Into The Dark Blue by Stampizi

[raw]
made by Stampizi for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

My first Ludum Dare submission, and it was a wild ride. My game took the theme pretty literal, you control a ROV to get treasure from the bottom of the ocean, the deep. Run into any wildlife, and it is game over. I had a lot of fun doing this, and I learned quite a bit. I heard suggestions to keep the scope of the game down, and I think I bit off the perfect amount of game.

While the game itself is pretty simple, I made the level more challenging than I planned on. I still haven't beaten it without cheating, but I've gotten oh so close. The sine sharks are particularly challenging.

I used Unity, but I need to get better with it. I hacked together a rudimentary collision system, so the hitboxes don't quite line up how one would think they should. It makes for a few close calls, but I haven't seen any places where you obviously didn't run into the wildlife.

I like the art-style, and details like the ocean getting darker as you go down. As you said, the collisions are a bit wonky which makes it frustrating to play.

Good first LD-entry!

I think it's broken. The game tells me I "lost" when my little ROV takes out a ROV killing shark. To me, that totally feels like a win! :) Thanks for game!

Bit too tricky to move for my taste. Love the drawings

One of the better games ive played so far, I really like the art! Realizing that I had to bring the treasure back and not just reach it was an "oh no" moment. Those sharks are difficult.

Fun game, but a bit hard, so I didn't get very far. Great for a first Ludum Dare entry!

Flappy bird, is that you? The difficulty was tuned a bit too high for me. But the mood was great with the graphics. I missed some nautical music or sound effects to really bring it home. Great entry!

it was pretty tough after getting the chest, it's not fair I only get one life haha. Pretty cool though, I really loved diving deeper and finding out the kind of wildlife lurking in the waters. good job!

Would be a nice relaxing game if it had some chill music in the background.

Nice entry! I love the drawn art style. Yes the difficulty was too high but I know you realized that. The collisions needed some tuning - I would overlap with the sharks at times and not get hurt. Otherwise great job!

I had fun! I like precision games like this. I was able to make it to the treasure, but wasn't able to make it back up. Like someone else in the comments says, the collision boxes could use some fine tuning. Also, sound effects and music would have been nice. (Unless there was and my audio wasn't working.) I know it's difficult on short time, but if you can squeeze audio in, it makes a big difference. Even if you use pre-existing assets and remove yourself from the audio category, it makes the whole experience more enjoyable and might boost your score in other categories. On a positive note, I really liked the hand drawn art style for sure. It's very unique and charming. Thanks for making the game!
