The Wrong Book by adam-gould

[raw]
made by adam-gould for Ludum Dare 55 (COMPO)

What happens when an evil wizard gets their hands on the wrong book? They have to go back to square one! Fret not, however, for there are thousands out there ready to become your cultists! The Wrong Book

Change Log

17th of April - Fixed a bug with the WebGL version that caused the UI text at the top of the screen (resource counts and volume controls) to stop rendering starting from the first time you produce a resource.

Info

Hi! I hope you enjoy The Wrong Book - I had a lot of fun putting it together. You can press F at any time to switch Fullscreen on and off, but aside from that the game is designed entirely to be played with a mouse.

Screenshots here have very limited information because I want to leave the discovery up to you!

Heeeeey, I beat the game - *DUN DUN DUN DUN* Heeeeey, I beat the game! Absolutely amazing game, took most of my lunch break with this. I love you included voice acting, and the end music was the chef's kiss. :)

@manabreak My siblings and my wife have been singing it at me near-constantly since I uploaded it. No regrets.

zut I caused the apocalypse! Very nice idle game... like the others people I find that the music and sounds are really good... everything is rather funny. On the other hand when I played in full screen, the texts were tiny and it was difficult to understand the game. So i let the game in a tiny window and zoomed my screen manually and it was more comfortable. Thanks also to the cultists who don't need to be clicked on to provide materials.

@piero-pbes-studio I did have the UI scale up to avoid that problem, but at the last minute I realised that it breaks the tooltip and context menu popups so I had to disable it :(

Idle game with strong RTS vibes (especially the unit voice lines). The VO overall was such a devious treat. Thank you!

that was awesome haha. Favorite game of the jam thus far. The only negative I have is that it took a lil bit of idle gaming before I figured out the pie mechanic. (thank you for allowing the idle repeating mechanics!)

finished it in 15m, like it, backing me into some sort of clickers i think?

i also found a bug, when you can put any structure on where imp stands

Incredible entry, it feels super complete, the voice adds so much and is also very funny. It's often risky for a dev to do their own VO but you pulled it off perfectly. And the ending was brilliant too. I love a good incremental game. This will definitely score near the top for humour, and I think pretty high overall too - loved this one!

Very very sweet entry, congrats :) . I don't usually play these types of games, but this one was very hooky! Bravo!

Played just a bit, probably even with the bug on.. I will try the downloadable in some time, thanks!

Very fun game and incredible voice acting. The upgrades go surprisingly deep and the game itself is extremly satisfying. Overall well done.

Extremely well done! The voice acting is hilarious and the gameplay has enough changes to not too repetitive for the duration it lasts  I would have loved some keyboard shortcuts or the selection not being cleared for every click though!

This game is a perfect experience.
It is funny, it is well made, the audio is of rare quality, and there is a well-conveyed plot!
Congratulations!

At first I thought "Is this a Tim Minchin reference?" when I saw the name of the game. After beating it, I'm 90% sure it is, but I'd still love it if you could confirm.

I really hope you win Compo, this is the most fun I've had so far in this LD :D

@heytherewill not consciously - I am however a big Minchin fan (narrowly missed out on an opportunity to see him live 12 years ago which I'm still kicking myself over) so maybe some of his influence crept in a bit!

And thank you for the kind words!

Cool game! I enjoyed the gameplay and the RTS vibes from the voice acting. Nice graphics, audio and song :)
The only slight inconvenience is that when the window with the selection of an action is open and it is not active, because there are not enough resources for it, I expected that when the resources appeared, it would become active, but I had to open the selection window again. Nevertheless, the impression of the game is very positive.

Audio definitely 5/5!
The gameplay is rather simple, but it is fun and that's the best combination you can have on Ludum Dare jam. I haven't experienced any problems, it was fun, and I was able to play on my own pace, I appreciate that there were no timers, or "hurry!!!" mechanics. I was able to read everything carefully, and enjoy the game.

Brother, how are you not a professional voice actor?!

This was fun!!
Hated all the clicking in the start, but the reliefe I got from automation was perfect!

I enjoy this type of game and the theme was amazing!

I tryly expected the Last summoning to be another burger, all that work, and you get a burger.

@thatsommes honestly, I considered it. If I ran out of time, it was going to be a second burger

This was well constructed and fun! At fist I was a bit disappointed that you have to always repeat the commands, but that (partially) got solved later by researching automation  I only had some difficulties finding the mechanic to get cakes, so I was stuck for a while to get the last summoning circle.

Remembered to have played a game of you some jams ago, so wasn't surprised about the superb voice acting, the ending song got me by surprise though  Surely that was the music Lovecraft had in mind when the old ones awake

That was actually really fun! And the song at the end was the icing on the cake.

Voice over sounds professional, it is really really good! Mechanics are well thought-out, progression seems to be smooth, not to slow or too fast, and I like pixel-y style. I'd say sprites of my followers and shrines I liked especially, more than my summons. Looking with options of Devourer, wow that got darker xD
Very good theme representation imo!
