Silesia Simulator by Kosmik123

[raw]
made by Kosmik123 for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Explore the depths of the polluted and haunted city.

My very first idea was to make a game about a person who lost their memory (maybe even mind). During exploration of the city he would discover depths of his dark memories. Unfortunately I couldn't come up with a fine story, so I changed my conception of the game. That's why it became "collect diamonds, escape zombies" type of game.

Walking streets of Silesia almost feels like home to me: lots of Plattenbau (or whatever panel houses called in English), gray sadness everywhere you look, and some drunk freak waiting for you around every corner...

Jokes aside, I love the atmosphere of the game - the smudged textures and the fog effect really help to feel the sadness of bleak neighborhoods.

And the soundtrack amplifies this atmosphere by a 100. It reminded me of a Pharmakon a little bit.

Sad that you have abandoned your original idea. As a person who struggles with game-narrative every time, I get that feeling, when you think that the story is just not good enough or maybe seems too incoherent. But I think in the and you should just power through and make SOME story, even if it would be stupid or naive  Most of the time other people would look at your work less critical than yourself and like it more than you think

I reached 150 diamonds before killing myself, the balancing probably makes the game a bit too easy. In any case I think the atmosphere of the city is really good.
Too bad you couldn't go through with your idea, I agree with @annie-owl's comment :)

Even if you abandoned your original idea, it ended up being enjoyable!

Really like the almost like "Silent Hill"/horror vibe. The music is straight to the point. Of course the game might look easy at first, but it's not fun and games anymore when you get followed by an army of "gopniks" :D

Sometimes it got even funny, when there are some souls lost behind a corner, waiting for you...

If you continue working on it, maybe tweak a bit the camera movement, I had to move the mouse 2-3 times to turn, and maybe add a minimap, some end level goal (find a door, collect x amount of diamonds), maybe add ladders, balconies. For some additional change, you could make the overall lighting weaker, and add some light poles on the streets.
