Kerene by jabsatz

[raw]
made by jabsatz for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Follow Kerene to the depths of hell while digging and fighting monsters

The deep is a dangerous place, crawling with monsters and traps, you will need to use whatever tools you find to defend yourself, while using your trusty pickaxe to dig your way through.

But be careful! Digging can leave you stranded with no way out!

(You can see controls with the escape key)

I love the general look of the game! Also a good way to use the theme of this jam :)

its a nicely balanced experience with satisfying movement and attacks, although I found it a bit frustrating that I had to start all over when I died. overall a good job!

overall this is a very good game, but the control system was very hard (at least for me) and i found myself continually asking myself, do i left click or right click? i think it would have been better to just assign a specific key to the pick/wand/sword and just point in the direction you want to go -- at any rate still liked it -- thanks for making this game

Good work here, I really like this genre and the aesthetic is spot on. The controls had me a little mixed up. I appreciate your work, thanks.

Really well done game. The controls took some getting used to but by the time I reached the DARK LORD I figured it out. The boss fights were fun, but kinda cheeseable. I found myself trying to safe-spot a lot of enemies, I dunno if that was intended but it worked out for me. Good game!

Compared to others, I was fine with the controls. Idk maybe I'm built different. The game was fun, very innovative for the digging mechanic, allowing control to the path you want to take. It was a little frustrating the fact that you have to restart when you die, with no checkpoints, but that's okay, it kind of makes the game a little harder. Boss fights were kind of "too easy?", you can simply spam your attack and they never get the chance to do anything, you could also skip them. The audio was great and it fits well, but very loud, no volume control option was available, so I had to turn down the volume of the game itself. The ending was a little unsatisfying.

Good job on this game, I thought it was well rounded. The controls were a bit odd at first, but I got used to them. I think the game could have used some more difficulty to make the integrations more interesting. Other than that the game was well made!

Nice game! I'm a fan of the different weapons and how you've designed the level to emphasize swapping between them, rather than just sticking to the one you like. I also like how the music changes as you progress - dropping down the first pit and being greeted by all of the enemies and the music was a great surprise!

Thank you for all your comments so far!

@matterlinx The game not being too hard was a deliberate choice, it's the third game jam we've made together as a team and the previous times we found we erred too much on the side of making a really hard game, so this time we made a conscious effort to tone it down so it was beatable. It's good to know we're in a good ballpark, even if there are still improvements to be made.

@jamie-simpson The checkpoints was definitely something we wanted to implement, but unfortunately due to my own inexperience with the engine I wasn't able to make it on time :(

As for the dark lord, it was a really late addition that came on by circumstance, we didn't have time for any other additions and it was a fun way to wrap up the ending. Sorry for the dissapointment :)

main character is so cute! i think you made a full fledged game here. pixel art is flawless, mechanics are fun and its just frustrating enough to keep you playing ! awesome game

thank you @dobrila ! I'd like to mention that the enemies were taken from a free asset pack from itch, and we didn't have time to replace those, but all the other ones were made by us :)

Over all very nice, the art is nice, the game play feels nice and it's really calm and not stressing. I would have liked if there were more variety in the background providing with some elements like flowers or something of that sort. Great job!

That's quite a cool game you delivered here ! You find a nice balance to make the different weapons relevant. The only downside for me is the bassline that kinda got on my nerve when I died and retried, but that's my personal tastes speaking here :P Great job <3

I'm surprised by the amount of content in the game. Combat felt fun and forced you to think about positioning and changing weapons. Dying was too punishing for me though.

I wish there was more variety in the paths you can take through the destructible terrain, but other than that was quite fun

Pretty funny end :D
I liked the artwork and the sounds, but my favorit thing was the level design. It was really clever somethimes. The movement felt a bit wierd from time to time, but it was okay. Well done :D

Nice ending haha, I love the art and the sound design, I got tired of the gameplay and found an exploit when I realised that the invicibility time is very long. You can rush through the level without taking enough damage for you to die before finding some health pickups. But besides that the game has a good level design to learn the mechanics and all

Really fun game this. The level is well made, and the enemies were placed in such a way that it kept me focused the entire time I played it.

I was iffy on the controls for a while, but then I started thinking of each enemy encounters as a navigation puzzle, and it started making more sense. That said, I ended up just running through the final couple layers without killing anything since it didn't seem worth it. I liked the music being timed with difficult encounters, that really adds to the tension. Nice work!

There is a nice variety in gameplay and the digging mechanic is clever. I found that getting to the boss is harder than the boss itself. I wished there were more checkpoints.

The level are very well made besides that.

Wow great job with this, Im actually super impressive and really enjoyed it! The concept is simple but you got a lot out of it with great level design! The two types of enemies mixed with the different scenarios you threw the player into made it great. It was especially cool that you could occasionally take a different path to dig through and get by some enemies. And then of course the final scene was quite funny. I honestly have no criticisms or recommendations here, just great job!
