Depths of the Library by Klaus Peter

[raw]
made by Klaus Peter for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Your grandpa asks you for a favor. He needs an important book from the library. Being the responsible person you are, you naturally want to help you grandpa. But that is easier said than done!

The library is an ancient building and the book in question is in one of the lowest floors.
The only way down is a rickity elevator and during the ride you have to avoid getting hit by debris!

Do you have what it takes to beat this challenge?

Lovel the pixel art and the animations! I found the game a bit tricky though so I didn't manage to finish it. Still had fun though!

The game looks gorgeous. The idea is fun. Although controls feel a bit too fluid, the game is very entertaining.

Uh oh! It doesn't work for me in Firefox. It just loaded in Edge, though so I'll give that a try.

Fun game, really enjoyed the visuals, sometimes the spiders go all the way down and I'm unable to kill them taking a hit when this happens, that apart great job!

Fun game, in game controls would've been nice I didn't realize they were in the description when I look through.

Fun little gameplay! Maybe sometimes the difficulty seems a little bit unfair but that's fine by me! The graphics are nice, the audio is nice, it's just a neat little game!

Thanks for the kind reviews!

It was the first for us to work together in a jam and the first for me time to create music and sound effects. So I really appreciate the positive feedback!

Good game, graphics are nice !
A jump animation could have been added, but otherwise nothing to say.
Well done !

The graphics are pretty good, and the sounds fit perfectly with the mood.

However, the game was way too difficult. I think it needs a fair bit of balancing work, which I understand is hard to achieve in a game jam, so it's not something really important.

Good job!

Really nice art style. The game is extremely difficult, but I like the controls, so making it a bit easier would be a huge improvement.

Fun game! Finished at 1 heart after something like 10 or 15 tries :) Funny ending as well.

Difficulty is fine as I died most of the time at around 75%, thanks to the progress indicator in the corner. So I knew I could win (otherwise I would have probably bailed).

You should probably include the controls in the game intro (and/or during gameplay). At first I missed the fact that you could left click to hit the spiders, which made the game way more difficult than it needed to be (but that's on me).

By the way, it doesn't work with adblockers because of a file named `hitbox.js` which is blocked. I think renaming the file should be enough to make it work.

Also, why can't I rate you on mood, graphics, etc?

@antbrl thx for the feedback! It’s nice to hear that it is playable after I tweaked the monsters a bit.

And yeah, that with the rating categories was a mistake. It was quite late when I submitted and I must have accidentally opted out of everything :(
I tried to contact Mike already. I hope it can still be fixed

There are some great elements here, but the games a bit short and it feels like it's compensating by being really hard haha. Kinda like the old time games

It is really fun to play. The audio feedback of obstacles gives players to reposition their characters. The game is pretty hard but it adds good flavor to the game. The only feedback I can give that when I kill a spider I want a different indicator than camera shake. When fighting is intense, I can not differ if I get hit or a spider is dead. Overall very good game, congratz!

Great game! Love the concept and how you made good use of the assets to create an infinite falling background, it looks slightly abstract but gets the point across quite efficiently!

This is a nice game with a short story. The improvements I would suggest is to make the music loop longer, 'cause as it is it's too short. Another thing is that the game already begins very challenging, with lots of enemies coming on your way, there's no slow pace to get used to the controllers and movement. But overall it's a nice entry, I liked it!

the artwork was nice and i think you have the start of a good game. the attack controls were a little weird and i could not figure out how to attack but it worked sometimes. this has some potential. thanks for making it.

I managed to finish it quite quickly. It just needs a few balance changes like others have mentioned and death animation/sound for the spider.
Other than that it's a nice short game.

Edit: Also, consider adding a key for attack as well as using the mouse.

Graphics were very cute, and I felt instantly attached to the main character, and even his grandpa. The controls are very tight, and I never felt like I got hit when I shouldn't have. The length of the game is the perfect size for a jam game because the whole thing is playable in just a few minutes. The game showcases everything it has to offer in that timeframe, and you're not left wondering if there's more. That being said, there isn't too much to experience as whole. Another dynamic would be require to make game feel "whole". Perhaps you bring up the wrong book, or your grandpa requires a different book, every time you bring one up, to make the story repeatable, and thereby creating a gameplay loop. This way, each book could be at a lower and lower level, and once the player loses all of their hearts, they have to start over. Or perhaps, once you retrieve the book that our grandpa is looking for, you have to also traverse the same elevator trip back upwards. And because we're now moving upwards, the challenges become that much harder because things will begin falling down quicker.

From a design standpoint, I felt that attacking was a single-use mechanic, and could have been used for more. For example hitting books and globes out of the way. Another idea would be to have books actually pile up as they fall, requiring the player to hit them away off the platform. This would add another mechanic of difficulty. Perhaps built up books tilt the platform in a way that requires the player to clear them, lest the platform flip, or something.

Overall I think it was a fun little jam game!

I like the art, but omg how confusing is to jump with the top arrow instead of space  however, this is a great entry, good job

I liked your game, managed to pass on the idea, I believe there is a jewel that should be polished so that its real brilliance appears, both in terms of player controls, as well as in the balance of difficulty, that you will have in future upgrades, following the observations from who is playing here at Ludum, you took a very important step so continue, study and evolve and soon began to reap good results from your project, if you can give feedback on my game I will be grateful, a big hug.

Nice graphics - I liked the pixel art and parallax backgrounds... Gameplay is simple but effective. I think it could have done with a bit of polish - specifically a death animation for the spiders and indeed a death sequence for the player too... restarting instantly is a little jarring. I also thought it was a little too easy, primarily because you can destroy the projectiles coming from spiders, so there's not really any jeapordy from them as enemies.
Nice little game though. I liked the difficulty ramp up toward the end with the falling objects too.

Yeah, I just finished this game! Really great idea and nice pixel arts! Maybe it will be cool to play if player can cast magic spell to destroy enemies or immobilize the obstacles. Nice works!
