Operation Gridius by flaxhass

[raw]
made by flaxhass for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

At the beginning, our team had the most typical brainstorming you could imagine based on this theme. "Deeper? Huh, what about Mariana Trench?, submarine?, that's ok".

And then, it came up a simple but clever twist, inspired by some particular shape and object, that change the entire idea, just like the feeling we want to show at the end to all players. It was a "screaming" experience.

The entire Gridius Team thanks to Ludum Dare for bringing up this experience and to you, beloved user, specially, for be making the central part of the experience.

had trouble with the controls, the rotate was much faster than expected and the thruster didn't seem to do much? But I liked the overall vibe and setting!

i'm not sure if I was playing wrong but it was as if the thrusters would only work if very particular places.

Overall a fun game! General aesthetic of the game was quite fun and reminded me of old children books. I especially liked the main character idle animation. The songs was a bit gloomy compared to the rest of the game and the squid sound seemed like a bug, as it was way too loud and seemed to play the same sound every frame of the program. The gameplay was simple but quite intuitive. I managed to find all the bombs during my first game, but I feel like it could have been very easy to miss one of them. Good job!

Couldn't try the game. On the start screen there are 4 white buttons and if I click one of them, the game freeze :/

Nice game ! The graphics and the game mechanics are cool. The squid sound effect was too loud but otherwise it was fun, I liked it. Maybe the enemy could hurt you more, it would be great to be "wounded" (you can't turn left for the next 30 seconds or something like that). Great game, good job to the team !

I liked the art in this one! The animation of the main character and the bubble VFX were nice! Movement of the character was good too. I had a bit of a jump scare moment when the squids attacked me, but after lowering the game volume I was able to continue. I enjoyed how the game wasn't too punishing when knocking against other enemies and I felt like I had enough time to find all of the key items to win. Neat work!

The game is very good, there are some small bugs regarding the collisions of the characters, but that does not matter much. the big "problem" if it can be called that is that sometimes even though the objective of the game is over, the final cinematic does not play. And here is a little spoiler alert as to why I think the game is called like that, if we finish the game a cutscene is played showing us as if an ice cream exploded and we left. In Argentina there is an ice cream shop called "Grido" and clearly Gridius is a reference to this ice cream shop.
In short, very good game but it would be nice if they added something so that the game models have something in common and appear more harmonious.

The surprise ending is quite funny.

The controls feel fine to me, and I was navigating the world without much trouble. Seems like there is really not much penalty for running into all the fish, squids and other monster creatures. You get bounced around a bit ;) and then can continue on your merry way. There is more than enough time to get to all your objectives. If you'd like to challenge your player more, maybe introduce limited health or some movement penalties after running into enemies.

The sfx are very intense! It really creates this atmosphere of urgency. Quite nicely done. Only a Cthulhu squid seems a somewhat too loud in comparison to others. Would be good to normalize all the sfx to the same level.

There is a bit of a mix of styles in the art. Would be nice if there was more consistency and uniformity of style. Each piece is nice on its own, they just don't gel together as well as they could :).

In any case, quite a nice jam job :)

It ran fine for me and the controls were okay, must be the fixes you implemented! You managed to put a lot of enemy types in which is good. Some enemies had a penalty for being hit by them (the ones that pushed you back were the most effective) but some could be a bit harsher. The squids scared me a lot, they could be a bit quieter! Was not expecting that ending, well done!

Nice controls, nice ending, graphics were good and the music / sound effects did there job as well. Just the squid sound was ... something else I guess. I had a few flashing background sprites and some enemies where hidden in the walls which was a bit nasty. But I still finished the game. A marker in which direction the next ... whatever I was searching, was would be kind of great. This way I just dived deeper and hoped I didnt missed something left or right in the level. Great work everybody!
