Haberdashery Rhythm Assault by Asieke

[raw]
made by Asieke for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

Game Description

Parry and Dodge to the rhythm as you face and onslaught of attacks.

Theme Implementation

The combination of BGM and attack animations signals to the player what attacks are incoming so they can parry or dodge as appropriate with the proper timing

Inspiration - Claire Obscure's parry mechanics - Rhythm games in general

Controls

The game was built and tested primarily with Config 1 (Space and W). Additional configurations are provided to accommodate alternative control preferences.

|Config|Parry|Jump| |-|-|-| |1|Space|W| |2|Left Click|Right Click| |3|D|W| |4|Right Arrow|Up Arrow| |5|X|C| |6|JoyCon A|D-Pad Up| |7|JoyCon B|JoyStick Up|

Player Tips

  • Needles can be either parried with the sword or dodged by jumping
  • Scissors can not be parried. They can only be dodged by jumping
  • Perfect parries and perfect dodges are accomplished by waiting until the last possible moment to parry or dodge

this is so cool!! It reminds me a lot of rhythm doctor, but I really like that you have to do different things based on what's attacking you. And even though there was no info at all to start, I quickly figured out what to do. I'm impressed, you should write more about your game on here so that others will give it a try and rate it! Good work!

I truly suck in rhythm games, but this was such a fun one. Love the overall look, simple and on point. And the controls feel polished. So good!

Felt really satisfying getting the rhythm right after a while! A unique way of merging knitting, pixelart and a rhythm game, felt great and looking forward to see more!

Oh very cute ! It's like rhythm heaven, neat ! I love the flavoring of the attacks as needles and scissors

Nice! I had a score of 58%. The double scissors were tricky to follow, thank you very much for the lack of a health bar.

I did my best haha
Living again the Parry mechanic after just completing Clair Obscur was something.. Loved the vibe and it kind of reminded me of Rhythm Heaven!

Loved the art, and the way the color scheme all really works together. Parrying the needles was super satisfying -- especially when I nailed a triple. I never quite clicked with the scissors, sometimes I could feel their vibe and get it, but I was often early, and then I'd second-guess myself on the next one and be late, and then when they started doing doubles and then stacking with needles I couldn't hang. But I could imagine that IF I could hang it would have felt great.

Nice work!

This is such a cool game, amazing work! I struggled with scissors a lot, but in general the gameplay is very clear and fun, thank you so much for this experience

It was a bit tricky to avoid the scissors. But I really liked the designs.

Beautiful art! It was totally not obvious to me when the scissors would perform a series of attacks. The scissors left only 68% of me, haha.

Hey, looks like I'm top 1 in the comments for now :) Scale of a game is just right for jam in my opinion, quick and entertaining with very smart difficulty curve. Bit more complex music could be added later as an improvement and maybe some streaks like they do it int rhythm games. But it is very nice as it is.

Wow! I didn't understand at first, but then I did! And I enjoyed it. Thank you 😊

Really liked this! I made a parry game this jam too (not that I'm here shilling my game!), so respect. I really enjoyed the rhythm aspect to it, at first I was just going on visual clues and was struggling to parry much but as soon as I started listening to the audio as well it all fell into place. Love the art too!

It is a cool game! I really like the pixel art and music, it was a bit hard at the beginning, but I slowly got used to it. Good job!

The concept is quite good. "Another hornet VS SILK hum"? The music could be improved a bit. The continuous attack of the scissors seems to lack sufficient prompts.

A solid implementation—I liked it. I don’t fully understand yet how the scissors rhythm works, especially when there’s a chain of scissors and needles, so that affected my result. I think I’ll come back to it later and push it to 100.

It also seems to me that the game could be made more dynamic. Whether this would involve building up combos, where everything around starts to flare up, or a stronger audiovisual emphasis on perfect parries, I’m not sure—it needs some thought.

I love the art style! I was really bad at this game, but it was still so much fun! A great entry!

I love the art and sound effects, it was nice getting used to the rhythm and using it to parry the attacks, but I struggled a lot with the scissors, didn't understand, even with the help of the rhythm, how to avoid them when they started stacking/attacking with needles.

I was bad at this game, but had a good time and I will return to this game and try to beat my best score.

Pretty nice timing focused rhythm game! I really enjoyed replaying it multiple times just to try to get the high score, it could still use some polish, but other than that, it's pretty nice!

I'll start by saying my expectations were probably too high given the nature of the jam, but I was anticipating some form of music to help guide me along this experience. I can see it as a combination of a rhythm game plus a mechanical tutorial (I was getting Hollow Knight vibes in that regard). But I found it not as fun because I had no real way to kind of keep with the rhythm other than in my head. The pixel art is exquisite, however. Absolutely stunning job there! Thanks for the game and well done :)

Phenomenal game -- in all honesty, this is probably my favorite game so far (and there are tons of great contenders!) The aha moment of "the attacks are timed the the music" was great, the art direction was spot-on...and now you are making me want to try out Clair Obscur.

Please put an expanded version of this on steam. I'd buy it.
