Debts and Pandamonium by Cyzaine

[raw]
made by Cyzaine for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

cover_image.jpg From the minds behind the Kobolds of OSHA:

You are the mighty Panda, brought low by crushing debts. In this Roaring 20s-esque world of anthropomorphic animals, you take to a life of crime to try and extract yourself from a sea of red ink. Gamble on going further into debt to equip yourself properly for missions assigned by the Boss, but every second counts - the longer you play, the more you owe!

This top-down RPG-lite menu battler is a quick play and appropriate for ages 13+. Navigate the mean streets, complete missions, talk to townsfolk, and learn that crime truly does not pay...enough to get you out of debt!

HOW TO PLAY When the day starts you are given a mission; listen to the Boss to get the objective for the day. Use WASD to move around, and Q to interact with NPCs (or other interactable objects). Your mouse will interact with the buttons in the interface using left-clicks.

Use the Fixer, Nom Took, to buy any items you think you'll need to complete your mission. Then start interacting with people and objects until you have found and completed the mission!

After you complete your mission OR run out of time, a new day starts, your inventory is cleared, and you get a new mission. You have three days to get as far out of debt as you can!

  • Game was coded in the Godot engine, using GDScript
  • Characters, splash screens, music, and icons are all original media made during the 72 hour jam!

I enjoyed this. The art was fantastic, sfx were solid, and overall I liked the concept. I'd like to see what you can do with more time. Incidentally, what was this programmed in?

@kylethecoder We coded this in Godot, using their python like GDScript. I've been coding in it for 1 year now, though our other 2 coders were much newer.

Love the theme! Some bugs here and there, but would love to see what your team could have done with more time. Solid!

I couldn't start the web build, but the Windows version worked. Although it crashed on first time clicking "Play Game". I like the idea of the game and what people were saying "I feel like I'm a fictional character." The panda looks awesome :D
But where is the boss?

@helen Thanks for the bug reports and I'm grateful that you persevered and played. Do you recall which browser you tried it in where it wouldn't work? This was the biggest game we've ever publicly shared, and weren't ready for all the performance issues we ended up running in to! Definitely something to work on before next time.

I also couldn't get the web version to load (on Chrome). The Windows build was fine, though.

I liked the concept and mood a lot, nice job overall.

I was not really sure what I was supposed to do. I enjoyed the art and voice over. A mission dropdown would have made all the difference.

@dk5000p Ya... we tried to put in a 'mission indicator' arrow, but was cut last minute and the game definitely suffers for it.

I really liked the theme and world the game builds up. It was interesting walking around talking to npcs and killing cops by throwing knives at them. I couldnt find any of the mission people I was supposed to find.

I liked the overall idea and take on the theme, very clever. It was a pleasant surprise to hear voice acting when I started the game. The character designs were well made, I liked the details in them. I think it's impressive that you created a system like that in such a short time: quests, patrolling cops and even a combat system. I believe with a little polish here and there, this can be a complete experience. Just one idea: put a quest indicator on the screen, as I tried, but could not find any objectives.

Great entry, it shows your hard work. Congratulations   :moneybag:

I really liked the concept of the game but had quite the hard time getting far in it. I must've played at least 10 rounds but could only beat the mailbox mission lol.

I went in blind and figured I just needed to rough people up with my fists. Only after I scrolled down and read the instructions did I realize you needed to go into debt. From there I just kept buying laser swords and smacking people with them. Probably overkill and not cost efficient, but I was more focused on beating the missions before optimizing.

I eventually got used to hunting down the PI and the layout of the map, that took me several tries to learn along with the combat system. It is quite scary to accidentally run into a cop. I know that's intentional so I have no beef with it, but I was terrified of running into the same cop multiple times since it drains your time so much.

In my best run I beat the mailbox mission but then got hit with a debt gameover. I'm not sure how to make more money than what I did, even if I did buy cheaper weapons.

