This is Dread Shadows, our JAM Submission we made for the Ludum Dare 51 challenge with the theme "Every 10 Seconds".

Game Description

You are an explorer searching for the treasure room containing one of the legendary Crystal Skulls. Apparently the tomb you entered is cursed, lights go out every 10 seconds!

Use the time you have while you can see wisely, because you need your spatial awareness when it's dark. The tomb contains all sorts of dangers you don't want to run into! And while its dark, it's advised to keep moving around or else the mist of spirits will grow denser.

How to play

You can play the game at Itch.io in the browser, or download the stand alone client. The WebPlayer can be a little bit laggy or wonky. Use the download for the best experience. Use the link to itchio for the webversion, as it didn't fit in the LDjam embed.

with kind regards, Magus and Falien!

Was really spooky not knowing what could be around in the dark where the music worked well and I thought the lighting was done really well, as you could still see somewhat in the dark but not too much so it was just the right amount. The first time the monster growled scared the crap out of me too so nice job!

A nice little game of exploration, and has a spooky feel. I wasn't sure what the negative was for standing still in the dark, I did it a few times and never really noticed any spirits.

The mouse sensitivity was a bit too high for me, and moving faster diagonally got me killed a few times on narrow platforms

Fun little exploration game. Took a moment to realize what was happening, and even found the flashlight after getting all the switches.

Really spooky and haunting sound effects. When in the dark I usually just stopped moving if I wasnt sure what was ahead. Nice game.

Super moody game. Love the feel of it. Sometimes difficult to see, but I guess that's the point. Nice game!

Made it in 13 deaths, yeah that was cool, like the use of the theme. I was always thinking a monster would come and kill me anytime...spooky. I thought the background music was the only part I didn't like didnt fit the mood or the sound effects which were good.

Fun idea! It was definitely spooky. It was so dark that I had a really hard time seeing even when the lights were on, though.

Thank you all for the comments and remarks so far.

These jams are a learning experience for me personally and i always take a lot from the comments in how i approach the next one, so thanks you all again :)

i hope Dread Shadows will be played a bit more in the next days to come, so we can make it to the 20 votes minimum.

We'll be playing and rating your games too of course along others we find on the site :)

I liked the ambiance of your game quite a lot !
It was well made for a jam game !

The game idea is good, however you forgot to disable world ambiant lighting so it was really easy to navigate even when the light was out.
The music was good and moody. However soundstep with echo could really reinforce the mood and the feeling of being trapped below earth...

I loved the various props you put here and there, really add up to the ambiance !

Really liked the take on the theme and the fact that there were bits of lighting around so that I could still navigate myself around in the darkness. Good landmark placements as well so I never felt truly lost cus I'd stumble across a part I recognised and could go from there.

hey, the map design was good making me feel lost in such a small area. i think there's a problem with the mouse, you 're supposed to look where the cursor is, something feels off about that. Nice mood and atmospehere.

Thanks for the tips and ideas :) and i think @falien can be happy too, she was making the map layout and pushed to include enough landmarks to make hallways recognisable
