Rogue 'n Royal by Bauke Regnerus

[raw]
made by Bauke Regnerus for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Rogue 'n Royal places you in the role of a messenger who needs to deliver a cure to the ill king within time.

Rogue 'n Royal is a lighthearted minimal adventure game where any conflict or challenge is resolved by a minigame. It's a rather short game to finish, but there are several little stories and secret to find on a new play-through.

Drawing simple art and creating a cute world is just a lot of fun!

Nothing rogue about it

The idea for a world made up of tiles with different dimensions was a concept I had in mind from the start. Initially I wanted to create a colony sim, but I couldn't find a satisfying implementation of the theme. So I switched to a roguelike/lite instead. I abandoned that idea suspecting writing generators would take too much of my time, only to find out that all the manual labor takes a lot of time too. Hence a very short game (yet with a lot to discover).

A little help

A hot topic, but I used ChatGPT to help me write the poems and flavor texts. I'm a sucker for narrative games, but since I'm not a native English speaker, it's not something I can pull off without external help. Still, the devil is in the details, and I had to correct and edit the texts quite a lot.

Neat little game! I found the "time limit" a bit dissapointing has a death mecanics in comparaison to every other mechanics the game offer! Aside from that the game is really great and well polished, congrats!

first, i want to say how much i was pleased when i launched the game and everything looked so nice, polished and fluid! you've made an amazing job pulling out this game in 3 days, hats off! the implementation of minigames was cool, and i could only wish there was more content because i really liked playing it!

here are two minor things that would have make it even better: some info on the items on your bag (more than just the name, because i didn't know what the artifacts were for until i got to use one in the boss fight), and a slightly improved random generation for minigames (because i got 2 mazes with zero red node in one single game, so it was kinda easy).

Overall, **really** great work!

@amarokczukay Thanks for the feedback. Some minigames indeed had some issues with generating its content, because I declared some integers where floats where required. =D

Talk about polished! Really nice visuals and overall experience. Loved the gameplay and inclusion of varying mini-games based on different approaches to situations. Felt like the Day timer was a bit lacking and could have used with a small bit more feedback, but overall amazing game!

Loved the presentation and mood of the game and would really like to see this developed into a full fledged roguelike story game.
My only complaint is abou the mini games being exceedingly brutal, but that's just a personal preference.
Great job!

This is awesome! I love the way the different events give you traits and items so you can prepare for the end. I see a lot of potential here! I hope you carry this a bit further. Also with agile and mask the king dodge event was a blast :D

@listlessonion It's quite hard to balance these minigames during development. For something like that a good group of test players is required. So yeah, it's rough around the edges for sure. Thanks for the feedback.

Loved the style, the different types of mini-games and the music.
I deem the very idea of this type of game is very creative.
I'd love to hear more SFX.

Wow, masterfully done. Love the different minigames for various encounters, and the game looks exceptional with a lot of polish. I tried to dodge the king at the end and failed, but had a lot of fun getting there. Awesome job.

What a great game! Everything is really polished, fantastic job! This is such a unique concept and the way you managed to allow for branching decisions that affect how you take on different things is really cool. I'd love to see this expanded on in the future, this has a lot of potential for sure! Reminds me a bit of Reigns.

Super awesome! The minimal art works great, and the color scheme is very pleasant. Music is also pleasant.

The adventure itself felt nice. And it actually being short invited me to replay a couple of times to see the stuff that you can find on other tiles  I liked the character development system as well - always liked the "learn by doing" systems.

Overall, it's a great jam game and kudos for creating it!

Top marks for mood! Really well-polished and I enjoyed the tile flipping mechanic. Fun pulling back the curtain sort of gameplay. As others have said, some of the minigames are a bit problematic or even impossible (some of the mazes), but I enjoyed myself. Never managed to defeat the king, which I could have retried him without replaying the whole thing.

Very impressive entry, there's just a lot of content while still feelings polished. Some of the minigames were very hard (especially some of the mazes), but it was a lot of fun just exploring and seeing what the items and traits are doing.

All around good title.

Pros:

Slick UI

Engaging Gameplay

Simple but choice filled progression (different paths)

Cons:

Frustrating because No Checkpoints and Combat can spike in difficulty

What the crap. How many games did you make?? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I absolutely adore the look and style. The amount of mini-games + level of polish is astounding. :open_mouth:

It was such a fun game to play through multiple times. Such a neat idea and vibe. The music is perfect too. :ok_hand: (If not a bit intense in parts. lol). It was hyping me up. Even opening a treasure chest was stressful.

A very well made game! Loved how it builds a story about your character, and how you only get a fixed number of turns to explore the maps. However, there isn't much that helps you decide which direction to go, maybe there should be some clues on what to expect where. The maze minigame requires you to use the arrow keys (no way one can click that fast in the right places using a mouse), which is quite unfortunate as everything else in the game is done with a mouse. I was rather disappointed that when failing the final minigame with the king (the only time I've failed in this game!) I got to the very beginning. Also wish the game was a bit longer, it ended just when I started to feel the spirit of adventure.

Overall I liked the concept a lot, I think it can be a really good game with enough design iterations & polish.

"The king awakens!" Really pretty game and cool idea -- loved the tile concept of exploration and the minigames. I liked that the minigames had different difficulties and powerups beased on exploration :D Really cool stuff

Super cute and creative!! I love the amount of content you managed to have with only a little bit of flavor text and minigames. The graphics are very unique and really sell a sort of tabletop aesthetic. Although, I was a bit disappointed when I found out (by losing) that the game had a time limit.. There was so much on the board to explore and do, but the time was way too short, so on my second go around I just avoided everything and went straight through to the end with barely enough time, missing all the fun. I think this game could have really taken advantage of the fun adventure and roleplay side and went a bit harder into the exploration! If I had more time I would love to 100% a game like this, seeing the new characters and situations that appear is the most fun.

(Tried the Linux version, worked fine.)

It's nice to see something this polished. It all played very fluently. However, I think they're also some issues with the concept as implemented as a jam game; namely that you're stretching yourself too thin.
It's true that the sum is more than the parts, especially when it comes to this particular game, but the individual parts are threadbare -- any less and they wouldn't have functioned at all.
I think this also shows the weakness of using AI (as it is right now). It's perfectly serviceable, but bland. I think I'd have preferred something with character, even if it had been worse.

Possible bug: I could always give the king the skull, even if I didn't have it.

The art-style is nice too, and the main menu is quite full-featured! ('Not the band' made me smile.)

@remco Thanks for the response. You are correct, I'm very bad at make jam games, in the sense of trying to get the most out of a single mechanic.

I love the clean Bauke style! A novel idea with the map traversal, and the mini games. The mini games ideally could have been fleshed out a little bit more, but thats the nature of a game jam.

I liked that there were different routes to travel that opened up different options. I also liked the various tile sizes making me think of "routes that let me explore more tiles".

It was good. I'd have liked to play your original submission to compare and would suggest keeping it available even with the bugs. I still rated but it feels a bit odd to rate the post jam version.
