Space Pawn Space Shop by bjornstenlund

[raw]
made by bjornstenlund for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

Welcome to the famous Space Pawn Space Shop, situated comfortably along the γ66λ space route. Come here for all your space pawn shop needs!

As the owner of the shop, your job is to pawn the correct items to your alien customers, but to be a good pawnbroker is to know your customers. Sometimes a customer does not know what they actually want, and need you to guide them in the right direction. Sometimes a customer is lying out of their tentacled backside. It is your job to pawn the right item to the right customer. Too many strikes, and your shop is closed down by the Galactic Commerce Bureau!

Learn all there is to know about the different kinds of aliens in the galaxy - and serve them up their request. Listen to all kinds of Alien Radio by changing the signal - and keep your customers satisfied - by reading their body signals. Play until you can reach the amazing S-Tier!

As you can read in the title - signal is everywhere and definitely always was.

This was part of Ludum Dare 59 with the theme Signal

Thank you for playing and calling us HD haha - we are unfortunately not Catmitts - but I can say from the bottom of my heart that I wish I were.

Pretty sure the customers were in league with aliens, given the whole three finger situation :D

@universeflow
Thank you! We lost our usual 3d artist friends this year - so our very creative programmer had to step in with his trusty pen, pad and scanner!

@bambutcher
Hahaha you might have a point there!

love the silly visuals and audio. game itself slightly confusing and possibly started moving a little too fast? good work

I actually 100% agree with that assessment - I think with one day of just tightening the game loop we'd probably have killed it - but that's the jam-life

Immediately recognized this as coming from the team of Deep Truth. Found the audio and visuals highly amusing.

very fun graphics and audio, liked the intro song especially. the gameplay was quite fun, i enjoyed the trial and error process of figuring out what's what

Oh my god thank you hahaha - and yes - this is the same ramblings of a mad man - but this time I put way too many hours into the radio instead of the deep truths

@eeva
Hahaha thank you! SPACE PAWN, SPACE SHOP!

Game's graphics and style were top notch! I loved all the radio stations, I took an entire playthrough just to listen to the songs 10/10 in the audio department. Gameplay was simple yet fun, although there were many times I couldn't give anyone anything because I was waiting on the correct items. Overall one of my favorite entries so far! Well done :)

Oh we definitely aim to please on that front hahaha - thrilled to hear it

@conduit
Oh thank you so kindly, it feels great to know that my spazzing with a guitar into the mic and wasting 12 hours into the radio feature wasn't wasted hahaha - the graphic style actually came from a decision where our 3d artists couldn't make it this time - so one of our programmers just brought out pens and paper and scanned it all in!

@apt-prose7
Well said man, haha - hopefully we left you relaxed

The signal not only serves as a means of communication through broadcasting but also through physical means, which I think is very relevant to the theme. Moreover, the scene being set in a store was something I hadn't considered before. I think the developers have put in a lot of effort and I really like the art style. Hahaha, the alien creatures are also very interesting!

Nice soundtrack! I also liked the hand drawn graphics with lots of personality. Was that the Kalevala hat "väiski" on the wookie's head? :laughing:

Gameplay became hectic really fast and I think sometimes there maybe was no item that fit the bill before the buyer went away, but I might just have been mistaken about the size or something else.

Anyways, cool idea and nice mood with the radio and all.

Thank you!! So happy you liked it!

@zhangzhimu
Haha thank you also! We definitely tried to stretch the word signal into different ways! Glad you liked it!

@tomssuli
Thank you enjoying my soundtrack!

I cant speak for the Kalevala hat, but my artist no doubt might have inspired by the great and mighty Finns as they are our neighbours to the east!

The gameplay I agree could become a little bit frustrating and there's a ton of little rules with the alien races that may not have been as well described as possible - such as the snails just lying, and snakemen always wanting fair-trade and plastic - even when they say the opposite. If we had more time, maybe we'd be able to get that across better and just ban them from asking the things that their ruleset overrid anyway.

Thanks for enjoying!

@tomssuli Thanks for the feedback! The headwear is actually inspired by the helmet from a sport which I believe the Finns are well acquainted with :wink:
