Down the Dwarvern Hole by TheseusInABottle

[raw]
made by TheseusInABottle for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

A dungeon crawling puzzle game in which you descend deeper and deeper into a dwarven hole hopefully this place has a bottom. screenshot1.png

Fully voice acted and filled with hopefully funny jokes. The game an option menu accessible by pressing the "O" key at any time (outside of the final screen). The menu is rather barebones but it allows control over the volume of the music and the voice clips. The menu also contains a button to hear a clip on demand so you can compare it with the music.

The game also features a rather standard information panel informing you of the games controls by pressing "I" at anytime (outside of the final scene). This means there is never any reason for you to have to look back at this page other than to vote but for those of you who want to know the controls before hand I will have them listed bellow.

  • W, A, S, & D to move your character in one of the four cardinal directions (sorry French, German, and Russians rebindable controls was on my todo list but time got the better of me)
  • I to open the Information Panel
  • O to Open the Menus

This game is entirely controlled with the keyboard with the exception of the sliders in the options menu which are adjusted with the mouse.

This game is avalible for WINDOWS, MAC, and LINUX. I'm not smart enough to figure out how to make the MAC version not give the error it awlays does but here is a link to a post for MAC users on how to fix this bug. I might fix this later after I am not sleep deprived from 48 hours of jamming so be sure to come back and check for an update later

Also as always I tried my best to have a bug free game but I am sure you will find some be sure to tell me about them so I know for next time

Thanks for playing and reading!

I really, really enjoyed this. The music did eventually start to get ... repetitive? Really loved the puzzles. I didn't see a "Reset Level" and on some I could just run into a Slime until I died, but I think a "Retry" button would be good. (Maybe I just missed it).
Loved the puzzles, I could see playing this one a lot. Thanks for making it!

Put me in an excellent mood as soon as I heard the music.

Very amusing sound effects and music, along with good graphics makes this quite charming.

The voice acting was amazing, so funny. For a silly game the puzzle aspect was surprisingly fun and challenging.

The audio was hilarious, definitely the thing that kept me playing. It would've been nice if you were able to hold multiple swords instead of every sword you went over disappear though.

Easy contender for most humorous game. I got stuck in the second-to-last level and couldn't find a way to restart, but thanks to the "skip level" option, I was able to see the ending.

This worked really well, and the sound effects and music were great. I found myself wishing I could just leave swords on the ground whenever I walked over them when I already had a sword, but I suppose that's what makes this a puzzle game. Maybe instead of a sword it could have been a spell or something that you pick up, like an aura that surrounds you? At least then I wouldn't have to yell at the little guy to leave the swords alone! But this was really great, nice job!

an incredible experience. favorite Zingers: "this thing looks like it was made in 48 hours!" "i'm not dying, i'm just... resting." some of the puzzles are actually a lot more challenging than i anticipated. or it might just be that i'm bad at puzzle games. anyway, impressive entry.

Made me smile from first seconds! However, I wish the were more voicelines and they didn't overlap. Also, puzzle mechanics actually work! I think making a working puzzle game is a game design achivement

@theseusinabottle lovely game, great aesthetics.

Things I would change:
-Make swords stackable as you don't have to backtrack that much
-Make the music loop longer to not cause an aneurysm to the players lol

Love the voice lines getting interrupted to make weird impromptu sentences.

You've really done a lot here in a short time, and I like the fact that you did the voice acting with some good humour. I ran into one problem where I couldn't finish a level, and couldn't self destruct on enemies, so I was stuck with no way to restart the level.

I can't play it on itch. The JavaScript console says, "[UnityCache] indexedDB database could not be opened"

The moment I heard the music I knew I was in for a treat. It got a _bit_ repetitive, but it was still fun, and the voice acting was great too. The only annoying bit was the fact that you could only hold one sword. Even knowing this, I picked up an extra more than once, and then got stuck for a bit before I realized what I had done. Some kind of sound effect to let you know you did that might have helped.

Nice little puzzle game! Love the art style and the voice acting! Wish the puzzles are more difficult, and that you can pick up multiple swords at once rather than wasting time to pick up and use them one by one

Fantastic! It might have been nice to include a quick restart button for when you grab the swords out of order. Very funny, short and sweet!

Interesting game. I enjoy these types of walk 2d puzzle games. You did a good job introducing the mechanics slowly, so that the player would learn how to play as they played instead of needing an explicit tutorial.

I physically laughed out loud at the things the main character said! xD Very nice humour overlaid on top of some simple but pleasant puzzles.

PS, I got soft-locked in the second last level so I had to skip it :(

Fun puzzle 2D game and sounds really do add to it. Only problem I had was the back and fourth in the third stage to get three swords seemed a bit repetitive. Great and fun work though!

I saw your posts this saturday, and I actually impressed how your game turned out to be :D Nice art, funny voice acting. Only problem I had was going in loops for the 3 keys in third level

Don't let silly looks and audio distract you from the fact that this is pretty good puzzler! Everything is just fits here, from funny lines every time you jump to exit hole or take keys to cool 3d models and sprites! Well done!

The graphics were adorable!! The dialogue lines were very fun but they did play a bit too often and would cut in on the previous one. Gameplay was also very fun :D

I really loved the graphics! The puzzles were good. The only I would have preferred is perhaps a slightly faster movement to speed up the gameplay. The voice acting was funny but the "soundtrack" can become annoying. That's the only downside. Other than that, great work!

Very cute character art. The music reminds me of a certain character/unlockable secret from Hollow Knight.
A quick reset button would have been great coz I ended up soft locking myself on a some levels a few times, where I didn't have keys, and all the slimes were behind doors so I couldn't die. Luckily I realized you can just skip levels from the options menu so I did manage to reset.

Amazing music and voice acting, though it got old pretty quick (Was funny while it lasted though). I really enjoy the gameplay, the puzzles are well put together. Best thing I can say about any project, I want more of it!

That was a hilarious game man! "Is that a key for my heart?? - keys everywhere!" Very funny and enjoyable, truly loved it.. i could write a whole paragraph on your voice acting. just brilliant 6 stars from me! The graphics are cool & cute too. Gameplaywise i would like a bit more speed on the character movement especially needed when you have to go back and forth for the second/third sword! And on top of all that now i saw its a compo! Congratulations, kudos, well done, you rock! Great work.. these 2 days were very well spend :)

What a funny game!
This song is the best in the game! Congratulations to the "singer".
The narration gave a special touch of humor that I have not yet seen in this Ludum.
The puzzles, although easy, were well thought out. This has the potential to become something much bigger.

Congratulations!

Hilarious audio  Its a great puzzle game. I wished you could hold multiple swords though because I feel like it only requires more walking but does not add any difficulty

Omg the humor in this one is amazing! This is the best humor I've played this LD, and the voice over just makes it better. The puzzle game itself is good as well, I think you can expand it. Good job especially for a compo!
