NOW WITH A WEB BUILD! SAME LINK AS THE WINDOWS DOWNLOAD

Get Rich Or Dive Trying is a casual treasure hunting adventure game build for the Ludum Dare 48 Game Jam.

Take to the seas as Gailbrush Deepwood as she loots sunken wrecks before high tailing it back to the docks to sell her hard won booty! If she can raise 10,000 gold, she can retire in peace!

Simply head out to sea to find sunken wrecks.

Click "Begin Dive" when over a sunken wreck to search for loot (but be patient, the treasure can be hard to find).

Recruit Crew and First Mates at the dock to speed up your progress and reduce the amount of damage you take while sailing.

Controls

WASD to move the ship.

Mouse to click the buttons.

Press ESCAPE in the game screen to quickly exit the game.

HAVE FUN!

Credits

HumanWritesCode did the programming.

Lenny Rudeberg did the music and a bunch of art.

Tegan (not sure if she wants her last name on here) did the art assets.

NOTE:

There is only a Windows build for now but I'll make a web build very soon. Right now, I'm too tired.

Love the name! Will play it later after I get a VM set-up for binaries; but I couldn't wait comment on the name!

@bw-devel Cheers. I'll put a web build when I wake up tomorrow if you'd rather wait for that.

A lot of fun, the controls were a little janky and hard to get used to in my opinion, but otherwise great! Don't know how well it implements the theme though.

Great name! I like the control scheme, it feels fairly unique and 'boat-like', and I love the overall presentation.

Nice pixel arts and great music, and quite addictive too! Maybe it will be more fun to play if can use mouse to point and click the destination. Well done!

I liked the management type gameplay and the music was good! The boat animation was super nice. If you study pixel art more you can really take the graphics to a next level.

Fun concept, I would enjoy playing an expanded version.

Really loved the graphics and movement.
The story also adds to the experience (although it's a bit generic :D )

Good game, nice job mate!

This game is so cool. The graphics, the animations are amazing, the gameplay is great. The only flaw is the camera (for me) the boat goes faster than the cam and so you can't see the islands. But it's a really good game.

Really love the Monkey Island references and art! Would want some better camera, though - it's always floating behind the boat and I'm running into coasts. Good thing it doesn't damage the boat :D

@patsu Thanks for playing. We are probably going to keep developing this one. It'll require a full rebuild and we're hoping to incorporate feedback from the players here.

Nice! I even found an iPhone in a wreck :D
I had a hard time to get used to the controls - but no one learned to sail the legendary Gailbrush Deepwwod in a minute!

There seems to be a small bug in the WebGL build - if you restart the game after loosing I was unable to move the ship

@fabighindaru People seem a bit divided on the control system. Don't tell anyone, but we were divided on it, too  Thanks for the feedback!

@atosgame Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the cam could probably be a bit more zoomed out in retrospect.

Very good looking and polished game. The themesong is very fitting as well.
My only recommendations:
- The controls could be relative to the boat instead of the world.
- Some more sound effects for diving or docking would make it even better :)

Thanks for the WebGL build. Very fitting music and seagulls, I got stuck on a no wreck here, could not end dive or move.. Escape did end the game though. Nice art and overall it's a solid submission, well done!

@patomkin We didn't want the camera to totally fix the boat in the centre of the screen because you lost the "drifty" sense of sailing. We definitely could have made the "free sail" area in the centre of the cam a bit smaller though so it started moving when you were further from the edge of the screen. Thanks for playing!

Well I managed to get rich. And not die trying. I loved the atmosphere here, the music & sounds really brought this game together! The game movement was a little janky. Graphics were pretty as well.

I loved it ! Loved the art, the music is great (even though you could add some sound effects when diving or setting sail), the gameplay is simple, great job !

Cool game ! I took the time to finish it :) The controls are a bit hard to grasp and I think using relative direction would have been better with this camera angle. I had some bugs also, with my ship teleporting around when I hit walls (maybe it’s intended ?). Thank you for the game !

That was a really great experience. And I'm a sucker for punny titles! I love the pixel style of it! The pixel art of the boat especially is really cute. Though the boat rotating as a single sprite causing the pixels to rotate too bothers me a bit ^^;

One problem at the moment I feel is that it's not very balanced as you very quickly surpass any challenge of the game once you get a few damage reductions and such. That, and the kinda' wonky controls in my opinion, but that kinda' adds to the experience. It would've been cool if it got a bit harder or there was some more balancing as you progressed; or even something simple like damage reduction making repairs cost more.

