Burning light by GFM

[raw]
made by GFM for LD36 (COMPO)
=== DISCLAIMER =======================================

This game is broken beyond repair. This build is what I was able to savage from that horrible mess. (but this may be me, the developer, looking at the game could be but isn't... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

=== ABOUT ============================================

On a distant land, an explorer found a set of mystical lenses. Any ray of light that passes through it gets perfectly focused into a single direction, sometimes seemingly defying physics. Also, any ray that passes through it becomes able to light flammable materials.

On that same land, the explorer found some small shrines that resembles torches and perhaps could be lit...

== CONTROLS ==========================================

There are 3 suggested control schemes, but they are active at the same time.

Gamepad scheme (using XBox 360 terms):

move around: Left stick/D-pad
Cycle through the available lens' angles: shoulder buttons
Jump: A
Hold lens: B
Put away lens: B
Put lens into holder: B
Take lens from holder: B

Keyboard (I):

move around: A/D
Cycle through the available lens' angles: Q/E
Jump: W/space
Hold lens: Left ctrl
Put away lens: Left ctrl
Put lens into holder: Left ctrl
Take lens from holder: Left ctrl

Keyboard (II):

move around: left/right arrow keys
Cycle through the available lens' angles: X/B
Jump: up arrow
Hold lens: C
Put away lens: C
Put lens into holder: C
Take lens from holder: C

There's a single action button that is context sensitive. (that's why the same button is repeated over and over)

** Gamepad usage is highly recommended **

[EDIT 2016/08/30]
=== TOOLS/TECH =======================================

* Language: C
* Libs:
- SDL 2.0.3 (input, window and audio handling)
- libGFraMe 2.1.0 (framework, handles time step, loading assets, rendering pipelight - i.e., sort sprites when needed and render'em through OpenGL/SDL2 -, remappable inputs etc)
- libCSynth 1.2.0 (synthesizes audio from a text file; wasn't used D:)
* Tools:
- VIM
- GIMP
- Tiled
- Chronolapse

I definitely love the idea of this game. The physics can glitch a bit, but it's nothing gameplay-wrecking. E.g. when you try to jump on the platform on the right and hit it at the right angle, you clip straight on to it. I definitely like the graphics. So, if you had fun developing, develop further and hopefully you can get a real release

Sorry to hear you had trouble this time around! The terrain art is pretty cool, and it looks like you had a good idea here. It's a shame you couldn't pull a full game together from it. Better luck next time!

I dont really understand how it works ...
You should add tips or a tutorial.
Also graphics are nice.

I assume your game is more than I see so great job :)

Not too sure if there are more levels than the first as it says game over when I complete it. Though I do love the idea of game play and it is very interesting mechanics wise. Sounds would be good and I also love the graphics.

Really cute! Maybe you should make a finished version for a mini LD or something.

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

Nice game, beautiful art, interesting concept.

Sorry for the trouble, I had the same here, my game is still less playable than yours. But c'est la vie.

Anyway, it's nice to see Brazilians around here. I found you from the Will's World Map. I'm from São Carlos. Cheers.

I think you have an interesting and solid concept in hands. Don't give it up, it can yield a good game.

I like the idea and the artwork is awesome. Too bad it didn't turn out as expected. But on the bright side, the glitching physics makes it a bit more of a challenge.

I really like the screenshots, but the game wouldn't play on my PC for some reason. No errors, it just won't run.

Love the art style and all. Seem you had some problems, hope you learned a lot. The game is obviously not done, but the idea is really great. Good work!

I'm sorry that you weren't able to complete it, but from the looks of this game it probably would have been awesome. The art was really good, and the subtle movement of the islands in the background is really cool. The concept is nice too. The idea of going around and reflecting light seems really fun.

This is a nice start for a puzzle game. I could at first not figure out what to do, then I read your description because I thought I was missing a key. But I did not, I simply did not know what to do. Some kind of tutorial or in-game introduction would have been nice.

The graphics are really nice, good job on that :)

Pretty fun i will say that.
i did encounter a bug or it could have been me but the character was going right even when i wasn't pressing the button. Luckily it only happened once.
Other than that love the game and graphics wish there were sounds and if there were i couldn't here them.

Wow! How did I get so many comments, already? o___o
Thanks a lot, guys! I'll try to play and comment back your games. :)

The unfinished state of the game is mostly my own fault, for trying to "properly" (i.e., in a mathematically correct way) fix a bug for over 6 hours... But I did have tons of fun and finished something, which makes me pretty happy.

@pi_pi3 Actually, that is a real "feature". If I hadn't forced the player to clip through the platform, they could get stuck at the corner (this bug is common to all of my games). Letting go of stick, moving it to the other direction or jump would free the player, but I wanted to test this ugly and hacky solution... :P

@Elit3dGaming Wait, you were able to figure out how the game works from that brief description? I'm really impressed! Unfortunately, that is all there is to the game... =/

@WERT Studio (@kai20), @NEETsoftLD Which OS are you running? Is there "game.log" file on %APPDATA%\com.gfmgamecorner\Burning Light\? Is there any error messages if running from a command prompt?

Really liked the mechanics and art =) You should definetly fix the bugs and make a full game out of this =)

The art is good and the gameplay has real potential. Asside from a few glitches that lets you jump to the higher platforms it feels natural to play. Keep working on it :)

Feels like this could have been a great game if you completed it. A bit hard to judge too when you don't know whats working as supposed to or not. Nice work tho, learning is what LD is about!
