Sheepwolves by Fiordarancio

[raw]
made by Fiordarancio for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Dog the shepherd dog is a dog, clearly, being crushed under the boots of capitalism. Each day it's expected to deliver a certain number of sheeps to its owner's barn. The requests lately have lost all touch with reality though, the number of sheeps expected are greater than the ones available to our hero. Fortunately a nearby nuclear fallout will make these demands attainable once more. Careful though, there might be wolves in sheep's clothing amidst Dog's ranks.

Every 10 seconds a rain of nuclear fallout will force the sheeps to make a hard choice: duplicate and make our hero's life easier or turn into a wolf and feast on its previous brothers and sisters. Dog's objective is to take it's starting flock and allow it to proliferate and reach the desired amount of sheeps before bringing them to the barn to end the day of work while simultaneously keeping the wolves at bay. The only tool available to accomplish all of this is Dog's mighty bark. Barking at a sheep will kindly invite it to go towards the direction that Dog is pointing towards. This power can also be used also to save a sheep that is about to get eaten by a wolf and push it away from the predator.

Commands:

  • WASD to move Dog around the field
  • Left-click or B to bark
  • Mouse pointer to focus the bark in the direction of the sheep

The game is also on itch.io!

You can play the game at https://fiordarancio.itch.io/sheepwolves-ludum-dare-51

Please be aware that we made some post-jam fixes and refinements on that version :)

I like this :), the art is simple but effective and the music track is great. I wish my (the dogs) hitbox was a little bigger or squarer or something cause the sheep easily slip off of me. Also at least on the embedded version my bark didn't seem to do anything. And it's more challenging than I expected!

What a fun and wonky game haha. Lovely humor, solid execution of the simple visual style. It's effective and I especially loved the backstory.

Cute little game, found it a bit hard to tell what the ai was up to and it got stuck in the corner one time but I did enjoy it!

I loved the simple art style, and the mechanic is probably the most unique I have seen so far this Jam.
I did struggle with trying to guide the sheep and kept getting overwhelmed by wolves though.

Cure and simple. It's bummer that it's so hard to get sheep away from the edges of the screen though, and it's not really clear what the intended counter-play to wolves is.

@wazce @httpsterio @upcharlie @codeman1010 @sven-schoeling thank you for all these useful feedbacks! We really had no time to balance things, so I'm glad the overall experience is still nice. I hope more playtest will help us next time.
The actual effect of the bark should be pushing sheeps a little away and break the chain between wolf's bite and a sheep. We initially thought of giving Dog a direct counter-attack against the wolves, but it seemed to make the game too easy. I agree hitboxes can be refined, and the edges too xD

Funny description and unique concept. Kinda janky, but most of the bugs I noticed seem to be fixed in the updated version.

Cute and funny, although sometimes quite difficult to manage, the sheep got stuck in the corners of the screen quite often. Also I think there is a bug with the lose condition, as it seemed to just happen randomly

The Good
- Cute graphics
- Good idea
- Fun in the game :)
- Simple concept

The Ugly
- The controls were wonky (mirrored bark area when the dog faced left)
- A bit too short
- Instead of barking I found myself pushing the sheep at some point instead

Nothing inherently bad in it, good job overall :)

Fun game, I found myself stuck at level 5. It seemed most efficient to get a herd of sheep moving then bounce them into the pin area. Really quite enjoyable.
