Garden War by Firesplash Entertainment

Remember last time you have seen one of those cute dragons from rescaria? It must be about 6 months ago... This time, at anniversary-anniversary edition Ludum Dare 50 (and our 10th LD in total) Kurisou has well deserved some rest. Unfortunately he has been booked for a garden party - at least he thought!
"Story"
In Garden War, you play a manager who is running an event for advertising purpose. You distributed leaflets to invite people to your "Hot Dog Party" but secretly you wanted people to see your new advertisements so you are trying to keep them away from the hot dog grill as long as you can (In the end you did only buy 50 sausages)
How to play
Build fences and artillery to defend your sausages. * Use Bear traps to slow down people, * use spikes to deal damage to people walking over them. * If people walk through advert flags, you earn money. Time is frozen in build mode, but buildings are actually built by drones at runtime. The order of placement matters, because one drone can only build one building at a time.
In the end, you have to delay the inevitable end of sausage supply by "decimating" guests.
How to build
In build mode, you can select the building you want to place on the left side. Now you can use your mouse to place that on the yard wherever you like. The actual build time starts as soon as you exit the build mode but only if there is a drone availabe. Drones can only build one building at a time, that means they will build those in the order you placed them in. It does for example not make sense to first place all fences, then fill the space with spikes. Instead, place a few fences, then spikes, then fences, ... The order can make the difference between win and lose.
If you decide to cancel a build, use the Job List on the right side - You get 80% gold back then. If you decide to replace a building at a later time, open the build mode and click the building on the map without selecting a new building in advance. You can get up to 65% gold back - depending on the health of the building. Buildings can be destroyed by visitors. This is more likely to happen, if you are placing fences too near so that the gangways gets too small. If you happen to trap people, the panic - which will cause then to randomly attack your buildings directly. (You don't want that)
Controls
Mouse. End. Select/Interact with LMB, Rotate objects with scroll wheel or RMB. Quite intuitive.
No virtual people have been hurt by catapults by the way, they are shooting ice cream :) - Seriously!

Very impressive for a jam game!
Thanky you all for your feedback!
from a mechanism perspective you have put a lot in considering the time frame of the game jam.
I recognize I probably should've used more spikes as opposed to setting up a money making compound turn one though, haha
great entry :)
But yes, such games often are hard to balance in that short time especially if there are not much testers.
I found that ALL streamers I watches playing this game tried to but spikes and fences somewhere else than waht I thought is the most logical spot (near the sapwn) so maybe a tutorial would have helped, too :D
This said, minds are different! As developer you always got a specific view on things and that leads to missing possible culprits like that
Thanks for the feedback!
The balance between the costs and items is good and the information about the refund is very helpful. Only thing I missed is a description of the items - e. g. the beartrap.
Very good work!
It's at first a bit hard to understand where to put obstacles and traps, but when you understand that the best way is to begin by enclosing your hot dog cute dragon then building a looong way with spikes to it, you can make a pretty decent score :p
I wish I could zoom and/or pan the camera. And I couldn't find a way to go from building a thing to recycling without going in and out of the building mode...
Thanks for this cool game, I liked it !

Yes, the camera movement is a feature that has been requested several times now. And yes, we wanted to add a "recycle" button but I forgot it in the final crunch

Seems a pretty simple and minimalistic strategy  I only used wooden fences and catapults for defense, and I had to try and position them in a "clever" way to stack as many people as I could near the catapults and wreck them all together.
Then I just started stashing money because even the wooden fences wouldn't get destroyed seeing as everyone was just dying so fast.
Good job on this entry! I've played a lot!

@conradoclark nice one! I love seeing uncommon ideas like yours coming up! We always had only the usual "lane building" in mind but really cool approach!
(At least in theory) it is actually inevitable that at some points guests will come through and eat all the hotdogs.
The game has 14 waves, and after tha last wave it starts over at wave 6 but with increasing "guest stats" (damage, health and speed) so at some point the guests will be incredibly fast and/or onehit all the buildings while not taking any noticeable damage from even the catapults :D

Good luck on your ratings, see you next LD! :D

However once I got into the game, the build mode vs not build mode is really cool and I loved watching the things being built. It was a bit hard to see but overall it was really fun!
Nice job!
And yeah, I've found that the quitting buttons on html5 does just crash the game without actually closing it. I did the same. I don't know if there is a way around this if you want it both html5 and app. Love rts', love kingdom management and all. so fun!
