Welcome to ~~The Elder Futhark Speak And Spell Game~~ Runic Ascendancy! Your goal is to crush the evil denizens of the cursed forest and come out the other side. This will not be easy, but you have a powerful tool to aid you: runic magic. Combine runes to cast spells, defeat your enemies, and then discover their binding invocation to gain a new spell.

Keyboard

The keyboard is small when not full screen. That's basically fine, as you can type things out almost normally. Here's some caveats:

  • There is no V sound in runes; v is f.
  • There is no Y sound in runes; y is j.
  • a, like "lance", is a. a, like "bark", is a different rune, mapped to q. Or shift-A.
  • "sh" is mapped to x. Or shift-S.
  • "ng" is mapped to c. Or shift-n.
  • "th" is mapped to y. Or shift-t.

It takes some practice, and you can sound out the words! That's the point! Learn your magic and you'll be disintegrating (an actual spell) your foes in no time!

Uh, the theme?

When I think of "Signal" I think in terms of "signal and noise". So, I thought I would make a wordle with lies (e.g. Fibble) but based on the elder futhark. As the gameplay unfolded, it became obvious mixing lying with a new alphabet would be asking way too much of the jam crowd. So, there's not a lot of "noise". But, that's where the theme came in.

This is really cool! I love the sound for the runes. I really liked figuring out what runes would sound out what spell, but I didn't get much time for that because in the mean time I was getting attacked. Maybe this would work better in some sort of turn based game? Or I was just playing it wrong.
But all in all great game and awesome idea, good work :)

I've fixed the softlock and added an easy mode (doubles the attack time, reduces enemy health a little, adds a free binding). Also add fullscreen and tab-zoom for the keyboard.

Neat!

I kept waiting for healing spells to show up, but it seems one has to make do with the occasional shield and otherwise just attack as fast as possible. In the end, I managed to vanquish six enemies.

There were a few confusing things, such as sometimes getting just two bindings (= Wordle guesses?) while other times getting seven, and like not being able to type the next spell yet because the last one was apparently still busy. A sound effect or any other effect when one is allowed to start mashing in the next sequence of runes one has prepared in one's mind would be helpful.
