Deirdre & Pedro by Frogravity

[raw]
made by Frogravity for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Deirdre the frog and Pedro the beaver have opposite dreams - to reach space and the core of the Earth respectively. With the help of the Magic Rope, however, they can work together. Control both Deirdre & Pedro, reaching deeper into the earth and deeper into the sky at the same time.

F&PGame.png

Unfortunately, many hazards plague their way. Worry not, however - from their experience, Deirdre & Pedro can unlock upgrades, increasing their survivability.

D&PUpgrades.png

Controls

  • Left/Right or A/D - move both characters left/right.
  • Escape or P - pause.
  • Down or S - once you buy the Brakes upgrade, slow down both Deirdre & Pedro for a little while.

Leaderboards

The game has an ending - a screen hastily made in 2 minutes - when you reach 150 points. However, you can continue playing afterwards to try and beat your (and other people's) highscore. Post it on the comments and I will add you to the leaderboards! Current leaderboards: 1. 318 - @ausstein 2. 304 - @frogman (me) 3. 234 - @zohar 4. 227 - @tomn114 5. 191 - @zimny11

This is the best i could get :( I'm not very good at the game. Those damn paper airplanes..

Anyway probably my favorite game yet, everything from the comical and original story, goofy art, funny sfx reminds me of an old Nintendo Game or something. The game is really polished for something that was made in 48 hours. The upgrades are a nice touch too although I'm not sure if I'm using the slow down upgrade right because it doesn't really help you once it gets really fast. Overall it's a really nice game although very challenging lol.

@rushhourz - Thank you! Glad you liked the art, I worked way too long on that.

@lakshyaisagod - Thanks!

@zohar - Thank you! Happy to see someone get the reference. I added your high-score to the leaderboards!

@tomn114 - Thank you so much for the detailed feedback! That's a very good score too, I added it to the leaderboards! I spent a very long time on polish & graphics, glad you appreciated it. The slow-down was made when all enemies were more annoying planes, where it really shined, but I do agree that it's not that useful now...

Nice game! I think you can go crazy with highscore if you try very hard, but I'm happy with mine nevertheless :)

@northerndonut - Thanks!

@sir-syko - Thank you! Sorry to hear it was too hard - this was my attempt at an easy game after previous jams - but I hope you at least had fun.

@zimny11 - Thanks! That's a pretty good score - I added it to the leaderboards!

@rhoff95 - Thank you! Glad you appreciated it! With "deeper" appearing twice in the theme, I had to make something double :)

This game has a pretty good idea, my coordination isn't great so it was pretty hard but I did eventually win! There were a few instances where I would lose 2 lives on the same object but otherwise it played very well.

Challenging game. I included it in my compilation video series of a bunch of LDJAM games!

I like the game concept. The intro was fun and art is well done. I didn't think I was doing well but then it said I won! :)

I kept thinking the hit boxes were too big but maybe I was just bad at watching both sides.

@tgb20 - Thank you! Glad to hear that you managed to win! Yes, I should've probably added invincibility frames.

@jupiter-hadley - Thanks for playing the game! Your video was pretty insightful.

@blockerz - Thank you! The winning is a bit sudden, mostly because I ran out of time... The hitboxes also could've been better - most things use simple box colliders - so it's probably not just you. Thanks for the feedback!

Cool little intro, I like the idea.
I found it difficult to see the obstacles, and figure out which things were decoration and which things would hurt me. I think giving the obstacles an outline or making them stand out more from that background would help.
I'm not sure what the upgrades are for, I won without needing them. I think it could go deeper and add some other mechanics perhaps.

Well done! It looks like you and I had the same kind of approach to the theme. You were definitely able to get more done though. Being able to implement the upgrades tied to mechanics is very impressive!

Very cool! Some of the art on the frog side I had trouble with seeing, the paper airplane especially blended right into the background. But fun concept!

@impbox - Thank you for the detailed feedback! I agree about the obstacles not standing out - I tried to incorporate a no-outline art style, but didn't think about the gameplay implications. Winning without needing any upgrades is incredible - even I couldn't do it! They are mostly there to make the game gradually easier, and change the player graphics slightly.

@john-chapman - Thank you! Wow, I just saw your game, and they are indeed very similar - great minds think alike and all that :) I will definitely play it and leave some feedback soon.

@bamallama - Thanks!

