The Legend of Water

Explore the depths of the ocean floor, venturing deeper and deeper into the unknown, collecting magical gems to power your weapon!

Controls:

WASD: Move Mouse Left Click: Shoot! Tab: Toggle Gem Switching menu

Objective:

Venture as deep as you can without dying!

Killing enemies will have a chance of dropping rare magical gems that unlock new powers

Ran out of time a bit on this one, if you make it down 5 floors you've probably seen everything!!

Unity2021-04-2702-22-58.jpg Be careful of the strange creatures in the deeps!

Unity2021-04-2702-22-52.jpg Drag & Drop different gems into your weapon to change its effects!

27/04/2021:

Updated the builds to fix a few minor bugs - white box no longer overlaps part of the screen in WebGL & fixed some cases where the game wouldn't start in both builds

If you want to play the original submission build, change ld48 in the url to ld48orig, but these are virtually identical in terms of gameplay!

Notes:

WebGL version might freeze up your browser briefly while it loads

*Performance is much better on the windows version, so if you have perf issues with the webgl build, the windows one is recommended! *

Great game! Love the graphics, but it would be great if you can make the shotting sfx a bit louder, it's almost inaudible in this game.

Well, there is a true concept here. Controls are great, difficulty is fair. I had tons of gems the three first level then nothing. I was a bit sad about it but still able to kick some butt. It's a cool game and i'm sure dev still got some idea to improve it.

Great game! Awesome that you were able to implement the inventory system within such short time. HTML version has a bit of lag when controlling the main character. The whole game reminds me of Link's Awakening on Nintendo Switch. lol

I love this entry, it looks and plays really nice! The art is super cute and looks very good. Animation is almost always a no-go during a gamejam and putting your characters on board-game like plates is smart and looks very nice.
The balance seems good, it might be more difficult if you go to deeper levels. The levels did not go down in the UI, I got stuck at 400 meters.
I would have liked to see the camera turned downward, I only got hit while enemies jump from off screen.
And lastly the gem mechanic from your main weapon is a very cool idea and the reason why I stuck around to experiment, always love to see that. I would have loved to see that expanded more and have a more genrous offering of thos gems, in my 2nd run I never got anything but green gems.
Good luck on your future projects!

Very nice! All around this is very competent! Some suggestion: when moving down sight is severely limited because of the camera angle. The cursor is a bit hard to see so its hard to aim, a contrastive custom cursor would be good. I'd like a way to gain more life, i'd like for the fun to continue!

Some positives too! I love the visuals and the sound is competent. music is a bit simple but un-intrusive. The gem system works well and i can see a lot of rogue like-y potential in this game.

This gave me Etriyan Odyssey/ Mystery Dungeon vibes. :stuck_out_tongue:

On a more serious note, this is really nice! The music is pretty soothing even though you are being surrounded by deadly octopi. The weapon system is neat, although I don't really know the difference between the green gem and the rock shots? Is the rock stronger?

I ended up finding myself just spamming shots since there isn't any ammmo count, but the game itself is still pretty hard. I died as soon as I touched the stairs leading to the last floor haha.

Im impressed with the maps, did you design them yourself? I thought the maps were auto genrated at first, but this was a lot of work to make for 5 levels haha. Good job!

My only other thought is that sometimes the bounce shots go "out of bounds" meaning they travel up towards the camera sometimes, but it didn't affect the gameplay as a whole.

Thank you everyone so far for the wonderful feedback! :hugging:

@kaabiikaze
The levels are prodedurally generated! There's preset data for what enemies / gems should show up on each level & the rough size & complexity of the level, but the layouts of the levels are generated at runtime :)

The only reason there's only 5 is we ran out of time to make stuff to put on them! It should keep generqating new layouts if you go past that, but you won't actually find anything new :(

Game very good! The art style, in addition to being coherent with the game, really enchanted me! The music is very relaxing, which matches the atmosphere of the game.

But there comes a point when there are no new things to pick up, and it gets kind of repetitive. Maybe it is something to be considered for an update? Anyway, the game is very good! Congrats!

Well presented dungeon crawler type game. Graphics were very good and the shooting mechanics have the scope to be made more interesting with additional gems to find.

Nice game. The idea of upgrading mechanics is great, you need to expand it. It would be great to have some health pick-ups in the later levels. Other than that, it's a cool game and I enjoyed playing it.

A nice game overall - I was almost sad to kill the enemies since they look kinda cute :D

Very nice graphics, sometimes it got hard to actually fend of all the monsters at once when I tried to outrun them - but maybe my strategy was a bit off :D

The core gameplay is really well done. This was a fun game. This reminds me of the underwater sections in Pokemon ruby/saphire on GBA.

A few nitpicks:

- There were clustering of AIs in corners.
- I was unable to know how to open the inventory
- I cannot seem to go beyond 400m in depth
- The chance of spawining a collectible is very low it seems beyond the first few spawns.
- Sometimes on spawning to a new level, AI would be very close by - causing almost instantaneous health loss.
