The Falling Knight V.S the Endless Pit of Dark Despair by ilPrinny

[raw]
made by ilPrinny for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

As a lone adventure you fell into the Endless Pit of Dark Despair, you can only go deeper from here.

A - D move left and right

S - advance time without moving

Q - E cycle through skills

Click the skills to select theme manually

Moving into an enemy will use the current skill on them

I have no idea how this turned out, but its a weird one. All I know is I am happy with it, and thats all that matters.

Great idea & art style, although a bit difficult to me and sometimes two enemies can overlap. Well done, especially for the compo!

Interesting mechanics, it wasn't obvious how to play at first but I got the hang of it, seems really hard to beat the game because the random spawns might just screw you over

Wooooof, this is hard! But so well-designed and has a surprisingly amount of depth (only some pun intended) for a jam game. I like the music and the sound effects a lot, and the gameplay feels very original. Really great work.

Loved it, cool art, nice music and really unique concept. This is my first gamejam and I'm blown away with what people are able to create now that I see first hand how difficult it is with the time constraint

Geez... you made this in 48 hours?!? The level of polish (graphics, sound, etc.) is quite impressive! Granted, I suck at it, but I still had fun playing. Well done!

I love the idea here - the turn-based puzzling and combat really lets you think ahead and strategize, and strategizing (and having plans actually work!) is always fun in a game. All of the movement options that you're given really help with that, since there are so many ways to manoeuvre enemies about and get them in the way of damage. I would say that it's a little difficult though - 25 enemies for level two was a steep goal to reach, especially with no (clear) way to heal, but it might just be that I'm not very good at the game :P

The art was great and I loved the hand-drawn feel of the game. The character and enemies all had some personality in their sprites too - it's only brief, but the face the player makes when attacking is great. The backgrounds were nice too, and all visually distinct, which helped make each level feel unique. Sound-wise, it was all good, and the sound effects were a good fit with the feel of the game.

I really liked this one - it's creative, fun, and has a nice charm to it. Nice work!

Wow this is amazing! Took me a while to get it at first (not too long) But yeah, this is very nice! Having to keep track of turns and how to best leverage the obstacles was fun and clever!
I cleared the game, wasnt expecting a boss, but by then I had the mechanics down. Still was a challenge.
Game looks nice, sounds good, good package surprised its a compo entry!
Very cool take!

I really liked this game. Have you played Fights in Tight Spaces? It's very similar in concept but in a few ways I actually prefer your game. The main difference is that your game is very fast paced. You can quickly decide your action and then execute on it. So it still feels "real-time" even though it's turnbased, because once you get in your groove, you're pushing and swapping things all over.

I loved that you emphasized the obstacles so much in this game. I started out using just normal attacks more, but once I got the hang of the obstacles, I was very much just weaving in and out of them and annihilating enemies.

I played all the way through and beat the game. By the time you get to the boss, you are good enough at the game's concept that he's a pushover. Overall an excellent game and one that makes you feel GOOD playing it as you do hotter and hotter combos and decisions.

The puzzle combat mechanics are really great! The art is nice as well, but the mechanics really make the game shine in my opinion. At first I didn't really get it, but after I realized how the timers for the enemies worked it felt great to play. Each skill has its situational use! The only problem maybe is that it didn't get too much harder, the difficulty didn't scale up that much.

This was a really good game! The art was really nice, and the gameplay very fun! Took a minute to figure out the mechanics, but once I got the hang of it it was really cool. The kills requirement for level two was very high so I didn't end up getting past that. Oh and the animations were excellent!

Really great game, that was a lot fun and challenging, but the only thing is, was a bit out of the theme, the only thing that was included to say "it was in the deeper and deeper theme" was the blocks that damage everyone for every 5 turns D:

And when i finished the final boss, the game has crashed: "Out of memory error"

This is great, i completed the whole game. 5/5 in fun
I think the only place the game struggles is in the tutorial/first-impressions, maybe introduce the moves one by one? in a situation where they are useful to teach the player

Quite fun! My game crashed on the Imp Den level when two enemies died and left me with -1 enemies to kill. Unfortunate that my progress was lost! Great compo submission!

I had a lot of fun with this game. I think originally I was kind of confused in part because of how original this is as a mechanic, but also a couple of little UX niggles kept me from really picking it up quickly. E.g. the damage numbers and the turn numbers being the same font and size. Another would be "pulling" a character by moving toward it (I think that's how it worked?) Beyond that, I thought this was a really well-rounded entry and kept me engaged throughout the whole experience, which is a real triumph for something made in such a short amount of time. Great job!

At first I missed the thing about timing the enemy attacks, but after that it was a really enjoyable puzzle game!
