Mine The Beat by GamesBySaul

Mine The Beat.
A Rhythm-Based Mining Game where your goal is to move to the beat, mine ores, avoid enemies and get rich.
A game made by Hunterson Studio (Programming), TKIMUSE (Audio) and GamesBySaul (Art) as part of Ludum Dare 48 where the theme was "Deeper and Deeper".

In this game, it's important to watch the beat as you can only move or perform actions on the beat!

Customisation is your friend! In the game, there are a variety of customisation options that you can add to your dwarf! Really make the character your own! And feel free to share your creations with us down below!

Go even deeper in the mine and collect ores! But beware you won't be alone and the deeper you go the tougher it gets! I wonder what you will find at the end of each floor!

A few cons; It wasn't really clear to me why you have to choose how many ores I had to sell. Did I need these ores later in the game? Did I miss something?
Also the delay between hitting the WASD-keys and moving the player was a bit too much. Especially for a rhythm-game.
Overall; Nice entry!
That's fair point and could've been explained more for sure, basically you miss nothing by not selling/selling, though the prices may differ on the floor you are  We did have some plans to enhance the shop but the 72 hours wasn't enough time for it! Maybe in a post jam update!
Yeah we realised that needed some work! Thanks again! :sparkles:
Thanks so much for the kind words!
I love how you put in the effort to add character customization as well!
As others have commented, the movement feel a little unresponsive. I think responsive controls is one of the most important things to get right in a rhythm game like this. The GDC session "The Best Animation Tricks of the Trade" from 2016 has a great section about responsive animation and anticipation that I highly recommend you checking out!
Other than that I think this is a solid entry.
Cute graphics and amazing music (I ran around in a circle for a while just listening to the soundtrack :P)
Hopefully movement is something we can fix post jam! - We will check that out! :D Thank you for the recommendation!
I was doing that the entire testing process! :D

This game oozes style. One of my favourites of the jam so far. Give a pat in the back to @tkimuse, 'cause the music really ramps up the experience.
But there's pretty much nothing not to like about this game. Great graphics, a bunch of style, attention to detail and so much polish. *Of course* there's character editing. *Of course* the music ramps up with the combo multiplier. *Of course* there are short puns and comments between levels. That's polish, that's style, that's heart.
The one thing that could have made this super addictive would have been sound effects. These going along with the beats and the music would have been a dopamine induced headbanging time. I hope there's an opportunity to add them at some point in the future, or to have that in mind for future projects. But rest assured that this doesn't affect my opinion on the audio of the game. Superb music!
LD website kept me from commenting here for over half an hour. I'd say that refreshing every now and then was well worth it just to tell you your game is a blast! :whale:
It really feels great to see all the lovely comments you had, and we are glad you liked the puns between levels!
Sound effects would be a really nice addition, maybe post jam! Thanks for the suggestion!
:sparkling_heart:
Good ... Someone found the puns!
I can appreciate the dwarf puns that show up between floors.
The art is also very nice. I like the particle effect that appears every beat.
Exploring the caves is fun. Giving me some stardew valley vibes.
The character customization is interesting, especially for the social media potential. I can also respect the amount of time put into making this screen.
I think that my only inconvenience is the animations being too delayed between each beat. I expected more snappy instantaneous movement so that the game feels more responsive.
However, The actual animations themselves for both the player and enemies feel polished, so I think it's just the timing part that needs some attention.
It may also be interesting to increase the speed of the song as you do deeper down to increase difficulty as well to make it more exciting.
All in all, a well put together game that has a decent length to it, and a nice rhythm system set up here. Great job!
Thanks for the kind words!
Thank you so much for the kind words (and for appreciating our puns, glad they weren't b'ore-ing!) and for liking the customisation! A mechanic which I am so glad we added!
I think many people would agree with you, and this is something we will look into post jam, and it getting faster as its get harder is a great idea!
Thank you so much again! :D
We had an idea for you to buy things like a better pickaxe or health and such. But we decided to prioritize polish over content.
@korfi I guess this reply is also a repsonse to your comment
The huge input delay makes it honestly difficult to enjoy. It feels out of sync by half a phase, all the time. It's really a shame because the audio&visuals are top notch.
@bogurodzica Glad you enjoyed it! :D More puns will be coming in future updates/update I will make sure of it!
@saussol Thank you very much!
@m11 Thank you!
@korfi Really glad you enjoyed it! I thought the character was pretty cute too!
@midnightmist Thank you so much! It's really heartwarming to see that people enjoyed it!
@valeth2124 That would be a great idea, maybe faster songs will equal faster beats in the future ;) - And thank yo u so much
@alaah It's a mystery, we will never know  - Yeah we did notice that as an issue, will hopefully get fixed in the future!
I had a little bit of a difficult time following my HP, and there were times I couldn't really tell if it was going up or down, or why - perhaps an HP bar, or some variety of guide for damage would be really helpful in that regard!
With regards to money and selling things, I also wasn't certain in the game what the point of only selling some of the ores you collected was - was there some kind of benefit to keeping ores on you that I just completely missed? I always ended up clicking 'sell all and continue' for them.
I could hear the music ramping up sometimes, which I assume is when you get a better combo, but I was never able to ramp it up very much - I'm not excellent at rhythm games, so that very easily could have been the cause. Still, it felt very satisfying whenever I *did* start hearing the claps, so kudos for that.
Overall a great and well put together experience! Your team did well, and I can't wait to see what other games you make for future jams!! ☆☆☆☆☆
For the HP, it is equal to your combo/streak at the side but we agree that could be made clearer and same with keeping ores, certain ores sell better on different floors but we didn't have enough time to make that clearer.
Thank you so much for playing!
Really had a lot of fun playing this.
Graphic is nice and the beat is motivating!
The cusomization felt a bit "unnecessary"?
The one time I died was at the beginning of the level where my dwarf just didnt move :/
Anyways a really great game.
One of the best I've played.
And that's a good bit of feedback, I think we also wanted to prepare for all skill levels, I for one am awful at rhythm games, but we can look into that!
Thanks again for playing!
How odd, may have been a bug, we can look into that!
Aww that's too kind thank you so much! :sparkles:
I'm not the best at follow-the-rythm kind of games, but the part I tried, I really enjoyed it  Great entry for this LD!!
@laurari Thanks! Even though the game might be harden than you're used to, I'm glad you enjoyed :D
