Slim Reaper by rustynoob
Controls: arrow keys or wasd to move
Mouse to buy upgrades, repairs and fuel
Watch out for the price when buying upgrades, that cost ramp is steep?
If you can't move you may be out of fuel or too damaged.
If the particles freeze the game is over, you lost.
Grim's son doesn't want to follow in the family business so he is taking up a different kind of farming. Help Slim have a productive harvest so he doesn't have to go work for dad. Concept: drive Slim around the fields in his tractor. Collect the corn to earn money. The longer you wait the more corn you get but don't wait to long to harvest or the corn may pop damaging near by crops and reducing yields. Use the money to buy power ups like more seed, fertilizer, or sprinklers to help improve your yield but don't spend too much or you won't be able to afford fuel for your tractor. Also watch out for cows in the field. They may fertilize the corn but hitting them is hard on your tractor and repairs are expensive.
We didn't have time to do any play testing but here it is.
About all the red orbs
Why are there red orbs all over the place? everyone wants to know. Well the answer is simple I intended to make use of lots of particle effects and this is the default particle in my engine. Here is what the particles would have looked like if I had had time to finish setting them up.
Harvesting corn: Mostly transparent brown and grey particles when the corn is harvested that slowly float around like clouds of dust.
Manure: Tiny dark green particles that float up from the area being fertilized
Exploding all over the place: When the corn gets too ripe it is supposed to explode into popcorn.
Hitting Cows: These are supposed to be red spurts but the cow dies too quickly and the particle emission rate is to low.
About the team: The team is composed of myself, two of my sisters and my nephew. They provided design ideas and art and I did the programing.
About the engine. The engine is a javascript engine that was coded by chatGPT over the last two weeks with grate care in crafting prompts and refining ideas until things worked like I wanted them too. It is based on an Entity Component System architecture with systems that handle input, graphics, music, sound effects, particles, physics, and more. This was it's first real test making a full game with it. Up until this point I had only made feature tests. During the jam I discovered a few bugs and missing features with the graphics and input systems that ended up costing me about a day and a half which is why the game published in the state it did with zero balancing.
After Play testing there were a few game breaking bugs so I updated with the following fixes. I then went back and made one more update to fix bugs that the original bug-fix introduced. When the voting for the jam is over we will be pushing another update that doesn't have all the red orbs everwhere.
edit: If you can't move you are probably out of fuel or too damaged, try fueling up or repairing from the menu on the right.
UPDATED WITH THE FOLLOWING BUG FIXES:
fixed collision box on player
fixed UI element multi click bug.. mostly
fixed sprite disappearing
Fixed sprite drawing bug that added the origin instead of subtracting it drawing the sprites in the wrong place.
fixed popcorn not having callback set to damage other crops and tractor - This broke the balance of the game so you can never make money once the initial crop starts exploding.
Fixed overlapping gauges
Fixed the bug that lets you buy things even if you are in debt- accidentally made cows free in the process so enjoy that while it lasts.
I went back again and fixed these last two bugs because I introduced it in the first bug-fix by mistake and it made the game less like the original
Corn is drawn in the wrong place so corn grows to the east and south of the filed.
after update Cows were free
Known Bugs: I'm not pushing these fixes these until after voting is over because they do not effect play-ability significantly enough and they are more balance altering.
Upgrades get really cheep and then really expensive really fast. careful your you may find yourself infinity in debt
Driving diagonally makes you drive faster but also uses twice as much fuel
People with faster computers will use more fuel. I mistakenly tied fuel consumption to the frame rate instead of the distance travelled.
OTHER NOTES:
For the jam I am going to have to leave the particles as they are. I know they can be a bit overwhelming in their current state but finishing that would be adding art that isn't there now so it feels like cheating.
No sound effects or music for now. We didn't have time to make any or get them in for the jam so that will have to wait to be added once the voting ends.
If you like what you played check back once the voting is over and I will upload an updated version with sound and particles and hopefully better balance.

The bugs do make it more difficult to play. The controls and camera are smooth but the constant blood and mostly invisible tractor make it challenging to get a sense of what you're doing at the moment. I was also able to purchase anything regardless of current funds. Purchasing cows had some amusing side effects: the entire field would become completely covered in cows, my money would tank, and the cost of cows would skyrocket :D
It's only blood if you hit a cow. lol. It's just that all the particles all look alike because I ran out of time before I set them up. Well polish it up and publish in the extra.
Also could benefit from some simple audio track and some sound effects, doesn't need to be too many.
Overall solid work there!
Awesome game! xD
