DrillDrill: The Quest for Diamonds by Hoeleboele

[raw]
made by Hoeleboele for Ludum Dare 48 (JAM)

You are Drill Drill a little Drill in a big world. Your friends need diamond dust to keep them warm during winter and it is your task to get them. Dig down deep in the underground until you hit the red line. This line will bounce you back up to the ground but make sure you have enough bounce power to get back to the top or you will be lost down there forever.

This is not the only danger you will find on your way down and back up you will come across bombs that will not leave you unscarred when you touch them.

Will you make it deep enough to claim the biggest of diamonds or will you get lost in the ground like many before you.

Really good game. The first time I played I ended up not buying enough bounce booster so I lost pretty quick but once I figured out that the bounce bar went down ever time I hit it I realized what I needed to do. I like the little design choices you made like having the rock layers get darker and dark so that at the black layer you could only make out the bombs by the little face on them. My one wish for this game is that when you have a bunch of bounce power ups it can actually take some time to land on the ground after bouncing which can throw off the flow. This is really good for being made in 48 hours

This is really polished for a Compo entry! Drilling those diamonds is *so satisfying....* The controls seemed a bit floaty at first but I got used to it after a few games. I'm not quite sure why I kept winning at random points, but I kept winning so I guess I can't complain.

I also noticed that if you don't fullscreen the game it'll cut off parts of the screen. Not sure if that's an itch.io issue or a Unity window problem?

The game feel very good and is fun.
The physic of the movement on the ground is a bit sliperry and I would love tohave a music for the long drills.

Very nice !

Cool concept. I like the digging gameplay that is fast paced and more interactive than most dig-dug-likes. Well done.

Took me a little while to understand what the game over mechanic was, but it was pretty neat once it clicked.

Good Job

I really enjoy the music that goes with the game, I do wish the game was more clear when it was about to end as it just stops suddenly and I wasn't quite sure why. Other than that I see a pretty fun game. Good Work!

Wow, what a great idea for a game! :v:

Here's my feedback:
- Simple, yet fun and clever gameplay loop and mechanics
- Smooth, responsive controls
- Charming pixel art
- Nice take on the theme

I think this game could be made into a fun and addictive mobile game with some tweaks. :iphone:

Some constructive feedback:
- It would be nice to always see where the red line is with some sort of a metric (meters deep) or an arrow in the sidelines
- Maybe add some more upgrades / items to buy. For example, an extra rope that gets you out before game over or something like that.
- A highscore system to keep people hooked :trophy:

Anyways, a fun and well-executed game!

Very interesting little game. Simple, fun and enjoyed playing it. Only thing i found was that the holes left behind cam above the ground sometimes which broke the immersion a bit but did not take away from the enjoyment of the game. Nice work!

Nice work. Cute graphics with an unique idea for the game mechanics. Didn't understand why the game ended at first. But just kept playing and buying upgrades from my diamonds. At upgrade Level 50 you can enjoy the sky for quite some time. So maybe some clouds or birds would be nice for entertainment :-D

Great game! I really enjoyed the pace of it, graphics are well made and the music fits great. Balancing the purchases and keeping some extra points may be a bit hard at times, and I think the deeper you go, the harder it will get to get back up and still keep decent amount of points. But really enjoyable entry.

Keep jammin'!

Nice game! Once I figured out you needed to buy the up-arrows quickly, I stopped dying! Main complaint is that the ending could be higher up (at one point I stopped buying more powerups as I wanted less airtime), which meant I stockpiled over 200 gems which I did not spend except for the occasional health refill. Cool entry though!

Solid gameplay. The graphics and the music are very nice :V: After certain depth it starts to get repetetive as it takes long time to get to the interesting part and even that is rather short.

Wow, very creative idea, haven't seen anything like that before! It works really well and can be expanded further by introducing some new power ups and blocks. Really great art, love the trees and diamonds. The character is unexpectedly minimalistic but still adorable. Overall, the game is really well-done and complete.

I only had one thing bugging me. The balance was a bit off and the game was too easy. Diamonds were piling up and I had to just wait for the red line to fall further. Maybe it would make sense to separate score from the currency? Also, if you buy too many bounce upgrades you bounce way too high. What I though would be cool was to have some pickups and obstacles also going on in the clouds. So it would be not just a drill but a drill with an umbrella hat or something like that

Anyway, really great job for a solo game! Impressive!