@kory - Thank you! Yes, creating a mostly white enemy in the area filled with white clouds probably wasn't my brightest idea :)

I don't think I have enough attention for this game! I think this is a well-done entry, and it shows signs of polish. I love that you had time for an intro :) The graphics were cute and to the point. I did find the music a little annoying after a while, and the threshold transitions needed a bit of work. The first few times the music changed I thought I was doing something wrong! Once you get the speed changer, there's almost no reason not to hold down all the time. I don't know if you were intending it as an emergency button, but it's more like just set the speed slower since it doesn't really have any kind of cooldown for use. In any event, a good entry!

This game is so cool! I'm impressed by the innovative concept and its execution in gameplay. I absolutely love the tongue-in-cheek art and sound style. I had a blast with it. It seems there's a bug that lets you get points even after dying (in the "game over" screen) if the surviving character collides with an obstacle. Great entry, congratulations!

@incobalt - Thank you so much for the detailed feedback! I'm glad you liked the art! I agree that the music transitions aren't that smooth... I actually felt that holding it down slows you almost unnoticeably, and using it as an emergency button was more useful (and the intended purpose). But you're right, the (almost non-existent) cooldown should’ve been longer. Thanks again for the feedback!

@pijamar - Thank you so much! Happy to hear you liked the gameplay & style! Thanks for letting me know about the bug (although you can't cheat with it at least - the points are only calculated when you die). I'll fix that.

@ausstein - Wow, thanks for playing for so long, your video was incredible! I learned a lot, especially about the importance of quality of life :) The Escape button should pause & bring up a menu (with a restart button), but I guess it doesn't work on the web version - I'll remap it to P or something. Also, I'm so glad someone managed to beat my highscore! Thank you for enduring long enough to do that! I added it to the leaderboards of course :)

Nice game! I like idea and art and music too. Also I noticed hazard prediction marks. It's small, but very important feature. Length of a game was a bit frustrating, but it may count as a feature suitable for jam. Good job!

@frogman I'm glad my Video helped. Yeah these small quality of life features go a long way, but they often fall short in LD games. Feel free to @ me when someone beats my Highscore :D

I love the game idea. It has a very cute graphics and a great idea.
It is difficult as hell to have a look on both sides at the same time but I had a lot of fun with it.

I would not differ the upgrade between the CHaracters, I suggest just to make the price *1.5 or *2 and then it works for both charaters.

Very Well done, great job.

This is a very solid entry. The concept is simple and interesting, and a nice use of the theme. It leads to very frantic gameplay that is quite nicely suited by the music.

A couple random thoughts:

It seems like the paper planes are by far the hardest obstacle to dodge, as they can appear and hit you within a very small window, giving almost no time to react. I wonder if this situation could be improved somehow to give the player a bit more control.

Ultimately, though, un-dodgeable planes are not actually a problem, as the player can simply pour more upgrades into the frog before the beaver, which is an interesting strategy that the airplanes create. Still, might be worth considering.

I also think that the umbrella upgrades should do something different from the health, just to make the system a bit more interesting. One thing I think would be neat is if umbrellas didn't slow you down when you take damage--so they would essentially be a better form of extra health. In that case their upgrade cost might need to be a little bit higher, but I think it would still be a good change.

I like that the game eventually reaches the space environment a bit after the actual winning score.

It seemed that perhaps the music is split into two slightly different pieces, one "for" the beaver and one "for" the frog, panned left and right respectively? If so, I think that's pretty neat. It makes a lot of sense to make use of stereo panning a lot in this game because it is so cleanly split down the middle.

Overall it's a pretty good game. Very strong concept for a game executed quite well.

@chenyi-jiang - Thank you!

@alexascher - Thanks! Glad you liked the hazard prediction marks!

@deathstorm - Thank you! I originally planned to add more global upgrades (like the brakes), to have a choice between upgrading only one character or both, but ran out of time...

@honey-pony - Thank you so much for the detailed feedback! I agree about the paper airplanes - I should've added a way to identify them before they arrive, like the hazard prediction marks. My original intention was that people would upgrade the side they were having more trouble with personally, but I guess making the frog side harder also works. The umbrellas were supposed to not slow you down when you took damage, but it didn't work out with Unity physics... The space environment was originally a bug, but it's a feature now :) I'm glad you liked the panning - I always add it to my musics for fun, and this time it actually made sense! Anyway, thanks again for all the feedback, and I'm happy you liked the game!

Hi! Your game is really fun to play and clever, the idea is very cool! I was a little bit afraid about the visuals in the "intro scene", but in game it works well, the music and sounds are cool! I think the knock-back when you hit an obstacle is a bit too strong, it can make you touch an other obstacle so it's a little bit like a double punition... But I really liked that the two characters have different health bars, it force you to prioritize wich one to save or sacrifice when something is undodgeable! Very cool! Good job!
