99 Penalty Kicks by AlexClay

[raw]
made by AlexClay for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

Description:

Play dirty to win the soccer championship finals!

Can you block all the shots in this arcade-style soccer game? I hope you’re not colorblind! I tried my best to make the colors contrast but you should still be able to get by if so.

Controls:

Move - Left/right arrow keys or A/D
Jump - Space or up arrow. Hold to jump higher. Can double-jump after level 9.
Pause - Escape or P

Notes:

  • Performance is better on Chrome than Firefox.
  • Performance is better with fullscreen disabled.
  • Minor update 1: Changed the font of the letters around the goal.
  • Minor Update 2: Fixed player shadow disappearing randomly. Bullets no longer collide with balls.

Have fun!!

Super fun game! Love the crowd feedback

Gameplay is easy to understand and feels super smooth. I love how many elements get added to the game, but I found it easier to just look at the trajectory of the ball instead of thinking about the signals in the later levels. The second level was actually the hardest one to pass because it was so quick!

Great job!

Loved it! The physics felt good, I liked the art

Agree with Lexu, just looking at the trajectory is a lot easier than looking at the signals most of the time. But that only takes away a slight bit of the theme-relevance, it doesn't change the fact that it's actually really fun to play.
And there's a good variety of mechanics layered on top of the base idea, really good game.

@lexu @thegoblinguy Thank you! I've seen someone IRL beat the game without reading any of the signs too. That said, I balanced the game for fun and didn't want to make it too hard to force players to rely on the text signals.

The keeper's hands trailing the movement of the player with the trail renderers was a nice visual effect. The in-world explanations for the various types of opponents were fun. I think you made the right call erring on the side of fun vs difficult. Great work.

this game was really great. i thought it would get boring, but it was phenomenal! and different powerups really changed the game, plus the double jump. and it wasn't too easy either, perfect level of challenge. good graphics, great sound. well done, well done.

@matt-swieboda My IRL friend also thought it would be boring even though *they* were the one to come up with the idea while we were brainstorming!

@alexclay I feel you, me and my friend that does the jam with me usually feel the same about our brainstorms. Your's is so great though! Also it reminds me a lot of like a more flushed out, full featured Mario Party mini game (and I love those!)

this game is awesome! Not sure why it only has 3/5 on newgrounds rating those people must not have appreciated how much fun it was!

@camden-obertop Thank you! Yeah, Newgrounds is a tough audience. My game for LDJAM 54 got a 3/5 stars on Newgrounds but a 4/5 stars overall on LDJAM.com, which baffles me.

Super fun! reach the 9 level, but double jump does is not getting triggered 50% of time for me so could not beat it.

That was really fun. Finished all the levels, the ! signals were a bit confusing about where they were going to actually go so I just tried to react to those instead of lining up where I was. Getting the double jump and larger goal was a nice surprise. Would love to see more powerups and wacky stuff added to this!

@wdebowicz Sorry about the issue. Thankfully, you’ve seen all the enemy types and powerups in the game and can make a fair judgement!

I can't replicate the issue on my end. Do you hear the trampoline sound when you press jump again? What browser and OS are you using? Are you making sure to hold the jump button on the second press? Thanks in advance!

Hah this is awesome, great interpretation of the theme! Very fun learning all the new mechanics. Nice graphics and audio! The little bits of story justification were pretty funny. Those damn hecklers bringing their space pistols in... Nice work : )

That was fun... I liked the concept and the controls... but ethically speaking I can't condone cheating... :)

This was super fun! Honestly, at first I found the coordinates above the players' heads to be not-so-helpful, but I got used to reading them fast and they became great!

I appreciate the absolutely absurd amount of things you have that signal you in different ways, then of course having the fans not signal and the red kickers "reverse signal" you! It's a great establishing of a mechanic, then subverting it.

The gradual introduction of mechanics is also very nice, though I found the "memorizing" sections to not be that necessary, especially given that it's not a mechanic you see inside the main "99" level (level 12).

The sound effects are simple and effective, and the music works well for the setting. And this is great, out-of-box thinking with the theme.

Overall a very fun, small game.

Interesting concept! It did seem like sometimes the main limiting factor was moving from target to target, so you could miss balls even if you knew exactly where they were going. I did like the new elements that were added in the later levels to keep it fresh, although I always found double-jumping a little tricky to pull off. Nice job!

Heh. Bribery. Are we the bad guys? XD This game feels like it takes a lot of skill to succeed even though we're cheating. I like the audio!
