Deep Breath by Eduardo Scheffler

[raw]
made by Eduardo Scheffler for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Post.png

Game Concept:

You are an astronaut working on an hostile environment that wishes to take away your last breath. When an unexpected event happens, you are pushed into the vastness of space to your own luck. You can accept your fate, or struggle against it. Use WASD or directional Keys to avoid getting hit by space debris, while you go deeper into the space.

Feedback:

This is the first jam we did as a team. Please feel free to share with us your thoughts on the gameplay and about how we can improve it, as well as any ideas! (:

The NO! at the end when I died made me laugh. Cool mechanic where objects pass you by, but it was a bit hard to determine about where to position myself to get oxygen at first. Nice work!

Nice work! The audio design is engaging, and I like the "stickiness" of the astronaut's movement through the scene. It was initially a little tricky to figure out exactly where I had to be to avoid getting hit, and I felt like I could just ignore most debris by just sitting in the middle. The oxygen was a fun way to get me to move around, I think it could have been more engaging if I needed to collect Oxygen more often in order to require me to move around more :) Great job on the game!

I really liked the graphics, they were perfect, the music and the sfxs were also sensational the only thing I think the game sinned a little bit, was to combine the theme, I thought it was a bit of a disconnect, but the game was very good

@madmystic Thx man! <3

@cheekibreeki Glad you enjoyed! We've had our share of laughs too over the "NO!" game over. Thx for the comment, we're still tweaking the player's character movement (:

@occasoftware Thx for your comment! Indeed currently sitting in the middle may sometimes get you safely to the end. Our RNG for the obstacle generation seems to enjoy spawning items elsewhere but in the middle :p We're working on that for an upcoming build! We're glad for your feedback!

@Hideos We're glad you liked it! <3

Hey team! Congratulations on this Ludum Dare entry!

Just played it. Really enjoyed the overall concept of the game.

The gameplay is solid and balanced (besides those O2 thingies running from me in the last seconds everytime!)

The art style is original and cool! =)

The Music sets the spatial mood and Sound Effects prompt a nice feedback for gameplay -- bad objects have a good sound, good objects have a nice sound response too! I like that.

Congratulations everybody for the game.

Best regards,
Caio Varalta.

Congrats for the game o/ Nice voxel style, I think some balancing on the astronaut speed would be a nice improvement! The music and sounds are good, specially when your oxygen is running over the breathes sound is just distressful, contributes a lot for the mood!

@varalta Thx from everyone from the team! We are really glad from ur feedbacks (:

@locustjin Yeah! Thanks very much for the cumpliments!

@rubentipparach Glad you enjoyed it! We used MagicaVoxel for the production pipeline and it seems it worked well for the final look of the assets and game in general! We intend to keep using it :)

@radiotrophia Thx for playing mate!! It was really fun to make it too!

@Rawb Heyo! Glad you liked it man, it was one of the first things we had working with audio in the game, and soon as I saw it with SFX, we got the tone of what we were doing! Glad u liked it!

@lill4s Thanks a lot! We appreciate ur feedback!

Nice game! I liked the art and concept, especially the "physics" of the objects moving towards the screen, well thought and executed, as well as the astronault's movimentation! I just wished there were more oxygen spawning on screen, to engage the player to move more often.

Music and sfx makes you enter in the space oblivion mood too! Congrats!

The delayed response on input really gave the feeling of floating! But still had the feeling of control. Simple and fun.

A very cool game! I love the music it fits the game very well, but I played it for a longer time and then came the point where there where no more objects spawnt.
But I had really fun playing the game!

Clever usage of theme, and an interesting concept for unlimited runner type of game. Also, graphics were really nice, however I kinda disliked the way you integrated audio. The music (while good itself) was kinda breaking the mood for me, dire circumstances the astronaut found themself in could use some dark ambience.

Smooth, tight game. Simple, but fun. The art is nice, and I like the idea of the astronaut switching his O2 tanks in the middle of space (lol). I liked the aesthetic quite a bit. Good job!

Great graphics but even for a space game the controls felt a bit too floaty/weak for my taste.

Great entry! I liked the theme as a take on the endless runner genre. I could see bigger and more challenging obstacles being fun. Keep up the good work

great job. the sound effects stand out as a very good fit. maybe would have been cool to have a gas thruster sound effect while you move around, with some particles to go along with it. biggest thing gameplay wise would be to ramp up the difficulty more over time, I eventually threw myself into some debris because it seemed like I would be able to go on forever.

@vitluke Thanks you very much for the feedback, vitluke!! We have a new update (version 1.1) in our page, that we put some of ur considerations into action! They worked very well!

@szymon-ogd Thanks, Szymon! We really appreciate the feedback!

@meenakshi Heyo, meenakshi! Thanks for the feedback! We are still tweaking the game to make it funnier! We’re glad you enjoyed!

@mrscythe Thanks, man! Our audio dev appreciated a lot ur feedback!

@koalatte Oh yeahh! The character may still be wandering through the space as I write this (:

@dergamer Glad you enjoyed it, DerGamer! Thanks for the feedback on that feature (unforeseen bug), we have a new update online (version 1.1) that has this issue solved, also with tweaked difficulty (:

@kel Thanks a lot, kel!! The team sends you a hug in return!!

@kszaku Thanks for the feedback duuuude!

@thefoppian OOohh yeah! We’re glad for your feedback, thefoppian! Actually, the astronaut has a built in AI in his back side which switches the O2 tanks and recycles the old one. We just cant see it because the player character is facing the player, but the programmer convinced me it’s there xD

@frokes Hey frokes, thanks for the feedback! In our next update of the game, we may try some different controls for the jetpack to tweak the players movement a little bit!

@qyoneda Thanks a lot for the feedback, qyoneda! We had to be careful in order to not going in it too much, we hope we got it right ^^

@gmor Thanks a lot gmor :D

@preda The team were glad to hear this, we had a lot of firsts in this jam! We’re happy it worked out in the end (:

@frozenfire92 Thanks for the feedback, frozen! We just released update 1 (version 1.1), in which we went for your suggestion and tweaked the gameplay and obstacle quantity! It should be far more challenging than before. In future updates, we intend to work in object sizes as well (:

@kiptok Thanks for the feedback, kiptok! The team, and speacially our tech artist, felt the love u sent through! We’ve just tweaked the game difficulty in the new update (version 1.1), in which we added a difficulty curve in the game. Hope u enjoy it!

@gregfagan Thanks a lot for the feedback, greg! We took your suggestion carefully, and just released a new game version that addresses some of the aspects you pointed in your comment! We have in version 1.1 difficulty curve for the objects, particles for the thrusters, and some other features that are now working properly! Future updates will bring some other things to the table! Check out if you can (:

Very interesting, I had the same idea for my game, but the execution is a bit different. I really liked the 3D pixelated look, it is very unique. The music and sound effects are really good too, they set the mood really well. Well done.

Nice little game! I felt sorry for the lone astronaut. I like the music and SFX too. Good job!
