unique concept, and it fits the theme great. My high score so far: 48,755. I've gotta keep playing though...

I had a lot of fun with this! It reminds me of the surfing minigame from club penguin but with some more weighty gravity. I like the feel of the physics a lot and the whole game has a really great sense of style to it. I feel like you could probably port this over to mobile pretty seamlessly to!

Thank you so much for your nice comments and the positive feedback! We got the 20 ratings! :)

@anhievus that sweet, sweet dopamine :D

@magus77 that's an interesting idea with the G-sensor...

@arihan10 Good thing pointing this out! I'm not 100% sure here because @themoonrise implemented the logic but the wave should reach you faster, the more tricks you fail. You are totally correct, that there is a lot of tweaking potential in general. :D

@korfi Impressive! (I didn't get past 30k... xD)

I enjoyed the music in this a lot, I'm not great at typing minigames so I was not able to score huge but this is a really neat game and fits the theme well!

This was fun to play! I think there's a good balance here with the controls and how to get more points. My only complaint is the overlap between the multiplier and the score when you jump, but that's a minor thing since it goes up so fast.

Awesome game!

I was an absolute fan of YouRiding at the time so this throws me back! I liked the controls, it's really difficult to balance on the wave at first but once you get it it feels good! Art is also nice and readable with cool music.

Thanks for the game and great job!

had a lot of fun playing it. to me it is the best ever balancing game i played. very intuitive and very very well balanced i love how you do not punish for missclicks and such! only thing would be if we could keep our multiplier in some way after a succesfull stunt i believe would make the game flow a lot smoother. currently the fact that we have to build our multiplier again and again kindof breaks the game into too frequent segments.