That said, honestly, I really enjoyed my time with it. It was enjoyable just boating around a few times, collecting some treasure, selling it, and hiring a few people. It still had me playing the whole way through :)

Also, is the music based on *The Wellerman* or am I crazy? xD

AN INTERESTING AND UNIQUE CONCEPT. ART IS FANTASTIC; MUSIC IS GREAT.
CONTROLS ARE CONFUSING. I BELIEVE COMMENTER 'Yword' IS CORRECT IN THAT THE SHIP SHOULD BE NAVIGATED WITH THE MOUSE.
I LIKE THE DICTIONARY OF WORDS FOR TREASURE AND RECRUITABLE SAILORS. IS IS IMMERSIVE.
THE GAME SHOW PROMISE AS A MANAGEMENT SIMULATOR, HOWEVER THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TO MANAGE. PERHAPS ADD MORE THINGS TO MICROMANAGE THAT CAN BE DONE WHILE YOUR CREW IS DIVING FOR TREASURE.
I DISAGREE WITH COMMENTER 'FabiGhindaru' - THE STORY IS NOT GENERIC BUT TIMELESS. THE GREED OF BANKERS IS ETERNAL AND IT DOES WELL TO REMIND THE PLAYER THAT WEALTH SHOULD NOT BE MARKED BY NUMBERS IN A LEDGER, BUT BY GOLD AND SHINY TRINKETS, PREFERABLY BURIED, OR IN SOME KIND OF HOARD.

I retired! Really cool game, very soothing. Nice graphics and sound effects. The ship's controls were a bit clunky at first, but then I got a grip for it and actually liked it. The momentum of the ship was good idea.

@goblinkingmatt Thanks for all the feedback. The controls will definitely be revised when we start working on the game again. We have a few ideas for improving them. I think you are right in suggesting that we expand the management aspects of the game - there is a LOT we could do with that concept. Thanks for playing!

@sigmath-bits Yep you are 100% right about balance. Unfortunately, it came together too late to do much play testing and balancing. We chose to focus on bug squashing rather than balancing with the limited playtesting time that we had. When we work on this game further, we'll probably change a lot about it and the current balancing issues will transform into new, different balancing issues  Thanks for playing!

@redspine Quite a few people have mentioned the controls (and we agree). The idea of controls relative to the ship orientation is a good one and I think we'll probably try that out first when we make changes. Thanks for the feedback!

Great game, I really love the boat sprites reminds me of the look of the pirate games I always wanted as a kid in computer game magazines in the early nineties but never got hold of. I'm a bit split on the controls as well, I like it being keyboard rather than mouse and appreciate the controls are meant to be part of the challenge, it's just that all the games you've played in the past confuse you into think the relative to the boat controls should work, although I think they could and still retain the challenge with the right balance. The music and graphics really set the mood well and I liked all the humorous treasure descriptions. I had an issue with the web build where the controls wouldn't work after I got a game over and had another attempt. So I had to refresh browser each time I restarted. Very chill, relaxing game. Good job and all the best for your continued efforts developing it.

@flipsy Thanks for the detailed feedback! I'll have a look into the issue with the web build - that's sure to frustrate players. I'm glad you found it chill (we wanted a pretty casual experience) and we completely agree about the controls.

@patsui Thanks! This is the first time I've ever made anything in the pixel art style, I really enjoyed designing the game in this style and would be keen to do some more in the future.

Nice polished game, the graphics are great and the music is fitting. I expected the ship to use tank controls when I started the game and it took a bit for me to understand that the ship accelerates with some delay in the direction I'm pressing. After that the gameplay was smooth and I got some treasures, repaired my ship and lived my happy treasure hunter life until I became too greedy and failed horribly.

monkey island reference is appericated, boat controls are really really slippery but other then that it's pretty good.

nice game! i liked exploring around the different islands and found some interesting treasures like the first mates ear scratching pencil. :D
in my opinion the damage dealt could have been a little bit more for the game to be a little more challanging. it was relaxing which is also good but i didn't need to play very strategic.
one last thing: the refresh option when recruiting was a little useless as you could click on "back" and "recruit" again and it would refresh for free.

Great game! The graphics and audio were great. The game was fun, and there is some strategy in deciding to go further or not, though the damage isn't that high so it is not too hard. Nice relaxing game.
Loved the name as well, and the treasures were great.
