Vile Things by JakobTheQuizGuy

VileThingsScreen.PNG

The Vile Things are coming for your world, and it's up to you to wield your blade of light to defend it. Defeat waves of enemies until there are none left!

Another Ludum Dare done! This time was great fun as well. It seems that for every Ludum Dare I make progress in all aspects except for time management  I couldn't fit the theme in in the way I wanted to, but I suppose you could see the multiple waves of enemies as a way of going "deeper"... Have fun playing!

Cool game! I liked the art, movement handling and the progression of enemies and patterns. Good level of polish, well done!

Great game! Played about four runs of it! Love the art style, the sound design, and the music really keeps me engaged! I would like to have a "demon killed counter" at the top of the screen. I couldn't get further than the black floating enemy, but I guess the game is an arcade one right? Arcade games always need scores on the screen to keep the player engaged and always hunting for a better score, other than that, really really good game! 9/10

@alexhall thank you very much!

@caue-henrique thank you, I'm flattered! This actually isn't an arcade game, there are set waves of enemies and you win once you defeat them all.

I like the art - very well done. The creatures are creative designs too. Nice job making a cool game in a weekend!

Nice variety of enemies!

Played a decent amount.. After a few games learning the ropes, I dug in and made it to a megawave of flying biters that did me in, and didn't have the heart to restart.

I liked the controls, although I never got super-fluid with them. On the plus side the character is responsive, has a good non-floaty jump feel, solid air control, and the attack range is nice with a super-clear graphic. The whole playing-lefty thing (arrows + attack w/ left hand) is tough, I'm used to wasd, so maybe that's why I never felt super in the zone. A very interesting element was the directional aiming of the attack. It was essential to the game.

A very nice design choice was the amount of knockback, which made me have to chase enemies down and think about movement, as opposed to just being a run-up-and-spam.

This was a good all around package, with compelling art, solid sound, and a nice music that accompanied the "vile monsters" theme well. Nice work!

Real question : how many frames on these animations ? They look incredible ! The sprites themselves are really cool too. Gameplay reminded me of Hollow Knight, though it was a bit on the easier side.

Pretty polished submission, good job !

@blockerz @axeltherabbit thank you, I appreciate it!

@pkenney wow, thank you for the detailed feedback! If I keep working on the game I'll be sure to add customizable controls.

@whismirk thanks! Yes, Hollow Knight was the inspiration for the attack, I think it works great in that game so I gave it a shot myself. The animations basically have as many frames as your computer can handle, all the creature sprites are split up in multiple parts, and to animate them I move, scale and rotate them smoothly. It's very simple actually, not sure if you use Unity but if you do you can try it out!

Awesome animations for every enemy and especially main character. At some time a thought that thegame is too easy but then I was surprised that it kept going. It was kind of gotcha moment when the game througs 6 jaws at you at the same time. I really liked slash effect, it reminded me of hollow knight. Adaptive soundtrack! Oh, boy. Great entry

@ariorick thank you very much! Yep, it's made the same way the Hollow Knight slash is. And you're right, I'll get to playing some more games and giving more feedback!

Oh my... those are super trippy aliens. Especially the dark ones that spawn all that purple stuff. Love the graphics, very creative! Lasted until I got attacked by a whole bunch of the alligator-jaws-in-a-head things....

Extraordinary animations! I love that walking cycle. Very impactful sound effects and an interesting setting that isn't sucked dry. Good gameplay too! Yeah everything was good, that's a well rounded package here.

The last wave escalated and after realizing it was the last, it was just the right difficulty for me. Wonder though if you would have to restart the whole game if you died - I guess so.

The opponents were also creative and differed in a meaningful way.

Also nice touch that the music speeds up (if I remember correctly). Oh and the music fits very well too!

Yeah the only thing I would criticize is the lack of the theme, but you already stated that :)

To sum it up - awesome game feel!

Wow, I love it. A very complete mini game, good controls, beautifully and creatively animated.
The mouth orb monsters and there associated ahhhhhh, sounds where awesome.

The main character was beautifully animated and expressive as all heck, the eye work was great, I could feel this little guys anxiety the entire time. Reminded me of David Firth animation, the feel of it, and those little legs. The scale and stretch on the jump was great, added a lot to the good jump controls... lots of great, I am getting repetitive.

Sounds, music where very clean, effective and fun. Is that you making an ahhhhh sound for the mouth tentacle monsters?

I won with 3 hits left. The spawn patterns for the monsters felt fair and challenging, which is often something that is overlooked when making something so quickly. There were some tense moments, followed by some calm, and then more storms...

Great job all around, the only thing I didn't get out of it was the theme, but it was a worthwhile gameplay experience!

Oh, that was fun! I really enjoyed this. It got very hard at the end. The graphics looked good and I really liked the overall style. Good choices with how you made the vile things (and the hero) look. Felt very alien and still very consistent. One of my favorites so far!

Excellent game. The character art and design are incredible, and the sounds and music are great as well. Definitely lacking in the theme department, but other than that, it's a great game!

I couldn't make it to the end, but I really enjoyed the overall design of the game. Mechanics, graphics and audio were all amazing, it's just a little difficult, though that's probably intentional. The clean audio and animation work really helped make the game feel very polished, and the music fits the game really well. Good work!

Awesome. Definitely one of the top entries for me.

Art and animations are wonderful, they make your game stand out. Great job!

Difficulty curve is really nice. At later levels I was afraid I was going to lose, with so many enemies at once, but I managed to win first try with 3 health left :)

Keep it up!

Fun fights against a nasty nemesis! The art was great, and the I liked the music a lot too. Certainly created an intense, creepy mood. I definitely didn't want those THINGS to win! Awesome job!

the animation was very smooth, but about the "things" in question? I think you misspelled "beautiful".

Thank you SO much for the wonderful feedback everyone, couldn't be happier about the reception I'm getting!

@acuriosity yep, that's my voice, also the "charging" and shooting sounds for the enemy magic.

@lethalturtle that's high praise, I love Berserk!
