Granny Goes Deep by universeflow

[raw]
made by universeflow for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Granny Goes Deep is a fast paced arcade-style game where you play as Granny and attempt to find your little Jimmy by falling down a hole, going deeper and deeper.

You can move left and right with the arrow keys or [a]/[d] and use your walker to catch a fall and prevent fall damage by pressing [space] before landing on a platform.

We made this game including all assets, sound effects, voice lines and music from scratch during the jam. The only external asset we used is the SilomBol font for the pixel art text in the UI.

We are all pretty new to game dev and jams in general. This was our first game jam and it was a ton of fun participating in LD48 and making the game - we hope you have as much fun playing it as we had making it!

Features: - Fast paced arcade-style gameplay - 18 different platforms to find while going deeper - Heartbreaking story and cinematic intro scene - Humorous voice lines and texts - Random farts - BINGO!

OUH MY BACK!

Great game :) Very funny, especially the intro. I loved the voice-acting and music, too :D

The controls feel really tight. I think maybe there could have been more of a grace period between pressing spacebar and landing. It was a little difficult to time correctly.

Otherwise solid work!

Pretty awesome! Loved the polish in music, art, gameplay and the particle effects! It shows a good teamwork! Game might be ready for a mobile release as-is!

Very fun and polished, the voice acting was brilliant. My only complaint is that there didn't seem to be an option to play the game full screen.

Premise and voice acting were * chefs kiss *. gameplay was a bit weaker, but still apparent and playable. great stuff.

Great voice acting haha :D Nice audio and graphics. Liked the gameplay premise as well but I would have liked to see a little animation or something indicating the button press while you're in the air, to get a better idea of the "active frames" window.
Also maybe make the camera show a little bit further down during a longer fall since the falling speed rises?

Cool game overall!

The landing mechanic takes gameplay that is pretty similar to DownWell and gives it it's own original identity. Good job guys

@elias-s thanks for the extensive feedback! we were thinking about an indicator but were split on it as it might make the game too easy, maybe something small in the animation would have been possible though if we had a bit more time to polish!

The humor was top notch. Wish you could skip the intro it was a little long. Sound was a little loud for me as well.
LDJam user 236055
28. Apr 2021 · 07:16 UTC
@tengusheath you only have to watch the intro the first time you play, it's saved as a setting! and there is a setting to turn down the sound as well in the options! you can also double press space to skip the intro at any time.

lol, what a great game. It's a treat to see an opening cinematic in a jam game  . The game is simple but feels very polished. The music slaps, the premise and voice overs are hilarious and the controls are snappy and tight. It's good as it is but I think could still be improved if there were some additional variables in the levels that would affect what route you choose. Maybe additional hazards or powerups so that you'd have an extra dimension you need to think about while you make your way down?

@antti-tiihonen thanks for the feedback! we actually planned on adding hazards like spikes and power ups but didn't have enough time as we spent a lot of time on the opening cinematic :D we had lots of fun doing that though and it adds to the whole experience so I think it was worth it ;)

This is super funny and well polished. Great entry. Only problem was that falling multiple platforms way extremely difficult to land. Would have preferred a taller screen ratio and for the player to stay at the top, so you can see things coming more.
LDJam user 236055
28. Apr 2021 · 15:39 UTC
@rhoff95 don't take such a high risk if you can't handle it! ;) we intentionally made it so that it speeds up the longer you fall and it becomes harder to catch it, otherwise you could just fall for a long time, catch it and get a high score. we also tried to get a balance where the camera doesn't scroll you up too quickly (at least at the beginning) so that you can get used to the game until it speeds up in later levels. A taller screen ratio might have been something to try though, thanks for the tip!

Real cool use of bloom and blur. Nice to hear some voice acting, and it the sound overall was very high quality. I got a bit confused about when I had to press space bar at the beginning, I thought it may have to be done just before landing, but after playing for a bit I realised it could be pressed anywhere in the fall, but that's just a player communication thing. Fun arcade action. Well done team.

29. Apr 2021 · 07:54 UTC
@eldogg thanks for your feedback! it should be shortly before landing, if you press too early when falling it will not count! but it does take some practice to get it right, I agree

Fun little arcade game, Like others I loved the voice acting and the music was also pretty good! I could see this being a fun mobile game with different outfits for granny or something haha. But great work overall!

@frostfall thanks for the feedback and I love the outfits idea! we actually thought about adding a way to unlock jimmy as a playable character, but didn't have enough time to do all the animations for him :D

A+ humor here. The cutscene and voice acting are hilarious! "ooh, I slipped a disc!"

I enjoy these kinds of fast paced arcade games, but I wish there was a bit of a "look-forward" camera as she's falling so I can gauge when the next platform arrives :)

Also, love the sassy remarks in the end screen. Best I could do after about a dozen tries ![granny-2.png](///raw/486/z/41b57.png)

@rosypenguin thanks for the feedback on the camera, there's definitely some room for improvement there! Your best score is better than mine btw ;) I'm definitely not the best of the team, though!

fun fact: that message you posted was from some time when everything in the game was broken and unity just showed 999+ notices, 999+ warnings, 999+ errors :D

Really awesome and well-polished game! I love the visual effects and the atmosphere is fantastic. The gameplay is very fun and innovative, challenging but very satisfying. Personally I'd love to be able to get a bit of health back every time I land successfully but overall this is a great entry! Great work!
LDJam user 236055
01. May 2021 · 16:53 UTC
@finn-tr we were thinking about adding a health powerup, but time... getting health back every time you land successfully would have been easy to add though, we just didn't think of it :D thanks for the idea!

I had so much fun! You've managed to create a hilarious and challenging game in the same time. Fantastic. The intro sets the mood 100%, the sfx and voice acting excellent. I like the animations a lot especially the falling animation of the grandma, so funny. Unfortunately i couldn't make a big score cause my hand hurts and i feel like if you want big score you need to spam the space hard. Great entry, excellent job guys, you should be proud of your creation! Well done :)

@kaminos thanks for playing and the great feedback! you actually cannot spam space because you only get one chance during each fall to catch it with your walker, and it has to be shortly before you land! don't over-exhaust granny by spamming please, she needs her breaks! ;)

Wow, this is amazingly polished! Love the interpretation of the theme. Apart from my own, yours is the only entry I've encountered to use the falling mechanics. Now I see how it can be implemented by a team of specialists and it's really amazing! Great graphics, cinematics, amazingly fitting audio, hilarious lines, great voice acting and quite a fun gameplay. I kind of wish there was a bit more to do there than just pressing Space before landing. But I did enjoy the wallslide! Awesome job!

@mykola thanks for the great feedback! we are nowhere near specialists though, we are all pretty new to game dev/jams and unity! yes the wallslide is super fun and we did mean to add more mechanics, but not enough time :)

For a first game jam, it's pretty good! While the design is somewhat standard, I found this quite polished and light-hearted. The granny's voicelines made me chuckle a bit, too. Cool entry.
