Timmy's Late For Tea by Slippers

[raw]
made by Slippers for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

tlft-capsule.png

Timmy is running late for dinner. He needs to text his Mum but he needs 100% phone signal in order to do so. Timmy is also afflicted with brainrot, and therefore he is only able to navigate the world while staring down as his phone, a hand-me-down Kekia 3310.

Tips and tricks:

  • Roads are dangerous, make sure you find a safe place to cross (look for a crosswalk / zebra crossing)
  • You will need to JUMP (spacebar) up the curbs if you go into the road
  • Timmy has 30 mins (real time) of phone battery left. If runs out, it's game over. The game does not take anywhere near this long.

Assets:

  • No AI used
  • All textures and meshes were made during the jam:
  • All code was written during the jam, no boilerplate was used.
  • Most SFX was created during the jam:
    • Timmy SFX was recorded during the jam.
    • Hospital beeping and car SFX are from Freesound CC0 (opted out of audio rating).
  • Fonts are Schoolbell & Poppins

Tools:

  • Godot 4.6.1
  • Blender
  • GIMP
  • Audacity
  • ProcTile (own procgen texture tooling)

Good sound design! Funny concept. Feel like the controls could be simplified, requiring numpad use seems unnecessary. Felt like the final obstacle felt out of place and improvised compared to the other ways to die.

This game is amazing man! I just completed it but the idea of constantly looking at the phone is brilliant.

p.s. Modelling the KEKIA 3310 was time spent well :unicorn:

@nathanial I was hoping to have Timmy give a running commentary as he went and comment on various things. Including how the lava was strange and how he didn't remember Liverpool having a volcano, but time got the better of me

Thanks for playing!

@snk Haha! Glad you came back to see the final design, it was certainly quite the time sink to get it all setup. Thanks for playing and i'm really happy you had fun.

Funny and definitely on theme. The controls are a bit hard to grasp though.
Overall Good Job !

@illiteratelexicon Thank you for playing. A play tester did have quite a bit of trouble with the controls, so i've tried to plaster them in every description I can. It's definitely not the most ergonomic, and for that I apologise.

Pleased you found it funny at least! Thanks for playing and your feedback.

I thought this game was meant to be a metaphor for people who are always looking down at their phones. I even found myself wondering if I could put TikTok on the screen while playing, haha.

That Nok... ehrm sorry, Kekia model is really well made. Kinda wish i could click on the buttons too and all that! I think I got a decent score with 154 given how awkward the arrow keys are placed on my keyboard. Multiplication with shift 8 didn't work for me cause the 8 just ate the input. I was also sort of wondering if there would have been an easter egg if you input 6 + 7 or something like that

Nice little game outside the phone too.

Best Kekia out there! Mint condition! :D I've send text to mum, but I have some questions... what the hell was that behind the hospital?! And another question - why no rotators? ;) that could work so well here hehehehehe >:)

I see way too many people walking like that in real life... and sadly, not only kids!

@batisdark That Kekia is mint condition, like new. Uhm, so that was lava. I was planning on having Timmy give a running commentary about how strange it was and have the whole game be super meta - but I apparently have ZERO concept of controlling scope, so totally ran out of time and scrambled. I was actually planning little bits of dog poo / the occasional landmine to step on! But rotators would have been great, and evil :bat:.

When I eventually learn to manage scope i'll be able to actually polish a game ! Thank you for playing!

@rhookx Thank you for playing. You blew it with Cindy? Bad Timmy.

@local-minimum Thank you for recording the video , and for playtesting, and for proofreading :nerd:.

@beareye Really pleased to hear you found it funny, thank you for playing.

That was fun! The text messages were funny, sadly Cindy didn't appreciate my rizz. Started playing snakes but at some point I needed to check if I was getting closer or not so I quit with a score of 56 only :( finally managed to make it to the end, though.

Very cool game :D

I totally agree with @xiyuan—being able to overlay TikTok or other apps on the screen while playing would be such a cool feature! Also, I have to mention the screen reflection effect; the way it reacts to the lighting is absolutely gorgeous. I love that attention to detail. Great work!

I enjoyed getting "BBQ'd", and at the end from what I saw through the slats it was exactly what I thought it was. I want to complain that I'm playing an 11 year old, and I walk pasted a swing set, and I don't immediately swing on it?! Oh, wait, you said brainrot. Nevermind. My only complaint is that I never realized that the right and left arrows did something on the phone (specifically, open the games menu) until after I beat the game and saw "Snek II high score" in the score board . I probably would have gotten ran over by _even more_ cars if I was playing that while walking, though...

This is one of those ones where I love the concept in theory but in practice I found it so frustrating to not be able to look up!!! Timmy!!!! I've been too conditioned to be able to just look where I'm going in games. RIP Timmy.
