Hector's Forge by chainedlupine

[raw]
made by chainedlupine for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

Description

Hector's Planet is an open world mining simulator. (Not a game, because I don't have any gameplay loops, haha!)

You are tasked with taking down a mining tank and trying to find the rarest of all ores in the galaxy.

Controls

  • W,A,S,D = Drive the tank (arrow keys work too)
  • E = Enable digging
  • SHIFT = Boost your speed
  • SPACEBAR = Activate thrusters (ie: jump)
  • X = Call the spaceship to pick you up

Addtional:

  • F = Make fullscreen/windowed
  • ESCAPE = Get cursor back (when controlling tank)
  • TAB = Toggle UI
  • F10 = Quit game

For right-handed people, these alternates also work:

  • ARROW KEYS = Drive
  • CTRL = Digging
  • SHIFT = Boost

Note: World is only saved when you return to your ship. If you want to erase it, delete the "voxelworld.db" file that the game creates.

Features

Things with a :whitecheckmark: are actually implemented in the game. I just wanted to list everything to demonstrate what my scope was for this game.

  • :whitecheckmark: Unlimited Voxel world for you to mine and plunder!
  • :whitecheckmark: Persistent world! Game will save your digging!
  • :x: Watch your fuel! Running out of Burnite will leave your tank stranded!
  • :x: Hector is the home of many hostile subterranean enemies, so watch out!
  • :x: Collect as much as you can, then return to your ship to offload.
  • :x: Upgrade your tank so it can hold more, shoot better, has more shields, and is faster!
  • :whitecheckmark: Rich sound effects!

Tools Used

  • Photoshop and Blender for art.
  • Godot game engine v3.3
  • Zylann's Voxel plugin for Godot.
  • SIsilicon's Volumetrics lighting plugin for Godot.

Why I Didn't Finish

Mostly, it was me learning how to use Zylann's Voxel plugin. This took up most of Friday and Saturday, and so I missed the compo. I then decided to shift to the Jam, but then I didn't make a lot of progress on Sunday due to being busy. So I am uploading what I have, because I want to share what I did get finished!

Assets

All 3D assets used in this game are by me.

The audio is mostly from Sonnis.com GDC game audio bundle (2018). The dirt/rock textures are from texturelib.com

Graphics, open world and concept are definitely the strongest parts of your game.
Shame you weren't able to finish it. Even driving around and digging freely was quite fun considering that you can mine wherever you want.

I think that with some work this could be very fine product.
FPS is also not quite there yet, but as stated above: some work and it will be fine.

The direction in which this project is going is very good. I hope you will be able to finish it.
