Radio Silence by PaulMag

[raw]
made by PaulMag for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

A mystery puzzle game about strange signals from outer space.

You cannot give up now. The signals you picked up almost a year ago are still being reflected off the inner walls of your skull. But all this work in these abandoned nights, and what do you have to show? There has to be some kind of reasonable explanation. They couldn't have been trying to communicate, right? You have to know.

Use your telescope and radio antenna to looks for clues in the skies.

IMPORTANT: The frequency tuner is very sensitive, but it has a margin of error. If you are unable to set it to the exact frequency it will probably still work.

Your state-of-the-art Teletype machine will print out any signal you might receive. Keep track of it all on your cork board.

How to play

Control the game with your mouse. You can play the web embedded version or download the Windows EXE file. On the itch.io version you can play fullscreen in the browser. https://paulmagnus.itch.io/radio-silence

Hints

These are spoilers. Only look at them if you get stuck and want help with progression:

1

!> Interact with the big parabolic antenna and point it to the huge white star. Tune the frequency to 832 Hz on the fancy radio, and press SCAN.

2

!> You will then get a clue about THREE blinking green stars. Look around in the sky. There are three large green blinking starts which stands out from most of the other stars. Investigate all of them with both the Telescope and Antenna.

3

!> Some of the clues you get will be relevant for later. It will all be written on the cork board, so you can reference it later.

4

!> "half the bright star’s frequency" means 832 Hz / 2 = 416 Hz

5

!> Look at the small red star next to the giant white star.

6

!> Look at the directions of the two jets (gamma rays) emitting from the collapsing star. Extrapolate their directions. They are both aiming for a star. One above and one below.

7

!> Listen to the seemingly normal planet (the star below the black hole red star) at 111 Hz to gets the new location.

8

!> Look for the yellow star between the Blue Cross (a cross shape star formation on the night sky) and the Dyson Sphere (it is located at the right of the Blue Cross and left of the Dyson Sphere). Listen to it at 111 Hz.

9

!> Listen to the green blinking planet with the frequency of 111 Hz to get her frequency.

10

!> Point the parabolic antenna at the windows of your house (the house behind you). Listen to it at 777 Hz. Then use your telescope to look at the windows.

Changelog

Great game! The hints were helpful but it was still hard to find the right stars. I liked the hints and puzzles

first hint tells me to set the frequency to 832 hz, but i couldn’t figure out if there was a way to deduce that in-game, or if i was just supposed to follow the instruction directly.

was there a clue i missed? or was the idea to point at the white star and then find the frequency by trial and error? if so, that feels like a lot of guessing.

that said, i really liked the visuals, controls, and overall mood. also the telescope felt great — almost like using a sniper scope in a FPS game, really satisfying!

I really liked the idea, and the visuals were done well, even though the audio was limited to SFX only. The telescope zoom was a fun touch, and overall interacting with objects felt nice and polished. If I had to point out one thing, the gameplay felt a little too mellow, and I think it could benefit from a bit more dynamics, even just in the character’s movement. Overall though, it’s a really solid base for a game - with a bit more polish, it could turn into something very nice.

the atmosphere in this one is really something, aiming the antenna at your own window and getting a signal back gave me actual chills. got a bit lost finding the dyson sphere near the end but the hints saved me. funny enough my jam entry has the same name lol. really cool entry, nice work!

When I looked out the window, I scared the shit out of myself!!!
Guys, this is an excellent game! I didn’t use your hints and made it all the way to the end! I missed one sticker (the one on the pile of trash with the green beam coming out of it—I couldn’t figure out how to scan it).

At first, what I saw didn’t excite me much. But damn, you made a really engaging quest!
When my friend and I were brainstorming ideas for the “signal” theme, my wife suggested a signal from space that needs to be decoded. But we couldn’t figure out how to turn that into an interesting game.

I’m really impressed!
(I wanted to attach a screenshot of the ending as proof that I finished the game, but then decided it would be a spoiler)

Now after finishing the game I checked the spoilers. I didn’t really understand how I was supposed to guess that the signal can be split into two pieces))) Maybe I just didn’t have enough English to catch some subtle hint — my level is only A2. Or was it meant that it’s broken in half, so the signal should also be split?) If so, that’s veeeeeery unintuitive.

But I don’t blame you. Making puzzles is hard, and you managed to guide me through the whole game intuitively, so that I figured everything out on my own. So one unclear spot isn’t really a problem.

