Zone Out by ConradoClark

[raw]
made by ConradoClark for Ludum Dare 59 (COMPO)

My entry for LD 59 - Signal

Use your mouse to navigate the astronaut, find the keys, and escape the cosmic horror. Watch out for your fuel, and use your abilities to your best.

It's a "roguelike" of sorts, the map and the key locations are randomized.

Mouse over things to see the tooltip. But it's pretty straightforward.

I had a blast making this but oh boy was it difficult.

PS: Play on itch.io if you want full screen support.

  • Godot

That was a lot of fun but it was laggy, the downloads seem to be web builds and didnt work for me.
Really easy to figure out, i was so close to getting 2 keys but the lag put me off trying again, il check it out again in the future.

@steveofstevesgames (and everyone else) Thanks for playing! Much appreciated. I only made a web build (could've made a windows/linux build, in hindsight). I think I might know the reason for the lag: Initially, I had planned to load the objects in separate chunks, so that I would only update a few of them at a time (the ones you could see on the screen). However, I didn't have the time to refactor it so it's currently loading and updating the entire grid simultaneously.

@amo lol I somehow made escaping from a cosmic horror relaxing haha. But I agree, it's quite chill despite the theme, probably due to its cutesy visuals and turn-based gameplay

dangggg, this is good stuff, happy to see you went for a rogue-like style game as well, lol. The horror was perfect, not even being able to see it for a while, just KNOWING it's following you is absolute perfection. Then seeing it is no let down, just a huge black void that is SLIGHTLY faster than you. I panicked when I saw it and was like "I NEED ENERGY NOW", it was so fun and well executed, I'm happy there are so many cosmic horror entries in this jam. Art work is also great as well. Overall fantastic job mate :D

Cute art! All the movement and little bits of polish are nice. I like that you can't tell exactly where the cosmic horror is but you know it's closing in, it adds some good tension/suspense.

The signal radar mechanic is a good idea. The horror watching also has a really oppressive, tense feel. Controlling a floating astronaut while managing fuel and energy to find keys is a funny concept too(I guess the inverted visuals are supposed to give you that floaty zero-G vibe). Overall, well done!

I liked the overall gameplay idea but think it may be a little too random generating the resources as I tried a few times and kept running out of energy/never had enough to stun the enemy. Also as this is turn based, I think it looses a lot of tension when the monster is supposed to be "eldritch", maybe a funny/goofier enemy would have been better.

Overall, nice game. I enjoyed it! :)

Simple but effective. It’s a shame about the sound and music – given the sprites, I think it would have been brilliant!

The eldritch horror got me! I got a key and thought I was done haha. The managing of recources is fun, and the art looks great! I only wish the time inbetween turns would be a bit shorter, so you can move quicker.

I never managed to grab the second key before the horror caught me (at least 10 attempts).
But its a good entry !! ^^ It's sad you didn't have time to record the audio.

Surprisingly engaging. The rule seems elementary, but I was practically sweating while running away.

The cosmic horror got me! I'll try again! This is a really cute game in which you float around as an astronaut gathering energy (to use abilities, that stop the monster or gives hints) and fuel that keeps you going.

What I liked the most:
- Cute animations
- Space themed
- Lovecraft Themed
- The Abilities

What felt a little off:
- I didnt really see the monster coming, I was just dead.
- The missing music/sfx

I'll tryhard to win now, haha!