I still enjoyed the game in the end. The intro got me into the right mindset of a hired gun. The game reminded me of classic GTAs, including the little alleys you can run through. Although there wasn't too much to the city, little things like that made exploration enjoyable. Good job!

Great art, instructions a bit confusing as the voiceover volume was a bit low. Setting made me think of Blacksad, and any day I think of Blacksad is a good day, so thanks for that!

Nice unusual concept and pretty graphics to support it. I liked the unusual gameplay. Also, it's refreshing to see something not made on Unity this days)

@mrpouletbzh ya... It's hard knowing this obvious pain point and not being able to change it for this competition. An important lesson for next Jam.

@cyzaine I think that the point of the jam is actually to do this kind of mistake to learn from them, and you still can be proud of what your team achieved to do, especially for your first participation in the LD!

As others have said, I *love* the art style—the characters are weird and incredibly charming. I also had no idea what to do: I could never find anyone or anything to interact with that wasn’t an NPC with regular dialogue (all of which was well written, though) or a cop to fight. Some kind of… objective marker? or even a tutorial mission that held your hand a bit more would have helped. The premise is sound, though—with a little more time this could be a lot of fun!

Very original idea ! Characters art is cool. This game has a nice atmosphere.

There is some issue with characters superposition. The goal is not very obvious, maybe add a tutorial.

The cover is very nice and attractive !

Good job.

A very original and enjoyable game, although finding the right people for missions was a bit difficult at the start, especially given the time limit.

I love games based on the roaring twenties and yours certainly did not disappoint.

Despite the bugs, the game has awesome presentation, art, and mood. Gameplay is also good.I enjoyed my 2 playthroughs very much.

As a point to improve, I would suggest to duplicate the quest tasks with text as well, since it is not always clear where to go.

I had fun just running around town talking to people. I was trying to avoid debt and didn't buy anything from that first guy, which led me not to be able to beat the PI. But as soon as I saw I was losing the debt shark ate me. :P I enjoyed the mood alot! Thanks for the game!

Cool take on the theme, and I loved the general feel of the game. It was a little hard to navigate some of the menus (i.e., the battles), and I had some difficulty making progress. Was fun talking to all the characters!

Cool game! I would have never thought about something like this for the theme, very original!

I decided to take a look at the city and talking with the different NPCs when all of a sudden I was attacked by a black box!

Looks, cool! Really funny item names and I like the concept of getting into debt for them. I also had the black squares in that same instance and also ![Pandaboy snip bug2.PNG](///raw/ace/21/z/42523.png)

It might be an issue with your image import settings or compression settings for html? Just guessing. Also the HTML performance was kind of laggy so some image optimization wouldn't hurt. Very cool and a great start!

I liked the music and the voiceover! And art on the characters is very nice as well. All of it has this 40s mafia movie vibe to it.
Listening to all the npcs is cool and definitely adds to the atmosphere. I would decrease the size of the font there, as those are some huuuuge letters ;).

Fighting feels rather to slow - could be snappier. And I found it quite strange that stuff like guns was just one-time use, could not even keep using them through one fight. Felt a bit like a forced mechanic and not a natural thing in the game world. If the gun was discarded after a fight, that would be totally understandable within the mafia setting, but after one shot feels just strange.

Points for using Godot as well :)

Here are some notes I took while playing:
- The menu music is kinda bad... and sounds are too loud. In-game music is pretty nice.
- Voice acting! Cool!
- E to interact would have felt better
- Character portraits show all their heads instead of just one, and the in-fight gun sprites have black backgrounds
- What is the bar below the life bar in the fights supposed to be?
- I talked to everyone I found and still have zero clue what I'm supposed to do...

So maybe I just didn't get how to play, but I had no idea what the mission was ever, what killing the dogs was for, what purpose talking to people serves, I feel totally lost playing. These other comments confuse me, is the downloadable version of the game up to date? It was the one I played.
