Servant of Lord Doof by rainybyte

[raw]
made by rainybyte for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

You are a butler with work to do. But your annoying and lazy Lord keeps summoning you to do random stuff. Will you be able to do your job between the summons, or will the spear of an angry noble be your end?

Screenshot 2024-04-16 034736.png

Controls:

WASD or Arrow Keys or Left Stick to move

F or Space or Xbox A to interact

Sooo.... this is our first team jam, and we didn't get the fail state made in time, and a lot of other "quest chains" were left on the floor, but you can definitely see a complete game loop with very very rough edges :)

Thanks for playing our game #madeingodot

EDIT: As it turns out, the 3am export works wonders for making sure everything is broken. Apparently the exports were COMPLETELY borked and because of editor caching I hadn't noticed. Please use the so-called ~~'Hotfix 1"~~ "Hotfix 2" builds. The old uploads are left for verification

EDIT 2: With Hotfix 2, I believe we have solved the last of the bugs. No more standing on tables! The buggy tasks are also fixed. That means that as far as LD is concerned, I think this is the best it gets for us ;-;

However, stay tuned for when we finish the rest of the features outside of LD. We'll keep those builds separate in order to preserve the integrity of the jam ;)

If you notice any other bugs, please let us know!

PORT: We have ported from C# to GDScript in order to create a web port at https://rainybyte.itch.io/servant-of-lord-doof

*POST JAM VERSION: * https://rainybyte.itch.io/servant-of-lord-doof-post-jam Here you can play the version that represents our vision for the game we would have loved to release in time for the jam. Enjoy it, but remember to play and rate the original first!

@gamesplusjames Even more fun now that I re-exported! Someone informed me that I messed up in the late-night export, so it should actually work now XD

Love the art and sounds! And a very funny idea for 'summon'. Wish you had more time to complete it - but thanks for the entry!

@ugly-robot Yes! So did we. I'll keep working on update with more of my assets and @kraftbart's animation/sound effect work that we didn't have time to include.

Very amusing, poor butler  I like the art on him - he's so downtrodden. The game is indeed still rough, needs sanding .
You can see the core concept, though, and it's definitely a unique approach to the theme. Well done here!

You are probably aware of all the bugs that I could name, but just in case you aren't - my playthrough in particular was stopped by the fact that I could not put away the salad bowl. It was dropped on the table next to the lord and I could not pick it up again. It's also very hard to know what you are actually accepting/fulfilling when there are many interaction circles on the lord.

I played the web port, by the way, and it worked fine. I hope you finish it and manage to realize your original vision :smile_cat:

Fun game! I love the voice lines. I think it would be useful if there was some kind of indicator on the screen telling you the direction of the item you need to pick up.

I don't want to serve this man at all!

Fun concept and audio design. Creative use of the theme. Game broke a bit in fullscreen mode on a 4K monitor and could use a little polish around the edges but that just comes with the jam territory sometimes.

Congrats on finishing your first team jam!

Funny twist on the summoning theme  The butler animations are a nice touch and the audio made me smile. At some point I got stuck and couldn't understand what to do next, I'm not sure if this was a bug.

Anyway, this is a cool first team project, good job!

@fabula-rasa Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! I love your Godot plugin and greatly enjoyed your game! Yes we have a handful of bugs in the key area: the quests/tags. As you and @nazorus and others found, there are a couple broken ones. I made this 'elegant' system on the expectation I'd have a data-driven way of generating the QuestMarker nodes.... and then never made the tooling, so it's AWFUL if you write the quests by hand -.- lessons for next time I suppose!
@kallico intends to flesh out the original vision, at least the scoped down version of it, a less-buggy Great Hall where Lord Doof attempts to spear you if you take too long.

Also thank you to @olddog, @nadia-pixel, and all others for leaving us comments and ratings.

@james-7777 a pointer to the tasks would definitely be helpful, I agree.

@braktheman you know, I still haven't figured out how to the constant world-space viewport in Godot, if I figure out how to make it happen, I'll make sure we get it in @kallico 's version 2.0 :D

In the end, we are aware it's really rough, and while I don't expect high marks for graphics or fun, I do hope you all enjoyed our interpretation of the theme, and our attempts to fill the little bit we had with our own brand of silly quirky humor. It would warm our heart to know that we made joy in the

It's an interesting concept. Although sometimes there are circles of interaction that I cannot interact with, I have enjoyed it.
Good job!

As others have said this is just a rough idea of a game, but I think that's what ludum dare is for! There's some fun ideas in there and with some finishing touches it could be great! I thought it was really funny though even in this state!

We have fixed all the bugs in the Jam release, meaning any new additions from here on will be new features, and won't be shown here. When we get our v2 out, it'll probably be on the itch page. If you enjoyed the game before, but ran into a bug, we'd be grateful if you could give it another look and let us know if it's fixed. (also you wouldn't want to miss any of the voicelines from @kraftbart)

That was a great idea! I can see the brilliant concept and theres many variables to try to pull off in such a small time. Animations great, voices and little artworks on the wall were brilliant. Thank you for sharing your work

Smooth controls and efficient project. This Lord is very heavy. This is an interesting interpretation of the theme. The animations are really cool - and the background sounds/music too. A solid entry - for a poor butler. Well done. I wish you the best ++

To anyone still interested, we made a v2 that more closely represents what we would have loved to put out for the jam. It's in the description as a separate link. Discussion about it should be on its itch page. Enjoy! :D

Interesting take on the summoning theme. The game was fun to play, the bell will haunt me for a while though. I couldn't complete any tasks after a couple but it was still fun.

Man this was hard! The idea is very funny though, and I'm glad you continued working on the post-jam version. With some more polish this has potential! Thanks for showing up on stream, here's the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2136428350
