Finding a tiny red beetle on a huge island too hard? Not if we work together! 🤝

Welcome to The Red Beetle Squad, an online asynchronous multiplayer game where each player must use the powers of different characters to find a tiny red beetle hidden somewhere on a big island. 🪲

Mouvement.gif

🔍 Game Concept

You control a team of characters, all adorable and quirky, each with a unique ability to help you on your quest. The goal is simple (in theory): find the right red beetle and bring it back to the Beetle Altar. 🏝️

Each character has their specialty: the Detective 🕵️‍♂️ searches objects, the Naturalist 🪧 places signs so no one loses track, the Courier 🚴‍♀️ brings the beetle to the altar... and we even have a Ghost 👻 who, honestly, doesn’t do much. But hey, it’s cute, right?

Panneaux.gif

🚀 Gameplay

  • Asynchronous Multiplayer: You’re never alone! You cooperate online with other players to complete this seemingly simple, but full of twists, mission. 🌐
  • 8 Unique Characters: Each has their own power. Use them strategically to find the beetle faster. 🦸‍♀️
  • Quick Games: Each run lasts less than a minute, so no pressure! ⏱️

🎨 Visuals and Sound

Vidu went all out to bring you colorful, stylized cartoon graphics. 🎨 And what about the music? 🎶 Each character has their own interpretation of the main theme, giving each run its own unique atmosphere. 🎧

⚙️ Platforms

  • PC and Mobile 🖥️📱
  • Playable directly online via HTML5, no download required! 🌐
  • Asynchronous multiplayer. 👾

🎉 The Team

This game was developed by Team Empreintes (Jaxime and Vidu), with the fantastic soundtrack created by Benjamin Widawski. 🎶 We hope you’ll have as much fun playing it as we had developing it! Thanks for playing! 🎮

🔄 Update on the Game

  • We modified the music system: now, starting a new run with a new character won't restart the music. Instead, it will continue playing from the same timestamp as the previous track. We fixed some bugs to prevent crashes when loading the map on iOS.
  • We fix some bugs that may allow player on Ios to stop crashing when map is loading.

I tried the itch link but it says that a password is required to view the page. Looks cool though

@daflamingpotato I think the page is pre-made. Since the JAM is still running (currently 4h to go).

I agree from what we can see already it looks great. And the gameplay concept sounds fun already.
Definetly coming back in 4 hours to check it out.

I LOVE the graphics and music, great job on making everything look animated and handmade, including the UI! Also, SO many choices for character classes! I tried playing on a bit on the most populated server using multiple characters, finally settling for the scanner robot and doing multiple runs around the whole island trying to scan as many places as possible. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to help my island find a beetle. Could be that the island is slightly too big, or maybe this will play better with friends that have additional way to connect, like chat or voice, and synchronize our efforts :) Good luck to other players in locating the lil' thing!

Okay I played one game on the tiny critter forrest ? found it in 47 attemps ? I got a clue from another player (@littulv) that player thermometer correctly!

THe game is fun, I'll probably have my little girls play it.

A go to my previous location button would have been nice because the beetle was quite far away and pinpointing it took some time!

Very polished! I'll have to see if I can get a group to fully test it out. But overally I'm very impressed. I guess maybe it would be nice to have a very clear way to play and character to choose if you're playing by yourself. But the visuals, mood, everything is great. And adding online, wow. Well done!

Really cool idea! It's sweet, looks fantastic and music is amazing! It takes a few runs to understand what you are doing but it works well when you do thanks to the diverse classes. I think the communication is a bit too limited tho, but overall you managed this complicated idea very well!

Wow this is crazy for a jam game, great job working as a team! Feels very polished.
I didn't understand how to play at first (thought the timer for the scout character was a count down, so the game kept ending before I even did anything xD) anyway nice job!

Very nice game!
The concept is as simple as it is good. It has a nicely low barrier to entry. Music is very fitting. The overall visual style is great.

The bigger assets, like trees and buildings, look a bit blurry in comparison to smaller assets like stones and the grass. I assume that they are scaled up(?). And the grass tiles are cut off in some places.

But besides that **it is a very cool game and I enjoyed playing**.
I can imagine this game going very well if you decide to develop it further.

After some rounds on a high populated map. I couldn't resist to try one alone. And what can I say... :D

* tbh I guess I got a bit lucky with the location of the bug and found it right next to the player spawn

@outstar -> Thank you very much ❤️ the rôle of the thermometer is crucial because it helps you to define the part of the map you need to search in ! Btw, thank you so much for your kind comment ✨

An interesting concept. I like that you can drop in and out of the maps so you aren't scrambling to find friends to play. Definitely requires some trial and error to figure out what the best characters to use are.

The idea of searching for bugs on a big island is very interesting and I like the possibility to play with different classes of characters. 🐞✨ Although it takes a little time to understand the mechanics, it only makes the game more fun.

Niiiice! The game is extremely cute, very innovative, has MULTIPLAYER OMG and is quite fun.
The onboarding is a bit rough with a lot of text but once you get into it it's really fun.

Big congrats on this one!

Ok honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this game won. The theme is on point and unique take on it makes it even better. Also this must be the best looking game this jam out of all I've played so far, as an artist myself I cannot stop admiring the character designs and the rich environment to the simple but super effective UI. I can see sharing this game with my friends and playing together during evening meetups on discord. 10/10

I love the sounds, they fitted well together and made it a coherent game together with the graphics. I struggled a bit regarding the objective, if there were wrong answers and alike. The idea is fun, choosing different types of powers so to speak was an interesting take. I thought it should be impossible to do this on your own- Seems I was right since its three of you.

This is a really fresh concept! I'm always impressed by games that manage to pull off multiplayer during the jam, it reminds me of a previous LD where one game was a collaborative art gallery. Asynchronous multiplayer feels like the right choice here, because it makes the game feel collaborative without having to wait for people to show up. Although I ended up staying to find the beetle by myself, which I guess most people will do unless they're playing with friends? It makes some roles like the Naturalist feel a little less useful, unless you want to place a beetle sign closer to where you're looking at the moment.

The roles feel quite complementary, and I could see it develop into something more real-time, similar to social investigation games. There's an impressive amount of art assets, and the music is especially catchy. I didn't even realize the theme had variations according to the character!

I want to point out the level of polish, too, as you bothered to include localization and most importantly a tutorial, which most jam games won't have time for. I wish the tutorial would tell you to use mouse clicks to move, as I was trying to use arrow keys or ZQSD (go France!) - and it would be even better if you supported both input schemes, as it's a bit cumbersome to move using the mouse when the camera is close. Something odd did happen to me: I didn't get any character-specific tutorials in my first playthrough. I only noticed it when I restarted the game and suddenly saw them. I would have been less confused initially if they had appeared.

Overall, congratulations on an impressive entry!

I could say the same about your game too! I love the art style and the gameplay is interesting, I've never seen a game quite like it. I love how it's a collaborative effort across the entire LD56 community to find that bug!!

That's a very clever game! Very well done, great art, sounds and music! Gameplay feels very nice as well! Good job!

I did encounter a few issues though:
- First try I didn't see any maps to play, had to refresh the page and try again.
- Second try played the map, found correct beetle and took it to the altar but failed. Took same beetle to altar again and it worked?

This is such a fun game, how you managed to come up with this in a weekend is beyond me. Such a cool idea. I love it! Not to mention the cute art style and music <3 I also liked the little texts beneath each character's names and just the attention to detail in general.
