Switcheroo by Prologi

[raw]
made by Prologi for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Link https://prologi.itch.io/switcheroo

ezgif.com-gif-maker (1).gif Basicly, every 10 seconds either your shoot side or game view mirrors. Your goal is to beat the final boss, a 20-sided dice that belongs to an evil mage who turned you into a hexagon.

It might be a little bit confusing when you're being turned into a hexagon.

I think about making this into a full version. What do you think about it?

WASD - move LMB - shoot RMB - secondary skill

Each level new pick ups and enemies: - 1 lvl - Health pack and simple enemies - 2 lvl - Switcheroo and fast enemies - 3 lvl - Spread shot and big enemies - 4 lvl - ... do I really have to spoil everything? - 5 lvl - ... final round with new stuff

  • Later on just more difficulty

Fullscreen recommended! Enjoy!

Our ideas have something in common :)
The main switching mechanic is a pain in the mass: animation lasts long so you can lose some health due these periods.
Well done!

That was a lot more addicting then I was expecting. I really like the amount of powerups (Although I didn't use them much since I found it easier to just run in a straight line) and the screen flip always threw me for a loop

really cleanly executed. Feels like a very complete game. I laughed the first time my stuff got switched. Made it to level 3.

I thought I really had this under control...until the screen flipped. That really throws you off!

Fun intense music and I also liked the pixel art shader. Great work!

There is nothing I don't like about this game. Fantastic all the way around. Enjoyed the retro graphics and sound, and the control switches felt like me pointing the Vector3 the wrong way. ^_^

This is so fun!! Super hectic, and definitely annoying when it switches around, but dang it's super enjoyable! I love the music too! Awesome game!

THat was fun, although, I had a bit of trouble with the controls. Maybe something to do with the mouse position and perspective. Very cool game though

This is absolutely my favorite game of the jam that I've played so far! The graphics/audio are simple but very well polished. Very easy to start playing, no instructions needed. And the gameplay isn't something that I've really seen before in other games -- switching around the controls threw me for a loop (in a good way!).

My only criticism is that the boss's projectiles are too easy to defend against. The player's reload speed is so much faster, and your bullets destroy the boss's bullets, so just kinda shooting anywhere will keep you from taking damage from him. (Though, in your favor, I think it's much better to have an enemy be too easy than too hard in a game jam.)

Is there a final boss or does it go on forever, I'll try again if so. The idea is simple but you've done it so well! really fun game :)

Feels very complete game! The art style is a smart choice for a jam game and it is also very stylish.

Some switcheroos were obviously (as designed) very confusing. Mirroring controls is often thought to be quite annoying for the player. Here it did not matter too much since it is a pretty short game. But if I played for longer periods of time I think it would start to get very jarring for the brain.

But overall, a very solid game. Good work!

Visually a very stunning game and everything from the soundtrack to the pieces to the gameplay contributed to a very polished and stressful mood.

I'm not 100% sold on the idea of flipping controls, it didn't feel much of a mechanic I could learn to get better at. I mainly just ran away and focused on shooting behind me, which meant that a most of the levels were too easy.

If your game area would've been a more of an enclosed arena, I would've felt like I should do more than just run and do damage. It's a very solid game nonetheless and very impressive for a jam game :)

Was very cool! I did have some trouble controlling the roll, I am not sure if it was because of the switches or something else, it seems to get misaligned with the cursor. Overall very fun and chaotic!

Fun little game! I enjoyed that the switcharoo wasn't just left / right / up / down. Very challenging to figure out the direction changes.

I love the art style! Very well polished game. I got to level 6 but then there didn't seem much incentive in continuing as it was all rather the same. Upgrades could fit well into this game. I'm generally not very fond of controls switching but I felt in this case it wasn't as annoying as it usually is and I could get a hang of it. Good music too. Good game!

Enjoyed the art style. The gameplay was pretty intuitive, I think it would have been nice to make the 10s timer more apparent, so you could be more prepared for a switch.

That music track is a total banger, good stuff! Liked the switcheroo, always felt confusing. The game felt a bit on the easy side as running away in one direction always seems to work. But it was a lot of fun regardless. Good job!

I love the aesthetic. Graphicly this was really good, but also just from a gameplay standpoint it was really fun. I am a sucker for wacky mechanics and the moment when the entire screen space flipped and started displaying backwards was so damn cool.

@prologi I think it could turn into a great full-fledged game! This is just my opinion: but I think you'd want to focus on adding *other things that could be switched*, rather than just adding more levels/more enemies. For example, maybe on a later level, your input keys (WASD) move you in an inverted direction. Perhaps a powerup that delays the next switch by another 5 seconds. Or maybe your health and the bosses' health switch. (I have no idea if these would be any good, just throwing them out there.)

I love the 3d pixel art thing, it really made the simple models pop and feel exciting. The mechanic was cool. The music was a bit aggressive but it added to the mood (the mood was panic!).

I had a great time and I think I won, unless Rewind was just setting up a second level. Solid entry all around!

Cool game. My brain turned into jello when trying to invert the controllers but I like it. The aesthetics were special and put me off at first, but after playing for a bit it grew on me and I started to think it was a good match for the game.

Really great aesthetic, I loved it! The switcheroos really messed with my brain. I'm sure the flipping of controls is overall a pretty cool thing, I just could never really get it to work. Ended up with quite a simple strategy, run backwards and shoot. Seemed totally safe.

Look great! I think it needs some better UX about telling the player which direction has swapped, but besides from that I had fun.

The music is a banger! I really liked the overall "composition" of the game and that everything fits together so well. The graphics are a nice implementation of a pixel are look and the idea is very original; even though it may sometimes be a little overwhelming. All in all, a very fun and surprisingly polished game!

Loved the concept, a Vampirelike shoot em up! As discussed on the stream, I'd include an option to choose a permanent upgrade from a list of 2-3 available ones at the end of each level, to encourage replayability. Mechanic is great and the art style is not exactly my cup of tea, but I think it works. Music was a little bit repetitive. Mobile version would be awesome. Good job, especially for compo!

Not sure if making another VS clone with a confusing mechanic that just makes things harder without rewarding you as a player at any point is all that fun.

Have your tried riding a bike with inverted controls? Can be a fun hard exercise for a bit.

Have you rode a bike that inverts controls every 10 seconds (but not consistently)? Well...

Also, posting this anonymously so there won't be a backlash. I'm tired of every game having the same wall of positive comments regardless how fun it is really to play it. Let's break this corrupt cycle of hypocricy :)

Despite sucking with inverted controls, I still enjoyed this game. I'd love to see this game get developed further after the jam is over. I noticed so long as I ran away from the enemies, I could easily win the game without issue, so I think to prevent people from just constantly backing up, you could give them a goal they HAD to reach, such as saving Meeples -- other people the Wizard have turned into game pieces.

Really fun and simple. If you are planning on making the full version still being pixelated 3d, I do happen have a couple of shader and camera tricks to make a pixel-art like visuals without all the edges go all shimmery. If you would like to see that, I can update some demos when I'm awake. Good luck on your full game!
