Glowstick Run by karlipoppins

[raw]
made by karlipoppins for Ludum Dare 48 (COMPO)

This is a small cave runner where you have to race down as fast as possible as a glowstick. Finishing the race will set a local replay shadow that you can race against. (keeps the best time across all attempts)

A/D or Arrow keys to turn

  • Finish under 3 minutes for a gold trophee!
  • Finish under 6 minutes for a silver trophee!
  • Finish under 12 minutes for a bronze trophee!

Post your score below! My best run was 2:30, can you beat it?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4k7S9w16uo

Tools used:

  • sfxr for sound effects
  • garage band + V25 for music
  • godot/gdscript for code/engine
  • aseprite for art

All done from scratch for LD48. Hope you have fun!

Super fun game! Took a while to get used to the bouncing but after some restarts that glowstick really got some acrobatic angles. Almost got gold, so close! Excellent work

This was a really fun game! It was difficult, but it didn't feel irritating. I think this game would work well for speedrunning, well done!

It took a few seconds to get accustomed to the controls, but once I had it, it was really fun! You added an unexpected twist to a used-up genre, brilliant work! this could be a blast on mobile

Grrr! Infuriating, frustrating, range inducing, maddening game! And yet, I kept going until I finished. lol I'm no good with physics game and I kept saying "Okay, I've had enough! I'm done" but then I would be able to barely squeeze by which made me go "Woot! I did it! Okay, maybe a little more" only to bonk and go all the way back "No, no, no! Why!!!! :'(" :P I have a love/hate relationship with this game so if you were going for that, congrats! :D Oh, and that music is nice too :)

I liked the music and the ghost runner (I was hoping it would show all of the previous runs, not just the best lol). Great idea and great execution, the glow effect was awesome with the shadows from the platforms. I'm way too dumb for the last two sections where you have to ascend vertically, spent 5 minutes per run on those last two checkpoints. Awesome job! PS: (HTML Version hangs on load)

4:59 :)) Man it's satisfying when you string a bunch of bounces together (that actually put you in the right direction...) haha - really fun mechanic. I especially enjoyed the music too. Awesome submission!

@sacredbacon thanks for the heads up on the HTML version. Are you using a specific browser? I tried with FF and Chrome w/o issues. Thanks for trying out the windows version and going all the way to the end several times! :)

@haztro thanks so much for playing until the end! hopefully the frustration of the game is balanced with some of those satisfying moments of getting the right jumps :)

Unique game with a very cool base mechanic! Achieved 3:51 in my best run.

Cool also, that you see your previous run (cooler would have been to see ALL previous runs, but for LD it is impressive!)

I enjoyed playing it very much!

Wow, this was a tough one. I had a lot of fun with it. The mechanic is interesting, though I couldn't quite figure out exactly where I'd bounce off to. Surprisingly I managed to complete it... in 7:04. It still counts!

I also had trouble with the HTML5 version on Firefox not loading. Had to switch to Chrome.

Nice work!

What a fun game! It's really hard, I kept going back the way I came. If the theme was 'higher and higher', I would have set a record! After over 10 minutes, I gave up since I think I was nowhere near the end. I had a lot of fun though, the music is really nice and I like the bounce system!

What a clever idea and well polished! I really liked the music. It had a Jean-Michel Jarre feel to it. Well done!

@godknows @arancutter glad you liked it, thanks for playing it!

@last-angle I think I should have put less going-up obstacles to fit with the theme, thanks for trying it out!

@cogcomp I love JMJ, Oxygene FTW! thanks so much for playing it! :)

@lone-wolf thanks for the heads up, I don't know why firefox is having issues, that's unfortunate... Hopefully you were able to play the game still

@karlipoppins Yeah, I put it off for later because my internet is too slow to download a new browser, but it turns out I'm really good at forgetting about the existence of Microsoft Edge, works fine on that.

You'll have my review sometime tomorrow. I'm going to try to post my review with a gold score if I can. I love games like this :P

Great game!

I messed up quite a bit for this run but I think I still managed to beat your score. Got intense towards the end
![WOOO.png](///raw/ffb/42/z/41b1c.png)

(Yes I had made it to gold already but I got greedy :stuck_out_tongue:)

I can't think of any feedback that isn't covered by 'Great Game' other than two bug reports:
* The ghost recorder records resets (So you'll see yourself practicing before you got the run that broke your record before the current)
* The ghost doesn't reset when you reset

Actually I guess I could say that the ghost was a surprising and nice touch

@lone-wolf wow I can't believe you got gold and beat my score, that's awesome!! :)
Thanks for the feedback on the bugs, I'll most likely fix them after the scoring period has ended since they're not too game-breaking. Thanks so much for playing all the way through and getting gold, you're amazing! :P

Web version wasn't working for me on FF - the dev console contains this:

> Uncaught (in promise) ReferenceError: SharedArrayBuffer is not defined

> Godot https://v6p9d9t4.ssl.hwcdn.net/html/3712623/index.js:9

> doInit https://v6p9d9t4.ssl.hwcdn.net/html/3712623/index.js:604

(Full list with warnings and so on)

I had a bug I couldn't reproduce locally on mine, so I know how frustrating it is - hopefully that helps track it down!

Played the download version instead - wasn't what I was expecting! Very unique, I found it quite hard to get the hang of, but it felt really satisfying once I did. The lighting looks really good as well, and the music fits really well - great entry, really enjoyed this

Good job on your game! The physics were unpredictable sometimes, which was kind of frustrating. But I managed to make it through!

![time2.png](///raw/cdb/31/z/4220a.png)

It reminds me of this game -> https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/pogofall

Which gave the player the ability to rocket boost, it was a fun ability and helped reduce some of those moments where you wanted to go somewhere, but didn't have a way to start the movement.

Still a good experience! Good job!
