To the Center of the Earth by oda

[raw]
made by oda for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Try to go as deep as possible into the earth, but watch out for obstacles that may damage your drill. And remember to handle your engine gently to prevent it from overheating.

The game was maybe too ambitious for a 48h game jam. I initially planned to add mineral ores to mine and upgrades to buy between runs to improve your drill and go deeper. But anyway I'm already glad I managed to release something playable, haha

Simple, but fun game. Could see myself sitting and playing for long stretches of time.

Depth 124. Center of the Earth was so close! But I don't understand why does someone plants underground bombs

The way the sprite rotates and looks like a spinning drill is nice! And when turning the drill, it really feel like it has weight to it. Highest score I got was 108, lovely Highscore game!

I enjoyed the core concept of just infinite play, felt a lot like if flappy bird did less flapping and more drilling.
I didn't particularly enjoy the sound it grated on the ears a bit. That might have been the point though to simulate the experience of being a drill.
The classic games feel of it is pretty awesome, hit the vibe there.
Adding some pick ups or something else to drive the player deeper and deeper might have better refined your core gameplay loop.

The pixelated rotation of drill looks great and the shaking of the screen really added to the feeling your drilling into the earth! Nice detail on that.

The warning sounds were a bit too high pitch for my ears but other than that the other sound effects were good. Nice work getting this done in 48 hours!

nice! the inverted controls, the drone of digging, and the death sound all contributed to an interesting immersive mood

I got to a depth of 115! Very interesting - I especially liked the aesthetic. My one bit of feedback would be to increase the base difficulty, because it takes a while for the game to pose any challenge (~60 depth). In all, very well made :)

I appreciate the use of PICO-8, and the limitations it brings, but the lack of any sort of advancement meant there was zero replayability. What you did have, however, looked quite nice and played well.

Awesome art and controls. The movement of the camera felt like a little much when the drill was at an extreme angle but that also added to the feeling of the game.

I like the simplicity, there isn't much to do but the game feels polished and the core gameplay works well. I really liked having the heat indicator along with the hull's health, it made the game surprisingly interesting for me, and it'd be awesome to see if you could take that idea further by adding some of the things you mentioned in the description. Good work!

Nice and good-looking game. It could be a little faster to make it more exciting. Also it starts off rather easy. I would probably reverse the controls.
