In Too Deep by RefraX295

made by RefraX295 for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

Your company has found remote planet that is rich in resources and you have been tasked with mining a particularly rich vein of minerals on it. The local inhabitants however will not take kindly to your presence there and as you push deeper into the resource fields, protecting your production line is going to get more difficult by the second.

s3.png

* How to play: * * There are 2 types of mineral deposits: blue and yellow. * The yellow minerals will generate your score while the blue deposits will generate credits for building with. * To obtain resources from a deposit, you must build a miner on it and connect it to your base via a pipeline. * Enemies will attack your pipeline regularly, so you will need to defend it with turrets.

Pressing escape ended my game :( oops

It was pretty fun! I was playing waiting for more units to unlock, if there was then I probably would've kept playing

A fun game and a good entry, some upgrades to the turrets and mines would have been a great addition, but overall enjoyed playing.

It was fun! Not sure if there's a limit or it's just due to the lag, but after placing a bunch of turrets, I wasn't able to add more.

It was fun game! I would have liked if there was a wider spread of the mining points - make the player choose what direction to expand. The core system though is solid, and would be a good base for an expanded game.

Simple but strategy game, finished with score 5684. Better "snapping" would be cool so you can build pipes in straight lines and then obviously more content but hey 48 hours is 48 hours :)

Pretty nice entry! Some sounds would have really been nice and after building a ton of turrets pipes and generators, the game became really slow  But the overall gameplay was pretty solid and the art was great! Maybe 2 smaller levels would have been more interesting than 1 that takes this long but hey, there is always next time to try and do better and better!

Oops escape without a 'are you sure ' Nice concept. Like syko said: some smaller levels. Then I would feel so bad for my escape-key.

Had fun playing! I'd like it if the storm didn't happen and I could just keep playing until the enemies overrun the base. You've got a bug happening on replay which results in the same spawn count from last game continuing, effectively overrunning the new base immediately on new game. You could expand on this in the future with more resource types, more turret types, and perhaps the ability to durable walls to force enemies to take a certain route where you can focus them down. great game overall, especially in 48 hours!

This is so so fun!! Got 2449. The graphics are nice and stylish, going deeper in the map feels very satisfying, keeping the ants away is a great challenge. Don't see anything bad in it!

I got 7677.

This was nice!

There was no audio--I'm not sure if this is something wrong on my end, or if there was actually no audio.

I enjoyed the balance between expanding and defending, and I thought that choosing between upgrading my moneymaking vs upgrading my final score was interesting. There's something in that particular mechanic to be explored, I think.

There's some relatively small stuff you can do to level this up pretty quickly:

- WASD/arrow-key camera controls
- Moving the camera using only the mouse on the edge of the screen feels unresponsive
- An indicator showing where you're being attacked.
- If you want to be really fancy, showing different indicators for "my turrets are being damaged" and "my infrastructure is being damaged" would be wise. 90% of the time, my turrets can take care of themselves, so I don't care *too* much about that alert. But if the bugs got through my turrets and are chomping on the miners, I care a lot.
- updating the pipe graphic logic so that they have bends instead of only crosspieces

Something to think about: I didn't like that I had to stretch my pipe way far out and then defend *the whole length of the pipe* evenly. It meant that I didn't have to make very many interesting decisions, because the whole pipe needs the same amount of turrets. Having predictable spawnpoints for the bugs would make this play a little more like a tower defense, where protecting certain points on the map is more important than others. Having obstacles that the bugs can't walk through (and that I can't pipe through) would also help this.

I think this game is pretty snazzy!

Thanks for the awesome feedback @youthfulidealism, I totally agree with your points. There actually is WASD camera controls implemented, although its not mentioned anywhere in the game so its not very obvious.

As for the audio, I ran out of time to create any so there isn't any in this build.

@refrax295 that's funny--I tried WASD (web version) and it didn't work for me. It might just be something wrong on my end--perhaps I had caps lock on or something.

i scored 6300 on my first try. I found it compelling although more towers would have been fun to add deeper strategic decisions.Technically, I noticed that the game dropped to about 10fps or so once I reached a certain size.

Great Compo game, very simple and easy to grasp. Found myself engaged the whole time

That was fun! I got 4105. the large differences in scores that people are reporting suggests that there's some strategy involved in getting the higher scores which often isn't the case with games put together in 48 hours, so well done there. Building out a large base makes it feel like I've accomplished something and I like the visual style of the game - it's very clean. As others have said some it would be nice to have some audio and more variety in the units/buildings. I'd also like some way of differentiating between the score and credit deposits after I've built a miner on them.

I enjoyed the game a lot! there was a nice ramp in difficulty as time progressed which caught me out originally, I had to rethink my strategy and start placing more turrets (especially when the larger enemies came). Would be nice to have a variety of turrets, maybe more expensive but stronger ones in a future version, but at the same time it didn't need it. Overall a really nice game entry that was fun to play!

The mechanics are simple but effective. The best part of the game for me is that it takes the idea of a tower defense and adds a risk vs reward feature in the form of over-extending yourself. Pretty interesting game design. I'd like to be able to zoom in and out. The most frustrating thing was that I did see or hear any notification that my pipeline was being attacked somewhere, which means that I would have to scroll back and forth across it in order to be effective. Cool idea though and good implementation.

Great entry, tons of fun! I ended up playing it to completion and got a score of 10187! Very well balanced, not too hard not too easy.

Managed to beat 5000 before the timer ran out, was very satisfying to get enough money to surround all my mines with a boatload of turrets and then watch them all freak out when an enemy came near. I noticed that the world was pretty big - but I didn't build much further than the first screen worth of space because going back and forth to check what needs fixing was a hassle.

Also, great game name

Sincerely,

Congratulations on your compo entry! I really had some fun there. Got a score of 5473.

Next time try to focus a little on audio, that really brings a lot of value to the game.

Solid little game. I usually don't like games like this, but there was something appealing about your execution. I loved the effective shapes and 3d art. I will say the constant ramp up in enemy spawning led to some panic on my end. I don't know if you were already doing this or were aware but got pinched by time, but one approach I suggest for that is to have a wave of a spawn rate, that goes from little patches of enemies, to a lot, then back again to give the player the "tension and release". But I enjoyed your game...but not proud enough of my score.....( only in the 3000s XD )

I made it to a score of 6987, how did I do? I liked playing it! It was all very polished and worked as expected. The goals are simple and easily understandable (although I did have to check a few times which crystal did what).
At the beginning there was a real challenge. I had to choose between building turrets, or continueing to build more miners. At some point however I had more than enough money, and whenever the enemies came through I just dragged my mouse over the screen to place a whole lot of turrets. Maybe a bit more balancing is necessary there.
As others have said already, I really think some sound effects could have helped this game a lot.
Thank you for making this! I enjoyed it a lot :D

My score was near 6000 so I guess I did well. It is a very good game and everything worked well. I would have liked a way to delete buildings as sometimes I placed a pipeline wrong, but that was mostly my OCD. Some sound would be nice but it's good either way.

Great job!
