Adelie - When We Were Young by Meep
Nurture your tiny creatures! Gather fish and deliver them to groups of hungry baby penguins.
Fish must be within the drop-zone (the region surrounding a group of baby penguins) upon dropping. Delivering multiple fish in one go yields combo bonuses, and there's no penalty for delivering more fish than requested (given it fits in the drop-zone).
Spikes periodically emerge from beneath the ice due to climate change or something, and (dangerous) baby seals occasionally roam. Mis-dropped, uneaten fish will spoil and create additional hazards. Health is lost upon touching a hazard, or when failing to feed a group of baby penguins (because heartbreak). Touching a hazard also automatically mis-drops your held fish.

Overall a visually stunning and fun game!
P.S. Your penguins are really cute and I want to pet them
Awesome job!
I agree with the other commenters that this feels at home on an arcade cabinet. Super creative, great work!
Very cute and fun! Simple and straightforward but rather challenging. Reminded me a lot of the recent Magic Garden game in UFO 50 but with a fun twist of not being locked to a grid. Very impressive given the console!
Great work, might come back later to hunt a high score!
Nice game though
Game was great! One issue I had though was differentiating between dropped fish and spikes since they have the same color.

I love that you managed to get music in this time! HYPE!!

Also Wanted to ask if youre fine with me using gameplay from the game in this LDs [score chasers tournament](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/$405421/ludum-dare-score-chasers-qualification-begins) intermission video. (Would play in the breaks of the tournament on my stream). Last year for reference

I was so relived later to find out you did make another Adelie game, and as always it delivers. Fun unique idea, fresh new concept and another chapter in Adelies legacy. You never stop impressing us and your games never disappoint. Here hoping for many more to come, all the best and congratulations on another fantastic entry o7 cheers.
@bigwhiteshogun: I was hoping no one saw that! D: I accidentally hit submit instead of save when drafting the LD page, and the itch page wasn't ready yet so I cleared the entry until then haha. And yeah, people catching on to (and ultimately enjoying!) Adelie's repeat appearances is what motivates continuing the series. :D Would definitely be cool to compile them into something like UFO 50 in the end!
And the little penguins and seals are adorable!
The only little thing I wish could have changed is that the fish, fish bone and spike being the same color, make them a little difficult to distinguish.

I may need to be more careful next time cause I hit spikes often and missed many combos but I get the fun of this game.
It could be a nice upgrade to drop the health bar and counter for tiny penguins (as the interface gets quite busy on higher scores) and make it so that they jump out of their zone and slide away once fed. The zone itself could show the time left somehow.
Spikes could be cracks in the ice where you lose your fish into the ocean?
I the drop zone mechanic is simple but add a great flavor to the game, well done!

my general strats:
1. feed the first pengus 3 fish but wait in their box until the timer is red. This is to gives you more fish by waiting, but also gives you more time to set up a long chain since the next pengus is in a group of 4 (am pretty sure the timer is directly tied to the number of pengus?)
2. make the a huge chain, completely ignoring the poor pengs until you have 1 or 2 hearts. If you lose a fish or two, don't worry, you completely ruined your run and just restart
3. just keep trying to make the longest chains you can safely make without losing fish and wait until the the timer is red so fish keep spawning. If you keep doing this, it kinda gets to the point where you can get plenty of fish really quick and spend most of the time fitting them inside the box. If you still have 2 hearts, skip a round of pengus to make a longer chain
4. eventually theres too many spikes and you gotta start turning in really small groups like 2-4 fish
I think this one of my top 3 fav Adelie games xD
even with really simple mechanics, theres a surprisingly amount of strats you can try and the controls smooth as heck
I love the risk-and-reward aspect (and the quadractic scoring makes the risk even more tempting). Unfortunately I'm a coward so I won't be getting much higher scores than these, hahaha 😅
Once again, this was just a nice, tight, polished action game experience
This might be a personal preference, but I do feel like it would be great if I could cash in all of my fish when my PENGUIN was in the safe zone, rather than it being dependent on whether or not each individual FISH was in the zone.
After a while, I felt like I had to be super slow and careful to fit in the zone, which felt a little antithetical to the fast-paced sliding mechanics of the game.
Again, that may just be me, though. Personal preferences aside, this was an awesome game!
Thanks for this game!
I love the graphics and music, and the gameplay is very fun! I like the risk/reward mechanic, with the extra fish being harder to deliver in the zone, but earning you more points! I also love how they turn into hazards when not delivered.
The game starts easy but quickly become very challenging, but after each game over, I just wanted to start another attempts as the game feels fair: If I loose, it's because I made a mistake, not because the game cheats or whatever.
Congrats for this great entry!

The movement (and visualization of such) feels really great- it's easy to ski around the playfield, and it's definitely possible to thread the needle and avoid hazards. Like others said, it has similarities to Magic Garden, but it's definitely more of an evolution and different take on the 'cash in' mechanic than a copy. The 'leftovers' becoming hazards is really creative, and the fact that the fish aren't grid-based adds an extra layer of trickiness. Also, the sound effects and music in this one are fantastic- and not just because of the inspiration taken from the penguin's namesake, hehe. And, lots of great visual touches that work with the gameplay to make things feel very tactile and responsive. (I love Adelie's spin!)
Really good work for a compo entry! Well done!
Those spikes can suck it tho. BRUTAL. My poor penguin babies starved because of those f*ing things.
A challenging and fun game!
Strong entry! Great work.
Everything about this game fits together so nicely, and the sound, graphics and wee touches like the spinning animation are all just so lovely. Excellent work!
