Super Jackhammer by tomn114

[raw]
made by tomn114 for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

s3.png

Your goal is to dig as deep as you can with your super powered jackhammer. It gets really fast, but the problem is you can't slow it down yourself.

Controls:

Down - Powers up the jackhammer if you are going slow. If you are going fast, pressing it will do nothing as the jackhammer will power itself.

Left/Right - Move left and right. Used to maneuver past obstacles and to get ores. (Note: you can only dig to the side while going down)

Blocks:

Silver/Gold/Diamond - Collect these for extra score.

Obsidian - Used to slow yourself down if you are going too fast. Be careful though as you can lose all power and lose if you hit too many too fast.

Lava - You will die if you fall into it.

Changelog:

(4/30/21) - New link added to JAR compatible down to Java 8

I tried to play the game but I kept getting an error. It looks like I don't have a recent enough version of Java, but I updated it. What version of Java did you use?

```
Error: LinkageError occurred while loading main class com.tomn114.main.Game
java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: com/tomn114/main/Game has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 59.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 55.0```
@sonicpixelation Hi so sorry you couldn't run my game. I think I used Java 15
It's up to you but I would recommend building it in an older version. Because the Java 15 JDK is locked behind creating an account with Oracle, as far as I can tell, not as many people will play it. I think open JDK can target up to version 11. Just my opinion. I will keep any eye on it I am determined to play it.
P.S. Congrats on completing your first Game Jam. You should be proud of yourself.
@sonicpixelation Thank you, I will look into using an older Java version when I get the time. It seems like other people also have a hard time running the game as well
@tomn114 Not an inconvenience at all in my case, I enjoy the meta game of getting things to work!
What can I do with this?
@xpoho Oh, sorry for the error. Make sure the .jar file and the "res" folder are in the same folder. The error is happening because I hard-coded the path for the image files in the res folder so the res folder has to be in the same folder with the jar. Like this:
Hopefully that works!!
General presentation leaves a lot to be desired, but the gameplay itself is pretty satisfying.
@roboolet Yep definitely, I would've liked to make the art more polished and add sound and UI but unfortunately was stuck too long on fixing bugs. Thank you for your feedback and playing my game though :D
I actually liked this a lot. Was fun to play and a great idea. The graphics do need some polishing but I understand the lack of time. Was my problem as well.
So the core gameplay is nice and fun but could need some adjusting in my opinion.
So I think the Jackhammer is getting too fast too fast. I think it would improve gameplay to reduce max speed and acceleration a bit.
@hugison Thank you so much for the helpful feedback! Yeah the game is actually quite ugly in my opinion and didn't look how I wanted it to but have to prioritize the code:D. And also yeah I kind of went overboard on the acceleration now that I realize it
@tomn114
Yeah better to focus on code and not on the graphiocs espacially when you just have one day like you said. Nice art alone does not make a game fun.
Good job making this game.
The Java 8 version works like a charm!
The gameplay may be simple, but that what makes the game fun to play! ;)
@gamedev-and-architecture Thank you very much! Yeah I aimed to make the concept as simple as possible so it would be easy for people to play my game but I also didn't want to overwhelm myself on the side of making it either. Glad you enjoyed it, even though there are a lot of flaws :D
Pretty fun flowing around breaking lots of tiles - I like the unique take on the downward block breaking thing with the fact that you can easily slide around breaking a bunch of stuff pretty much at once.
Played it a handful of times, here's my highest score :) (a highscore display on the hud would be a cool addition)
