D.U.G.: Doug Under da Ground
(Ludum Dare 57)
Doug Douglas is a free-spirited, free-willed, freelance miner. As a dwarf, he’s seen his fair share of underground caverns and crevices, and he’s not afraid to go as deep as the job requires. He has an eye for treasure, and a knack for bargaining, so any spoils he finds become weapons in his arsenal. If you need some digging done, Doug “The Digman” Douglas is destined to be the dwarven delver for you!

D.U.G. is an action game about digging and finding gold. Gather skills to dig faster and harder and make as much gold as you can! Don’t take too long and beware too much power! Who knows what will happen? 😉

Thanks for playing!!

@onngd @batthecat tysm!
@gold-daniel sorry if it wasn't made clear, but you have to use the cursor to actually click the blocks. hope that helps!
@siilicac thank you so much! our sound designer did a killer job and i'm glad you appreciated it!
@xlu tysm! we were definitely going for an old school retro feel.
@rucksack thank you! i did the character design and animation on all but gizmo the kitty and the goblin, and each member of our team recorded VO for the character voices, so it's great to hear you enjoyed them!
The only thing: at the very beginning, it’s not immediately clear that you’re supposed to move downward.
It does make sense later, once the lava starts pouring from above, but I think the game should hint at that direction right from the first screen.
@teist thank you so much!!!
@flinge thank you!!! we’re going to start working on polishing and adding more once we’ve taken a little break, so keep an eye out! and thanks for the feedback! that seems to be an issue i’ve seen a few people have, so that’s high on our list of things to fix.
@sevadusk appreciate it! We're thinking about doing a bare minimum polish pass after the jam rating is done to fix up movement/collision, balance the gameplay, and add more maps/shops so we can finish the vision of the game.
@p-r thanks for the feedback! Appreciate you taking the time to give it a go.
@p1x3lc0w appreciate the detailed feedback! Totally agree, we ran out of time to implement the abilities we originally had planned (one was even being able to place a ladder to reach higher spaces) & just hooked up what variables we had available right in the engine haha. We'll take this suggestion with us towards a 1.0 release!
The atmosphere is nice and I liked the shop keepers.
The transitions (start screen, and the lava pouring down) were a good surprise for me, as I didn't see a lot in other LD entries :) good job !
I might mention that I didn't know what to do at first, the PLAY / QUIT really looking like buttons. I also had the same problem as gold.daniel (your second comment), then I read the comments to find how to dig.
I also struggled a bit with the jump to go diagonally up, as I needed to jump without pressing the side, and then move laterally. It was unfamiliar for me.
@paulhocker thanks so much for playing!
@kveg thank you so much kveg! buff michael is truly a force to be reckoned with. appreciate you checking us out! i loved seeing your game in the VDG stream
@jim-jagers gizmo was our ace in the hole for sure lmao. thanks for playing!
@madelinef thanks so much for checking us out! we've definitely seen the confusion in the main menu area come up a lot, so we're working on some changes to help relay that information a little better. hopefully that'll make for an easier playthrough.
@floppynub thanks so much for playing! we'll be patching and reworking some things in the future, so keep an eye out! :)
But the controls are very complicated to use as you need to target very near to the player.
I would try to just use the direction of the mouse as the dig direction instead of that you need be near.
Besides that it is a fun game.
By the way, I would advise the developer to create a slippery material and put it on the character so that he can slide along the walls.
I got pummeled fairly quickly by the lava - somewhere around the 3rd wave, but the game itself is an interesting concept of mining fast. Builds good tension! I like that the first round doesn't have anything chasing you to teach you how to play before it starts coming for you.
Nice job, team!
@jtap thanks for playing! yeah there is a little wonkiness with the movement that we're working on, and hopefully will be able to resolve with our first patch. in regards to the pocket, we had one or two areas that were intentional traps, so you may have fallen into one of those lol. definitely keep an eye out for our more polished versions!
@adam-gallina thank you so much for playing! we'll definitely take a reticle of some sort into consideration going forward. i'm glad you enjoyed it!
@carriedawg this is a great honor. may your doug be happy, healthy, and yearn for the mines.
@athospap thanks for playing! we definitely want to add some music elements in the future, so thanks for the suggestion! and there is a gold indicator on the upper right of the screen, but we could definitely make it a little bigger lol.
@johneyd i think part of the fun of D.U.G. is that you have to plan out your route as the lava comes so you can maximize how much gold you get while avoiding death, but i definitely understand where you're coming from. and that's a great idea in regards to the walls! that's something we'll definitely consider. thank you for playing!
@braktheman thank you brak! yeah having that first level to get a feel for it with no pressure was crucial, especially since some of the controls can be harder to get the hang of. we appreciate you checking us out!
