Long Shot by F1Krazy
You are testing an experimental space fighter. Its weapon is powerful, but prone to overheating. You can only fire it once every 10 seconds.

Long Shot is an endless bullet hell game created in 72 hours. Survive for as long as you can against an onslaught of randomized enemy waves, dodging bullets and shooting back when you can, and aim for the high score.
Features: - A massive variety of enemy waves with randomized positions - A list of your top 10 high scores - Some hidden throwbacks to my very first Ludum Dare entry
Controls: - Arrows: Move - Z: Select/Fire - X: Cancel
Changelog: - 10/10/2022: Fix severe memory leak that caused the game to lag if you survived for long enough - 08/10/2022: One new enemy type, a number of new wave types, and several difficulty adjustments

@shimmerscale I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Well done !
However art style is beautiful
The graphics are cute and the music is basic, but very catchy ^^
Great game overall!
For some reason the game got a bit slower as I was playing -- both the movement and the audio slowed down, to the point where it was a bit _too_ easy to play. Not sure why -- FWIW I was running it on itch.io and I'm using Firefox.
Overall great work!
@fifut That's something I'm considering for a future update, but it would need a lot of work and balancing to get it right.
@wouter52 I originally had the gun fire automatically as well, but I changed it for example the reasons you mentioned: to add an extra element of strategy.
@leekanarchism Thanks for the heads-up. I have a sneaking suspicion that enemies and bullets aren't being deleted when they move off-screen, which would gradually cause the game to lag. I'll investigate, and if that is indeed the case, I'll fix it.
I'm plowing through my backlog and I'll get round to all your games shortly! Thanks for your reviews!
However I found it quite difficult to grasp where the hitbox of the ship was... It took me quite a while to realize that only the cockpit could be hit by bullets.
I also found the control super unintuitive. Why the heck **Z** ?? I was stuck in the menu without being able to read the tutorial until I learned about the command. It would have been super useful if the continue/fire button was mapped to multiple common commands, so people don't fumble around and use the one they prefer. For example, you could have mapped it to E, space, enter, left click, etc...
While the core idea with the 10s is good, Idid find it quite boring however. Would have been lovely to add something to do in-between the 10s timer, like dodging or shooting less effective bullets.
Oh one more thing, I looved your intro before the menu !! Really well made !
The simplicity of the graphics fit well into everything, the music was also a good match for it. The idea for the 10 seconds is neat, but didn't really need to be used if you're just dodging for most of it. Just nice to see someone else who made a bullet hell game for the jam. Well done!
Had a lot of fun with this one! I tended to save my shots for the bosses since they were worth so many points. Occasionally I used one for the full-width waves if I didn't see a way through.
I would have liked to see more a difficulty curve, I felt like a lot of my deaths at the end were just from simple mistakes rather than misreading a situation or failing to navigate some tight bullets.
I with there was a "smarter" way to use that 10 second shot. To make it matter. Now I just waited until the meter filled and gave it my best shot. I think this mechanic could work better on a constant set of enemies (space invader style) or against a boss that you need to kill, rather than waves of passing enemies.
Thanks for the experience!
Great entry!

I do really like the retro vibes though, and that you made it in TIC-80. Good job!
