Walkietalkie Runnie by mofox
Hello everyone, the game we made is called Walkietalkie Runnie. The main gameplay is escaping from the police under your partner’s guidance.
When we saw the competition theme — 'Signal' — we thought about using sound to transmit signals. Combined with some videos of police chasing fugitives in cars, we settled on this gameplay.
It’s worth mentioning that our first idea was to command the police to surround the fugitive, but we felt that wasn't exciting enough. So we switched to playing as the fugitive — and that turned out to be the right call. Tuning the channel, listening to instructions, and driving to escape all at once is quite challenging and pretty intense.
You might have noticed the word 'listen' — yes, you need to turn on your sound to play, because the partner’s instructions are actually voiced by our programmer himself.
Once you enter the game, you'll notice that one channel on the walkie-talkie has a voice. Tune to that channel — you can use the number keys 1, 2, 3, or click with your mouse. Then the game begins. Then you need to control your character — get close to the car, press the spacebar to get in, and then you're off, driving all the way. The game uses WASD controls: W and S control up and down (forward and reverse), A and D are for reversing and accelerating, and the F key is for a handbrake.

The rules are simple: don't let the police catch you, don't crash into anything, and listen to the walkie-talkie to choose the correct intersection — the one without police blocking it.
When choosing a direction, you don't need to worry about positioning. Just hold down the movement key for the direction you want.
We hope you have fun playing our game!

We fixed some bugs after jams and uploaded the wrong zip. If you have tried this, I'm very sorry for that.

Keep it up!
And also the part up until you get to intersection where you have to decide is quite long, I drove there for quite a while just dodging some barely visible cars (the street being black and the other cars also being black did not help here, making them some other color would've helped identifying them quickly!).
And as the street was quite long to drive through I thought that it was quite easy and not that interesting to drive untill i reached the fateful intersection where I needed to decide where to go.
I thought that maybe some police cars should be chasing you visible on the left side of your screen at the very start, as to indicate: You cant stop you must go full throttle and try to make up a distance to the police to then escape. Also the way it is right now there should be something more to be done to have the player interact/be busy with something while they are driving, maybe instead of having the radio frequencies set to just 1 2 and 3 you have a real radio with a turning nob and you have to dial in the actual frequency of things while driving? because just pressing 1 2 and 3 while driving felt quite easy and not all that difficult.
I think giving the player an easy mechanic like driving and dodging some cars that are easily visible so that I can focus on the radio and easily see them in my peripheral vision would be nice and that paired with the more demaning mechanic, like dialing in the radio and switching frequencies (maybe you get a note and you have to dial in one frequency and there you get the info that you need to frequency hop because otherwise the cops will know about you guys, so you search the next frequency and then the next etc until you found the right one and get to know where to turn right, left or go straigt maybe?
That would round things up, because as it is right now its quite hard to understand what the actual signals are (just audibly it was hard hearing the actual words that I assume you recorded yourself? Not to blame you at all, just a friendly hint!) and then it was quite easy to drive and quite easy to switch between channels and I think it should be the otherway around:
Make the mechanics harder and the information should be easy to get once you got the mechanics right!
Other than that I found the concept really cool, I dont know why you would want to exit the vehicle (that mechanic seems kind of out of place to me) but I did not have any crashes or something like that!
Was cool playing your game!
Actually, the news channel information also has an impact. For example, we did implement a car accident in the middle of Third Avenue, as well as wildlife appearing on Fourth Avenue. But it seems no one has reached those parts yet, probably because the earlier levels are too long, haha.
Regarding the getting-out-of-the-car mechanic, our original idea was that players would need to get out to perform certain tasks. For instance, if the car runs out of gas, the player could switch to a car of a specific color and continue driving. So a level was supposed to involve more than just driving. Unfortunately, we just didn't have enough time to finish this game before the deadline. It's a real pity.
We will consider the radio operation — it is indeed too simple right now, and the content played on the radio is also a bit monotonous. Finally, thank you again so much for playing our game so attentively. Our sincere thanks!
The failure penalties are a bit too severe. If you hit a car, you will fail immediately or even close the game. This makes it less motivating for people to keep trying. Judging from the voice accent, could it be from a Chinese person?
