Spread Your Roots by Scott Cooper

[raw]
made by Scott Cooper for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

A game where the goal is to spread your roots deeper and deeper, collect nutrients, and eventually grow your tree! This game is in rough shape due to us not being able to devote as much time as we would have liked this weekend, and not having any artist friends, but we think the potential is there! The terrain and tree at the end of the game are procedurally generated and will be different every time.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Scoring too high in this game will cause the game to lock up due to the complexity in generating the tree. So try not to be too good... and keep your score under 40 if you want to see your tree! Be a bit patient it might take up to 30 seconds to generate (or longder if you scored really high). We are working on a fix for this, however we are very busy and the fix will require a good amount of optimizations.

GAMEPLAY: Grow your root system down and collect 'nutrients' (the dotted dirt tiles) to grow your tree! Your water gauge determines how far you can expand your root system, collecting water tiles will increase your water bar allowing you to continue going deeper and deeper.

CONTROLS:

Use W and S to pan the camera up and down. LMB to click on nearby tiles to expand your root system.

Great game! I liked it, but I can't scroll up to see my tree.

Sorry to hear that! I am guessing that you got so many points that the game actually 'froze' because it takes forever to build the tree as it's not as optimized as it should be. So try getting a lower score... lol.

Hey uhm, something seems wrong with the viewport, you could try checking the 'enable fullscreen' option on itch or just running it directly in full screen! I'd really like to try it :3

I like the concept! Can definitely see the potential. I also may have made my first tree too big as well, lol

Awesome idea for a game! I liked how you incorporated the genre of the game jam to create something original. Panning the camera up at the end was a nice touch to see your progress instead of just having a scorecard, although the game did freeze after going for too long.

Simple but cool concept. My tree turned out quite massive and took a while to load, but it did eventually let me scroll up. Could have used some sound and improved graphics, but good job overall.

Luckily I was quite bad at the game, so I was able to see the tree! That's a really cool way to visualize the score.

Really cool idea, could certainly use some secondary objectives to keep it more interesting. Also, I wasn't able to scroll at the end

lol "Try not to be too good" that could be the main mechanic of the game! Very nice programmer art!

Cool game idea! I liked the mini map the most. Maybe you can tweak on water remaining and water placements a bit, to make it more interesting.

Cool idea, though I haven't see my tree in the end. :joy:

Really neat concept and I love the idea of the tree generating at the end. Struggled to get more water but that just meant the game was short but sweet and I can't imagine how large the tree would have been if I had given it was so big already!

The art was cute but would have been nice if the roots going sideways had linked up. Had a little panic when I did the first side one that I was doing it wrong! Other than that, I like the art and don't think you need any "artist friends" :P

Possibly adding the ability to scroll using the scroll wheel would have been nice especially at the end when it takes a little while to pan up but that's a very minor suggestion!

Overall, super nice entry! Well done!