I really got super into your game (this isn’t just because you played mine).

PS: in my version, the radio sensor was rotating in a kind of broken way, I was really suffering. I started thinking you were getting revenge on me for my climb up the mountain :D

Interesting idea with creative puzzles. I got stuck on the clue where I had to listen at 111 Hz since the scanner wouldn't let me select that frequency. The value of the scanner kept jumping directly from 110 Hz to 112 Hz.

@itero-proto Sorry to hear that :o Is it the browser version not working? Maybe try the EXE instead?

@half-animal-half-beast In front of the tuner there is a post-it note with "832" written on it. I can totally see how it can be missed. 🥲 Thanks for the feedback!

@skeyven Thanks for the feedback! Hmm, are you talking about “half the bright star’s frequency”? We are not talking about splitting the signal. Half of something just means dividing that number by two. Half of 10 is 5. Maybe you are overthinking it. 😅

Haha, justice served!

@silentlegion As, sorry about that. It should be possible to select 111, but it is very sensitive, yeah. There's a margin in tolerated frequencies though, so 110 Hz or 112 Hz would actually have worked. 😄

Great submission! I liked the idea and the feel of the telescope and antenna! But the radio knob doesn't work very well; it's practically impossible to even make half a turn; the frequency keeps drifting off somewhere. I got stuck on the green laser. I couldn't figure out what frequency I needed. So I had to look at the hints in the description. It would probably be cooler if they were in the game itself.

While I was writing the review, it dawned on me what the problem with the laser was, so I finished the game :D When the note mentioned monsters, it became really scary.

@aniretti Thank you! 🥰 About the radio knob, were you trying to rotate it? You're just supposed to drag the mouse up and down. 🙃
The hints should def have been inside the game, yes. 😅

@paulmag OMG, I tried rotating it too and was just suffering! :D

(But it doesn’t really matter — the game turned out too good)

The idea is so cool, but the html5 is broken, rotating too sensitive, so I didn't finish the game.

Thanks for all the feedback you guys! :) I 100% agree the frequency tuning knob is too sensitive and unintuitive. Sorry about that :P

@zj798164639 Hi, thanks for the feedback! In what way is the HTML broken? Did the game run for you? In the pause menu there is a Mouse Sensitivity slider. It helps with looking around. Not with tuning the radio though. :)

Woah!!
What an awesome entry! So hard to pull off puzzle difficulty in a jam - but you did it perfectly! I was enraptured the whole time. And the twist ending? Fantastic!

The game was the perfect length - and chock full of beautiful art and wonderful theming.
I was delighted to see you had fantastical scifi worlds to peer at (not just different colored circles, as one might expect from a jam game). Each was a beautiful little piece of story telling - how did you make so many little gorgeous planetary vignettes??

The tactile diegetic coordination of the different machines was awesome, and really evoked a sense of 'scouring the night sky with wonder'.

Also - did I notice the CMB as part of _her_? If so - very cool touch, genius.
Loved it!!

Very good presentation ! Great 3d art ! I love the mood and "story" !
Unfortunatly 416 hz is impossible for me. it jumps from 415 to 417 :/

What an amazing game! It gave me Outer Wilds vibes with all the different planets/stars, signals and mysterious messages (and the eye of course). I love the plot twist of the location of the last puzzle. The only thing I would change is digital frequency input, although I didn't have much problem with it unlike other players. 3D antenna rotation animation is much appreciated. Very well done!

@ugly-robot Thank you so much! 🥹
@MaxBluePanda has the honor for creating all of our art. 😍
Well, she's supposed to be a whole galaxy. When you say it the colors kinda resemble the CMB. I hadn't actually considered that. I think that was just a happy accident. 😅

@roroto-sic Thank you! 😍 Yeah, the frequency tuning turned out to be a bigger problem than anticipated. 😭 Were you able to complete it in the end? Most of the frequencies actually have a margin +/- 10Hz, so it's not as difficult as it seems. 🙃 We already made the tuner smoother for a post-jam release.

@gabrijel Thank you! Yes, Outer Wilds was an inspiration. 😁
Yeah, we've improved the frequency input for a post-jam release, as well as making several of the other interactions smoother and juicier. 🤤

Done! I liked it, but I didn't find it very creepy. You can try my game, it's similar to yours.
